46MPG!?!
09/14/05 at 11:26:44

I never bothered to check before, but I have been trending my mileage lately.  Apparently, I'm only getting 46MPG.  I thought the Savage would do a lot better than that.  I bought the 2001 model with 2900 miles on it and apparently a carb re-jet.  The exhaust or intake appear to be stock so I assume the rejet was to stop the back fire.

I'm about to hit 8000 miles and want to get my hands dirty again.  I think I'll replace the plug.  What else should I check to increase the MPG?

Mine drops down into the upper 40's with a lot of stop'n'go or speeds in excess of 70 MPH.

A more open intake and exhaust should help.  I'm getting 52mpg, and I run it pretty hard.  Mostly 50 - 55 mph, with some highway riding at higher speeds.

If you want fantastic mileage find a nice level 2-lane and cruise a steady 40-55 mph.    Cruise 65-75 mph will drop your mileage.  Every stop/accelerate maneuver drops the mileage.  Deduct if the acceleration is WOT.  City streets are the worst.  I'm doing everything wrong and I still get over 40 mpg.
(Got 58 mpg on my 140 mile twisty ride. which included 30 mile 65mph+ freeway to La Canada and 30 miles of city streets back from La Canada.)[

Put in a new Iridium plug, new air filter, and check carb adjustment to make sure it is correct.  Try that and see if it is better.
If you are still not satisfied then check the muffler for carbon build-up...clean and/or drill out for better flow.  If you want a lot more flow then go for another muffler.
Also, what is the weight of the oil you are using?  Are you keeping it changed and clean?
If your engine has run too hot there may be some slight damage that has increased friction, and therefore robbed you of power and increased fuel comsumption..

My commute is such that I hit the city streets and then the interstate.  About the worst combination you would want for gas mileage.  I get 47-49.  I never bothered to check it after some longer cruises on state highways but as mentioned it is reported to get much better mileage at those kind of speeds.

On a couple of rare occasions I have gotten milage in the +70mpg range (almost as good as my old '85 Rebel which regularly gave 70 - 80mpg!!) ... usually along rural coastal highways, light traffic, little shifting, no stop/go with speeds in the 50 - 70kph range.
Normally my milage runs in the 50-55mpg area with mostly in-town Riding. I remember during break-in a couple of years ago getting figures in the low 30's!!

Thanks.  I'll try a new Iridium plug, new air filter, change the oil, and check carb adjustment.  I'll update you guys on the results.

I ride either stop and go residential or 75mph+.  Sounds like I'm getting what I should.

Picked up my 05 S40 (used) with 724 miles on it last Friday.  Filled up at once.  Trip home (75 Mi.)  at 55-65 mph, some country riding and filled up again.  57.999 mpg. On this tank, have gone 120 miles and have not hit reserve yet.  I plan to run it dry on the main fuel supply and then go to reserve.  Need to get a feel for how far I can go before it is "get off and walk time".

I've posted this before, but to repeat I'm averaging just over 51 mpg. I've been keeping track of my gas consumption from the beginning so this is over several thousand miles of mixed mileage.

I get a consistent 49 mpg on city driving and not pushing it too hard.  Tomorrow I'm going on a 150 mile trip, all on two lane hiway with speed limits about 55 mph.  I'm looking forward to seeing what mileage I get.

On My bone stock "01", I have averaged 60 MPG over the last 2 months.
Actually quite pleased with that.

One little detail that everyone forgets with respect to mileage figures, and it is always relative to the Savage...."Depending on Driving Habits."

The published numbers from Suzuki are a guideline and may not apply to your particular riding style.  If your bike is running okay and you aren't belching out clouds of black smoke or leaking puddles, then don't worry about it.....

Now, you can get your hands dirty doing something else  8)

Oh yeah, even with my jetting and pipe changes, I average 55 MPG, but that's because I tend to shift up at about 2500 RPMS in city traffic.  Just enough to stay ahead of the cages.

I have averaged 48-52 since day one.  From stock to current mod's it has remained constant.  The most difference is made by driving style, easy cruise=52, hard runs=48...combo style lands it in between.
