An interesting Weekend
09/05/05 at 20:36:18

Well i've had a crazy weekend. At about lunch time on saturday the owner of my store asked me if i wanted to go assist with the hurricaine evacues. At first i thought they were setting me up for a going away party. Came to find out it was true. Let me just tell you. The conditions in the Austin Convention Center are great compared then what it could be but wow it really sucks it is so terrible. You have cot next to cot next to air mattress. people who dont know anybody no organization. My duty was to setup 40 computers, network them and get up online so that they could have somewhere to try to communicate with family look for family look for jobs or just surf  the web. So if JBIRD is allright hopefully he will get online and give us a shout.  They had two i would guess 80 " projection tvs The facitly was Air Condition and they had showers and food maybee not the best but they had but it was still shocking. Its like a milatry camp just no sand and heat thank god. well in the process of setting up those systems it just so happens that their check in process was completly unorganized. the oracle database that was supposed to work wasn't running. So they had 20 systems checking people in with a individual excel spreadsheet on each machine. no way of tracking people no central backup nothing. to make a long story short i took charge of that project they got the database running and hopefully thanks to the efforts of my team and me over 2000 people will have better chances of finding each other or their families finding them. as i was leaving at midnight there was more busess just pouring in. to add to already prolly 4000 people there. its just so shocking and sad to see all these people who have lost everything WOW i'm still in awe. I still dont agree with the actions and complaining a few days back but i cant feeling bad and i must say it was terrible.

To add i also removed my rear tire last night that was a fun project was so easy. i didn't realize how easy it was and those rear brakes look like they will be a snap.

Mike, It is good feeling to know that the knowledge you have has helped bring order to some of the chaos.
Are you changing jobs? I noticed you mentioned a going away party?

Gotta go put on a hat now, so I can tip it to you.

I'm wondering how many people have already found loved ones because of you.  Smiley

to awnser gazab thats part of the disorganization. no one knows whats next. I guess the first step was for them to know an exact count of how many people the had and who all was there. Once they can access that data and get people to their families i'm sure they will work from there.  Part of the data bieng collected were questions like Section 8 medicare wic foodstamps were you working before are you going to be looking for work. I think the plan is to help them get the aid they need and help them find jobs. i had such a small part in the ordeal i really dont know. I know the original project was to setup systems so that they could browse the net, look for jobs, find family.

To awnser Radar yeah i am chaning jobs i start my new job on the 19th when i get back from VEGAS BABY!!! :-D Friday is my last day with these guys. They are great and i love them but they are small so pay isn't the best and no benefits. but the new job fixes all that :-D

Enjoy your vacation and good luck with your next endeavor!

It may be silly, but I feel really proud when I read about people on this forum helping out.  Thanks for doing what you did.  You made a little (who knows - maybe big) ripple in history.
