Trouble Again!
09/04/05 at 09:47:43

Bike as been running ok for last couple of weeks until yeaterday...rode to work, 7 miles, and all ok.
On the way home it started backfiring more than normal, only little farts though.
This morning went for a run and still the same.
Rested by a river for about an hour and when I restarted it wouldn't even tick-over correctly...ended up pushing it about 4 miles home.
When I finally stopped sulking decided to have a look.
Plug was black and sooted but not wet.
NO new plug so cleaned it up.
Tried again but still wouldn't tick over.
Took plug out again and it was black and sooted, not wet, again.
Tested for spark...there was a spark but not where it should be..dancing all over....so obviously plug shot.
Could it be that it is set up so lean that it is eating away at the plug until finaly it gives up...
I also checked fuel system and it appears ok.

i had the same problem yesterday,i took it for a ride, then when i came to a stop,it started to die,i had to rev hard to keep it running, but when i got on my street it died.tryed to start it but it would fire then shut off ,so today i took the carb off and took it apart, cleaned everything with carb cleaner, there was some dirt in it .
it seems to be running as usual, ill have to see if still runs good tomorow,i think there was some water in the gas too.the fuel float was out of spec too!

I'm not an expert, but I thought that if the plug was black it meant that the engine is running rich and greyish white color means that it is lean.

update..
I'm running almost the same set up as gazab  (130 main, stock air filter, free flowing muffler) and i just checked my plug and it was black and sooted too.  Haven't had any starting problems yet, but recently my bike seems to be backfireing more the usual too.  I'm gonna try maybe a 135 main...?

That is my understanding also.
But I was thinking that if the plug was breaking down and not sparking correctly could it present the same symptoms...and eventualy flood.

It seems to me, that You are having a pretty rich condition. First make sure The carb is not flooding. The main jet makes a diff if You are riding 3/4 to fulll trottle. The way You sound, You are "riding more on the needle"- around 1/2 trottle. In this case- You might have to lean slightly this area- drop the needle slightly down.

With the stock 130 main, repositioned clip, and fuel mixture screw turned out, is it possible that the lower end is too rich making the plug black and the higher end is too lean causing the backfire?

If you raise the clip on the needle to the top slot, it will lower the needle making your midrange leaner.

HI GAZAB44   --just a thought from left field__

try checking electrics-- ignitor, reg/rectifier--

sometimes a weak/eratic spark means foul up

sounds like fuel(sorry petrol) is ok  ??? ???

Electrics:
Check the little wire from the negative of the battery.
There's a connector about 10 inches away from it. Disconnect - clean - reconnect.
Solved a lot of intermittend ignition problems in the past.

Well, if it does give up, and I'm not sure if that will happen from a lean condition, it can end up looking rich as the gas gets sprayed on there.  I think.  Tongue

Is the plug gapped correctly?

Also, backfiring is a rich condition...

I don't know whether you can see from this photo but does this look like the slide has been rubbing..it does to me...this could cause it to stick...
if so, what should i use to clean it?
Should it be shiney or black?
