White spacer removal/clymer manual
08/07/05 at 06:40:34

Could someone please tell me how to remove the white spacer from the carb on an 05 savage/boulevard? I need to know step by step. Never done a carb before. Detail pictures would be great. I saw them in here referring to an exhaust system. It worked great did my first exhaust job the other day. Also can I get a clymer manual at a local store chain here in town? Anybody know where I could get one without having to order and wait for it?

Thanks for your help you savages!

The late-model updates aren't out yet from Clymer or Haynes.

The spacer mod should be photo documented in the Tech corner. As long as the S40 still runs a BS40 Mikuni, the directions for the older (96-2004) still apply.

I am also interested in this mod.  BUT, when looking for the documentation I cannot find it.  I can only find posts referring to documents with the directions to doing this.  Same goes for the main jet mod.  Anyone know where these documents are?

thanks,

Well, to my knowledge there's no Suzuki document outlining how to modify the bike in this manner.  However, I did a quick search and found quite a few threads outlining what needs to be done; one of which is called white spacer and jetting.

Don't remove the spacer. Either file it to 1.2-1.3 mm  /1/2 of the original/ thickness either replace it with small washers that add to the 1.2-1.3 mm thickness.  Otherwise Yoou will end up with extremely rich condition off idle.

Does this mod need to be done on an 87? I know those carbs weren't tuned as restricitive as the newer (emmission) ones.
Thanks

There are a couple of threads in the past few weeks regarding this one and I believe the answer is no for the '86 and '87 models.

as an alternate to shavingt he white spaver, you can use a couple of 3mm washers. I used 2.

Improving the airflow by upgrading the air filter and exhaust will definitely be useful.  So far as the main jet goes, you may not need to do anything.  According to the Carb Specs in the Technical Corner, you should have a 155 main stock.  I would think that'll be pretty good for most uses.

Just some more thoughts to add:

Adding a K&N and doing exhaust mods requires retuning of at LEAST the idle mixture, needle setting (for mid range), along with the main jet (top end).

I found the 2 #4 washer idea a little scary because the washers seemed to bind a little in the slide bore (which wouldn't be a good thing).  I just shaved my white spacer to the same thickness as those 2 washers and WOW, WHAT A RIDE !!!

At 500' above sea level in MD, I am running a K&N and 2 1/4" baffle holes.  My mixture screw is out to two (2.5 in winter), my spacer is as explained above, and my main jet is 152.5.

I sanded mine down 50 percent using fine grit sandpaper. I used a micrometer to measure but it could be done with a finely graduated ruler. It need not be exact. And you're right rkutzner...WHAT A RIDE ! My bike hauls @ss.

I agree on the idle mixture for sure but I don't believe the main jet needs to be changed and the white spacer might not need to be modified either.  The carb on the early models is really different and is already pretty close to what we're altering ours to be.
