Ignition improvements or enhancements
08/03/05 at 01:05:24

I have not seen any information on improving or enhancing the ignition system (for a hotter/bigger spark)on a Savage, such as different coils, plug wire, plug wire terminator, type of plug wire etc etc.
Any ideas?? ???
Thanks
Ike

I don't think there is much else to be done to the Savage/S40 ignition. If you hang a fatter coil on it you may fry the ignition module. I suppose a new plugand/or wire might be installed.
I think the spark is decent since the thing is so lean already, otherwise a MSD might be installed somehow.

MSD motorcycle ignitions:  http://www.msdpowersports.com/2004_m_ignitions.html

Crane motorcycle ignitions:  http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=5&prt=2084

Since the spark triggers off the crank, the Savage is a dual-fire, like a stock Harley.  The plug fires on every revolution of the cylinder, on compression and exhaust alike  (at least that's my understanding of dual fire, 2 spark events per 4-stroke cycle).

You only have one coil output on the savage, 2 on the HD.  Stock HD is one coil, 2 outputs.

The "wasted spark" setup Greg has talked about -common on bikes and cars.
That MC-3 should do the trick.
Back in the day of Accel points and a hot coil installed on a mech.-fuel injected B.B. Chevy. Plugs were changed each weekend. Then MSD can along and they lasted months or all season. MSD cranked instantly, improved throttle response, looked and idled better. It would be "Savage" overkill w/o more compression, cam and/or head work but the multispark function would be good on even a lower reving stocker. That is how I could justify it.
