Need to do a clutch replacement (Read 24 times)

I think that Lancer is a distributor for Barnett but if not you can get them from Dennis Kirk.

Gotchas? 3 of them...

1. If you don't have the special tool, be careful about how you loosen/tighten the large nut. It is tricky but doable.

2. Make very sure to use a torque wrench to tighten the clutch springs. They can easily be over torqued.

3. make very sure that you install the 1 "special" friction plate next to the large spring washer.

The rest is a matter of patience Tongue

-tempered steel metal plates: 5 @ $5............$25

-spring kit: $11...............................................$11

Total ...............................................................$102

Add about $15 for shp

I can't seem to find them anywhere. Dennis Kirk has a kit, but it's only the friction plates. If i should replace the steel plates, anyone know where i can get them? Thanks!

Replacing the steel plates is not realy required if the're not bend or blued.

The special tool holds the clutchbasket while you undo the clutch central nut.

Alternative:

1)Remove the 4 nuts from the springs

2)Remove the inner clutch basket

3)Install the springs, a couple of washers to take-up the space of the basket and install the 4 nuts again.

4)Insert a copper washer ( penny) between the primairy drive gear and the clutch gear.

5)Remove the clutch nut.

Every 4 speed Savage that I owned and one of the 5 speed Savages had a bad clutch. I used only friction plates in the repair. You don't nees steel plates unless they are heavily discolorated and warped. I always put a little more preload on the clutch springs, using a thick washer. The downside is that the clutch becomes harder, but this doesn't realy bother me.
And one old trick that makes the clutch work better- pull out the clutch basket and smoothen the groves ,made by the plates on the aluminum basket.
This helps the pack of plates to separate fully when You sqeeze the clutch.
