Noise from engine
07/16/05 at 09:10:35

Hi everyone,
I just took out My Savage for its first long ride, and I noticed a bit of clattering (knocking?) in the engine.
Just wondering if this is normal, as this is my first big single.
I hear this mostly when there is not much load on the engine, Cruising and Idleing.
I did a oil change before riding with 20-40 yamalube.
Otherwise bike runs out fantastic.
This is an "01" with 900 miles.
Thanx in advance.

Does it sound like it comes from the top near the exhaust valves?  A little bit of tappet noise?

Your bike is just new and not even broken in.  Don't worry about a little clatter.  Big air cooled singles need looser tolerances than liquid cooled multis, too.  Have you had your initial service yet?

On the other hand, maybe your bike is upset with you for using Yamalube, too.  You might need to make it up by giving it a good cleaning and wax job  8)

Yes it does sound like it comes from front of top end.
Also seems to coincide with exhaus pop.
this is a stock bike, pretty quiet, so You hear everything.
I assumed the bikehad already gone for intial service.
I can find out.
Yamalube was all I could find in the proper viscocity range. :'(
Thanx Greg

Do you know who owned the bike originally?  Or the dealership?  Not saying that it might not need some attention, but chances are that it doesn't at such a young age.

Anyway, just kidding.  When I first tried sythetic in my Savage, I used a Kawasaki brand because it was available....but then I experienced clutch slip, which was my bike's way of paying me back  Grin

I dont know the original owner. I bought it from the second owner. He caimed it to have only 200 miles from the original owner.
Bike came from Boston Honda (Suzuki dealer).
Ive got an e-mail to the previous owner, asking if he did the initial service or not.
I,m gonna buy My bike a new tool bag tomorrow, so maybe that will appease Her. Cheesy
