New Starter design

Help!  My starter is on the blink.  It sounds terrible.  I have yet to remove the left side crankcase cover (alternator cover) but I will.  The starter stalls and sounds like the starter clutch is not engaging and then slipping etc.  It makes really loud banging sounds.

I see that Suzuki changed the design in model year 1996 to include a "torque limiter" in place of the gear 2.  I wonder if I may install the new torque limiter into my 1987 crankcase?  If you have any leads on this please respond.  Thanks.

Here's where you are going...and with all that noise, I wouldn't run the engine until you do.

Good luck.

Well I got the generator cover off.  The big gear on the crank is missing teeth.  Gear one next to the big one is worn like it hasn't been looking correctly at the big gear and worst of all the socket on the crankcase that supports the shaft upon which gear one rides is busted.

How can I get that socket fixed?  any suggestions appreciated.

My friend...you got a mess.  But then you know that....

Actually, I think there is someone in here with a old Savage motor.

Any idea how this happened?

You have to make sure that you have all loose metal parts out of the motor too.
