Savage " least likely to be stolen"

This is an article I found on the Motorcycle Cruiser website:

"This bike, the single-cylinder Suzuki 650 Savage cruiser (the 2004 model is shown), now called the Boulevard S40, was the motorcycle least likely to be stolen and is very rarely crashed, according to a study of claims by insurer Progressive."

I wonder what their "evidence" is that sport bikes are ridden more often and further than cruisers? Since I've been looking around, I'd say that 80-90% of the bikes I see on the road are either cruisers or touring bikes. 10% or less are sport bikes (especially during the week).

Glad to know that no one is looking to steal my bike. Roll Eyes

i never worried about my gn400 (the savages older brother) being stolen. it was very complicated to start. now the savage, with the appearance mods i've made i do worry about it.  the crash thing doesn't apply to me, i've crashed every machine i've owned, heck i've been down twice since i bought thumper 10 months ago.

i guess growing up (well i've never really grown up) around the race track, i'm familiar with crashing on a regular basis, and have no problem getting back up dusting my self off, repairing the machine and getting wild and crazy again.

i do carry heavy medical coverage on my insurance rider as thats where all the big bills will happen in the event of a major spill. i've been pretty lucky so far with just some minor broken bones, yeah like a broken bone is minor, and a few cases of road rash. generally i wear leathers whenever i ride so that does help quite a bit.

i think the reality of the low occurance of theft is a result of the thieves not knowing what the machine is, so they don't know the real value of it. many people think it's a small cc engine because of the single. that's good i believe.

I agree about seeing more cruisers than sportsbikes.  But I also don't travel the major highways around the area, where the sportsbikes hang out doing their stuff.  More often, though, the cruisers I see are parked outside their favorite watering hole.

If it weren't for sluggo, the Savage might have made it to #2 or even #1 on the least crashed list.   Tongue  It's still a good enough track record to keep my rates at a reasonable level. (and I can tout them to people that question the sanity of my desire to ride).

Here's a little more info... copy and paste from ISRA site:

June 20, 2005

The Suzuki GSX-R Series motorcycle is the most likely motorcycle to be stolen and to be involved in a crash according to a recent study of claims data on more than two million motorcycles insured over the past three years.

The study, conducted by The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies, the country's largest motorcycle insurer, also revealed that the least likely motorcycle to be stolen is Suzuki Savage, while the least likely to be crashed is the Yamaha Virago Series.

So what does this mean for bikers?

If you choose a motorcycle that's involved in more crashes or is stolen more often you'll most likely pay more for insurance.

"Insurance rates are based on a lot of information about you and your driving record as well as the make and model bike you ride," said Rick Stern, motorcycle product manager, Progressive. "If you buy a bike that's stolen often, you may pay more for comprehensive coverage, and if you buy a bike that is involved in more crashes then you may pay more for collision. We want bikers to be aware of what drives rates so they can make better, more informed insurance decisions."
