Hi, I could use savage advice.

Im a 23 year old married male in Long Beach, CA and I have been looking for a savage for the past couple weeks. There are usually few on the market, and when they are for sale, they get snatched up quickly. I have never piloted a bike before, and I just recently got my permit. I always liked the savage and have wanted one as a first bike.
There are a couple bikes for sale locally and I am going to look at them this weekend. Do you guys think this looks like an ok bike?

I am also going to look at a low mileage '95 that is around the block from me., they are asking $1800, but i get the feeling they would take less.

about 3000.
Let me add that, while I haven't worked on a bike before, I am pretty mechanically inclined. I have rebuilt several car engines before as well as built my '79 camaro into a 12 second car from scratch, so I am pretty sure I could do some wrenching on a savage if I learn.

I'd offer $1600 on the '95 with 3k tomorrow morning! - as long as it's running, looks good and all - they are fairly easy to work on - just not very complex.

Neighbor!  I'm in Gardena.  Congratulations on the homicidal wife (obvious since she's allowing you to ride the Streets of Los Angeles.)

Either bike is a bargain, assuming nothing major wrong.  If you want a rat there's an '86 or '87 in Gilroy that can be had for $700  (which needs a peg and tires at a minimum.)

Either one would be fine. 87 is 4 spd, 95 and up is 5 spd. Only major difference.

Joel:

I looked at the cycletrader picture in the enlarged view. My first thought was Memphis shades windshield.willie and max bags,,,rear carrier....RIGHT ON!..

Then I noticed the engine. That thing looks like it is blowing out some serious oil. More so than the infamous plug leak. The bottom half of the engine looks covered, along with the front of the battery case, drive pulley guard, belt guard, alt cover, and the front of the saddle bag.

Buyer beware.

Personally I wouldn't touch that bike with a 10 foot pole.

Go with the 95 if looks ok

cheers

I'd go with the '95 also.  Maybe you can get him down to the $1200 price of the '87.  As WD said, the '95 is a 5 speed too.
