Part Compatability

How do I figure out if a part from an "86 will fit my '04 without seeing it?  Specifically I want to know if the seat pan has changed on the pillion seat.

I need an extra seat pan for a project I'm working on.  It looks like I could get an "86 pillion seat cheap but I don't know if it will fit.  Any ideas on how to figure it out or does anyone know?

Ron Ayers micro-fiche part numbers?  But my guess is that if the seat cover changes then so does the part number even if the pan is the same.

I have a feeling that the seat mounts are the same for all years....go for it.

Doesn't the '04 have a one-piece seat (driver/passenger)?  And the 'new for 04' seat bolts down at the back of the passenger part?

If so, then it seems different than the other years of Savage.  The pillon (passenger) seat bolted on the front and had two hard plastic tabs that slide under a metal tab (like this but this is upside down  |_|  )

8)The '05 Boulevard S40 has the 1-piece seat, the '04 LS650 has the same 2-piece arrangement as it's predecessors and should take the seats from '86 on up thru '04 no problem.

Checked Ron Ayers and the picture of the mount looks the same across the years so I think it will fit.  I hadn't really poked around Ron Ayers before...thanks for the idea.  It was easy to use.

BikeBandit also has some pretty good exploded views with part numbers.  I've used them to order parts before and I'd bet they'd work for comparing between model years for compatibility too.

I've used BikeBandit to look at different setups on both my Savage and my Maxim but I think the picture quality on Ron Ayers is better.

Well I bought the seat on ebay for $4.99.  What a deal.  I should have it in a few days.  Based on the illustrations on Ron Ayers I am pretty sure the seat pan will match.  I'll let you know.

Yep.  It came in yesterday and I checked it -- it fits!  Its in bad shape as a seat (ripped, worn) but I don't care all I wanted was the seat pan.
