Did you ever figure it out?  Was the brake rubbing?  What was making the heat?

He probably gave up and traded the bike for an Eton.

sorry guys i was out of town for awile. but  i do have good news i think. i have found that the damage to the belt is comming from the front pully. i have a 88 savage and i think that somewhere i lost some parts to the cover that goes over  the pully. if one of you would be so kind as to take a pic of there front pully with the inside of the case and any peces that come with it. right now i can run the bike with the case off but the beld wants to walk out off the pully about 1 1/2 inch or a third of the belt. anyways sorry for leaving you guys hanging.. Embarrassed

Confused here....how does the belt walk off the front pulley?  There is barely room between the transmission case and the pulley anyway.  What about the lip on the edge of the front pulley?

Oh yeah...I don't really have any good pics of the pieces in the belt cover mounting, but it might be good to check the Ron Ayers site for a fiche of the bushing, spacers and bolts.

i have no lip on my front pully i think that might be the problem because i think the belt is walking off and rubbing the case and that is creating the heat. so you say the front pully should have a lip on the outside like the back pully. so really all i should need to do is get a new pully. i think i will go  and order a new pully today and see if that fixes the prob. thanks greg by the way like the colors on your bike really like the black on the forks. i will get a pic of my savage up today and hopefully a pic of the pully i have.

This is a really new one!  Yes, it has a lip on it....

How did someone (previous owner) manage to remove, loose, or change the front pulley....and why?  Is it a smaller pulley?  Cause, I don't think that a bigger one would fit.  He certainly didn't do you any favors....

Thanks about my bike, btw.

thanks so mutch for the pic. not sure if the lip broke off or it is a diff pulley. and no he did not do me any favors on this bike at all. i orderd a pulley from bike bandit ($80-us). with a little luck that will fix my belt problem. thanks for the help.
