At 4000 miles:

Replace oil and filter

Clean the air filter

Inspect/adjust valve clearance

Inspect/adjust de-compression cable clearance

Adjust idle 1000 and 1200 rpm

Retorque cylinder head nuts and exhaust pipe bolts and muffler connections

Retorque chassis bolts and nuts

Inspect/adjust tire pressures

Visually inspect the bike overall

Every 4,000 miles!  Grin

Quote:
From Clymer's manual:
Before each ride
Inspect tires and rims and check inflation
Check steering for smooth operation with no  excessive play or restrictions
Check brake operation and for fluid leakage on front disc brake.
Check fuel supply - Clymer states "make sure there is enough fuel for the intended ride" - you should make sure there is enough for more than the intended ride.
     Check for fuel leakage
Check all lights for proper operation
     Check engine oil level
     Check for smooth throttle operation
     Check gearshift lever operation
     Check clutch operation
Inspect drive belt for wear or damage
Check drive belt tension - adjust if needed

Every 2,000 miles/3,000 Km/6 months
     Clean air filter
Check and adjust automatic decompression cable free play
Inspect drive belt - adjust tension if needed

Every 4,000 miles/6,000 Km/12 months
     Tighten exhaust pipe nuts
Inspect and adjust valve clearance if needed
     Check and adjust idle speed
     Clean and inspect spark plug
     Replace engine oil and filter
Check and adjust clutch operation and free play
Inspect front brake hose for leakage
Check brake fluid level in the brake master sylinder
Inspect fuel line for damage or leakage
Inspect evaporation emission lines for damage or leakage (California models)
     Check all brake system components
Inspect the brake pads and shoes for wear
Check and tighten the front axle and clamp bolt
Check and tighten the rear axle nut
     Lubricate control cables
Inspect drive and driven pulleys for wear and mounting tightness

Every 7500 miles/12,000 Km/24 months
     Replace spark plug
     Replace air filter element
     Inspect steering head bearings
Check all suspension components for wear or damage

Every 2 years     Drain and replace hydraulic brake fluid

Every 4 years    Replace the brake hose
                        Replace the fuel lines
Replace evaporative emissions lines (CA models)

And then they add this note:  This Suzuki factory maintenance schedule should be considered as a guide to general maintenance and lubrication intervals.  Harder than normal use and exposure to mud, water, sand, high humidity, etc. (or if used for racing) will naturally dictate more frequent attention to most maintenance items.

Per the Suzuki shop manual, the service intervals are:

600 miles
4000
7500
11000
15000
etc.

What is most important is the oil/filter change (I always do this myself every 1500 miles). Valves usually stay tight for a long time and can be ignored unless noisy. The de-compression cable can be ignored unless the bike cranks hard during starting. All the other stuff, from my 40 years of motorcycle experience, just keeps cash flowing at the dealer. Bikes are built tight at the factory and will usually stay that way until somebody tampers with them. It takes a lot of miles for things like clutches and brakes to wear. Stuff like checking fuel or brake hoses for leakage is anal. If the gas line leaks, you'll see or smell gas, and it isn't going to fail just sitting in the wind--usually somebody has messed with it. If the brake hose ruptures and leaks, the front brake will go away and you'll know it needs attention. If you've been riding through thorny hedges, or parked the bike in front of a burning house, examine the brake hose. Let common sense be your guide.

to check the valve clearances i have to take the engine completely apart don't i?
(i don't have my clymer's manual here at work)

the inspection of hoses and cable connectors i do at least weekly(my bike was neglected and sat outside for at least one year before i got it, lots of rust)

Seat and tank off.
Small oval caps on top of the engine off.
Valve/timing inspection cover off.

The worst part is doing the intake (rear) valves, there just isn't enough room for fingers.

Don't freak out.  It isn't that bad.  As Jon stated, use those maintenance intervals for oil and filter and simply check things like pressures and levels regularly.  Most engine related things don't need work unless you notice a change in the way it runs or see a leak.

An easy thing to do is just take a rainy Saturday, grab some wrenches, and just sit next to your bike with your manual.  Look at things like bolts and cables and see if they need to be tightened.  After a while maintenance just becomes second nature.  And it can be fun, too.
