London is right, they are separate systems, one aids the other.
I don't even think about 'how' anymore, it's ALL pure instinct ALL the time; mostly I front brake, sometimes w/clutch (for control) and very rarely use rear, I kinda think of my rear brake as an emergency-aid brake.

* also watch for oil, paint, gravel & wet metal lids on road when using front brake and when coming to a stop DON"T DRAG YOUR FEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
