How do you break?

How do you break?

When coming to a stop for example, do you step on the break while at the same time squeezing the front break [still in gear] then press in the clutch to down shift or find neutral.

OR

Do you press in the clutch to dis engage the gears first, then apply the breaks?

OR

Do you engage the breaks while simultaneously pressing in the clutch...

ALWAYS ALWAYS break when u want to come to a stop! Operating the gears and clutch u do at the same time,,,, think of them as seperate systems. i dont mean to be rude, but how long have you been riding? or have you just upgraded from a scoot?

Gregski,

If I am coming to a planned/anticipated stop, I usually downshift thru the gears until 1st or 2nd gear and then disengage the clutch and use the front disk brake to draw to a stop.

If I am stopping in an unanticipated or emrgency stop, I'll just pop the clutch and use the front and rear brakes in about a 70/30 ratio with the main effort being concentrated on the front brake.

If you are unsure of your braking abilities, or the bike's braking abilities, you ought to take it over to a empty parking lot or empty street and practice on it until you learn what the bike can and can't do for you.

It may save your life someday, by knowing how to brake hard and keep it up and straight.

Hang in there, and happy trails.

Chris F;

The intent of this post was to do a survey on how people come to a stop.  I don't know how you got the idea that I don't know how to ride...

It was just my experience that if you ask half a dozen riders about walking you through the stopping process on a bike, they will give you six different answers, well I just think that NOT all six can be correct.

Before a turn usually light braking on front and rear no shifting or a downshift if on the edge of needing it. At a stop clutch in downshift and rear brake first then front to fully stop.  Rear brake on the savage is alot weaker than on other bikes could deffinately use improvement.  Other bikes I can skid out the rear tire like when riding those old reverse is brake pedal bikes.  The savage the rear brake does almost nothing and front is more like 90% rather than 70% as on other vehicles.  Would love a rear disc on future s40 models.

London is right, they are separate systems, one aids the other.

I don't even think about 'how' anymore, it's ALL pure instinct ALL
the time; mostly I front brake, sometimes w/clutch (for control)
and very rarely use rear,  I kinda think of my rear brake as an
emergency-aid brake.

Hope this helps.

* also watch for oil, paint, gravel & wet metal lids on road when using
front brake and when coming to a stop DON"T DRAG YOUR FEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...and G, don't think, just listen, you can learn A LOT from everyone here, trust me.

When I break, Coffee and a donut.  but sometimes a nap.

And I try not to break down, as it usually entails a walk.

But when I brake, I use everything available to me to stop.

James,
If you can't lock up the rear wheel on your bike then there is something wrong with it.  I wouldn't call the rear brake weak.
