For my bike I used a cyclecomputer as they call it.
It's the kind that has a speed capability of 300 km/h ( which you don't need b.t.w.) from Sigma .
The meter is placed on the handlebar and the pick-up I attached with epoxy glue to the stationairy part of the brake caliper.
I found a strong magnet in the shape of a washer that is stuck to the brakedisk and secured with a dab of epoxyglue. Mail me for some pictures as I don't know how to place them in the message.

I got a blue grease pencil and write my mileage on the windshield. I have my EZPass in a little pouch with velcro that wraps around the risers. I stuck velcro on the pencil and I stick it in the EZPass velcro, so it is always available.

At fillup, I erase with my finger and put the new miles. Cost $1.29. It's priceless!! very quirky looking, now people ask me what are those numbers....

Sadly, the lack of a proper trip meter is one of the most common peeves of Savage owners ... you'd think by now that those 'Zuki engineers would've adressed this one!

There is a difference between the bikes speedometer probably due to the rear tire being 140/90 i.s.o. 140/80. And also you don't have to look down so much to read your speed.

Better bicycle trip meters can be adjusted to the mm. You need to consider, however, that centrifugal force on a motorcyle tire increases it's diameter as you speed up.

I suspect that if you wanted to be that hinky about it however, you could mount it, drive a KNOWN distance and make adjustments, and be pretty accurate.

I looked into them, but decided to wait. Here's one that I thought was exceptional looking and cost effective:
