Well, I guess I have been broken in. I took my first spill today. Made the classic newbie blunder and gave her too much throttle and couldn't hold the turn. Boy am I embarrassed.

The biggest problem is that now I broke the left foot peg and need someone experienced to look her over. She is ridable but the closest dealer is way to far away for me to ride to at this stage of the game. How do you find a motorcycle mechanic that can come to your house? Where is the best place to order a new foot peg? If the shock is scratched up and looks a little (very little) off kilter, will I have to replace it or can it be straigntened out?

Someone give me some advice and make me feel better about hitting the asphalt and scraping up my new baby! Embarrassed

Check ebay for a replacement foot peg or take it off and try fixing it (take a hammer to it to straighten it). If it isn't real bad, don't worry about it.

As far as the shock, nothing can be done - it isn't repairable since they make them so you can not take them apart - you would have to get a new one (or a used one - again, check ebay). They are expensive. If it still works, then don't worry to much about it.

The most important thing is that you learned something without getting hurt.

I did wonder.... you stated "closest dealer is way too far away to ride at this stage in the game" - how did you get the bike home when you bought it?

I bought it used and the previous owner delivered it for me.

I realized that I have an instinct to grab when something happens, and when I gave her too much throttle I grabbed that throttle again. I am going to have to practice letting that go. It is counter-intuitive for me to squeeze the brake but let off the handle.

I actually broke that foot peg. I looked online and it seems as if they are not hard to find or put on. Are they all standard sizes? Does the Savage need a particular one or can I just order a plain old footpeg?

Glad you're still in one piece, but did you get insurance on it yet?
Don't feel bad about spilling it. My first bike was a Suzuki GS250T, 1981 model. I spilled it 2 days after I got it. The front brake was in bad shape and it was 100+ degrees, that leads to a brake that applies itself without warning. Front brakes and gravel don't mix well. Ya know....I took it to three different mechanics, and it still kept doing that. Sold it for $350.

I don't believe you can put any foot peg on the Savage although I've read messages on another board that states you can - I believed it and I have a set for a Harley that I decorate my garage with. They MIGHT work as a replacement for the passenger set but more than just the foot peg would be needed, the mount would also need to be changed.

The set I got was Highway Hawk 733-312 - fit perfect for driver pegs - the passenger set were a little too long -- would not allow folding them up - also I don't see the passenger pegs listed in this list - I thought they were (and if you look up 733-312 on bikercom.com, they show a picture of a different bike's pegs instead of Savage peg but the sytle is the same just not the mounting portion.

You just have to watch what you are ordering as the pics don't always match but they do send the correct ordered part. Shipping is a bit high, but after I wasted money buying two sets of Harley pegs, they were cheap in comparison.

There is also a www.highwayhawkusa.com - I've never ordered from them but they might be faster in getting the parts.

First advice on turning, look where you want the bike to go, don't stare at a telephone pole or you will hit it, as you are in turn 1 look beyond it, for example look to turn 2 and the bike will get you there, look where you want to go.

Second advice, break before entering the turn, do NOT break while you are in the turn (that's too late)... as applying the break tends to stand the bike up, and majority of the time you need to lean the bike as you turn.

Third advice, accelerate out of a turn, gently roll on the throttle, imagine the turn spitting you out, like a centrifuge. The throttle is your friend, this will sound crazy and takes some time to believe, but when in trouble, as in going down, if you apply throttle that will keep the bike up... objects that are in motion tend to stay in motion, or some sh!t like that.

If you are leaning, tilt your noggin' so it's vertical. That way your sense of balance will remain non-confused. I read that in a motorcyling magazine long ago, and it's always served me well. At least it did when I rode a sportier style bike in another century.
