What year Savage and how much oil?  There is an known problem of oil leaking due to a problem with "rubber plug" - many dealerships will 'take' you and say you need to replace your head gasket.  The latest Savage (I think the 2003) has it fixed with a new part.

I found where it was leaking from. from one of the headbolts  for some reason it was not tightened down.
