Savage Rebuild

I bought my 2001 Savage in July of this year.  I am the third owner.  The engine leaks oil form somewhere between the middle and the top of the jug.  I plan on taking it down to the leak and replacing the gaskets.  Should I go ahead replace anything else while i am in there?  ???  I guess I am asking if there is any preventative maintenance I should consider doing?  I appreciate any help.  First time biker...but I love to ride.

Not so fast with the full teardown! You're more than likely experiencing the infamous oil plug leak. All you may have to do is remove the head cover, locate and remove the rubber plug, coat it with Yamabond 4(get it
at a Yamaha dealer) and reinsert the plug reassemble engine

Well ... I'll help on the topic.
I coated it with permatex gasket maker and got it sealing up well.
On another motor I put the solid plug that was on the newer savages and that plug wanted to always jump out of there ... however sitting it in there with the gasket maker and quickly putting the rocker box on and bolting it tight makes me feel warm and fuzzy about it being secure in there and tight too. That plug has a weid tapered shoulder ... totally works ...
Cool.
