Title: Done ! Final !
Post by zipidachimp on 06/29/23 at 23:00:57

After 9 years and numerous configurations, I have settled on a 'style' for my S40 that I wish Suzuki had done from the start !
Here:

The key is to span the dip in the frame:

A seat from Ebay on a second seat pan is then bolted in place.

If I can scrabble together $500, I'll get buchanon's to build me an 18" rear wheel,
or maybe just smooth out some of the rough edges on this one. Speedhut has speedos/tachs on sale right now.

Suzuki could still do this and join Triumph/Royal Enfield/Honda in bringing back 'standard' bikes.
Cheers!  8-)
ps: sorry for the links, but my photo uploading skills are non-existent  >:(

Gorgeous! I think what would really finish it off would be to move the foot pegs back closer to the swing arm pivot point. I'm still trying to get used to the foot forward set up on my Bobber set up. All my previous bikes had more rear set pegs.

I might have done that except my knees are 79 years old and I'm pretty used to the forward position.
Also, the seat supports could have been welded in place, but bolts are cheaper than a welder!
Still needs some smoothing out of rough edges, but I have all summer!
Cheers!  8-)

You’ve been hiding it , Zipi ! I’m in that same 8-9 years range and I’m calling mine done , well they are never really done. A sweet build ! Nothing left to do but RIDE. Even if I have no time to ride , I’ll still fire it off and buzz the hood ! Congratulations

Thanks all. the stance is the result of the following: rear shocks are 12.5". front is lowered 35mm using a DC MOTIVE top tree and sliding up the fork tubes, 18" front wheel.  Understeer is gone ! Handlebars are Amazon Sportsters, 26" wide, really nice!
It's really a ten-foot bike that I'll smooth out this summer.
Cheers!  8-)

Did you check the clearance between the lower triple clamp and the lower fork legs?

I lowered the forks on my bike by 25mm and I think there was less than 5mm clearance.  That's with the stock top clamp that lengthens the forks slightly.   Your top clamp is different so you could be fine but you should really check if you didn't.

Hi: I'm aware of the problem. I have zip ties on each leg to keep my eye on the clearance. With the DC Motive clamp. I keep all of the stock dive allowance, and don't have to mess with the tubes.
I'm amazed how much better the bike feels in corners. The 18" wheel is a winner !  On one of my rides, there is a right turn with a 200 degree hook. The 19" wheel wanted to put me into oncoming traffic, the 18" wheel stays where I put it.
Cheers!  8-)

Since such modifications could lead to catastrophic failure, a better and safer idea would be to pull the top caps and make sure the forks bottom out before the lowers make contact with the triple clamp.  Fifteen minutes might save a life.

I'm of the opinion that it's the bike builder's responsibility to make sure the motorcycle is still safe for anyone who might ride it or be on it.  It would be nicer if DC MOTIVE took the time to test the product and supply the end user with the maximum amount of adjustment that still maintains clearance.

RYCA's original travel reducing method was safe.  It reduced travel while maintaining stock clearances.  Raising the forks in the triple clamp (or shorting the tubes as I did) maintains full travel while reducing stock clearances.  You retain the forks full travel but the stakes are higher with this method.

The zip tie method is great for telling you how much travel you have used not the best way to test how much clearance you'll have when it bottoms out.

Another method would be to lift the front end of the bike and measure the exposed fork tube with the folks fully extended.  Since the stock forks are claimed to have X travel you should be safe if you have more than X, but confirming the actual result of the modification would be best.

Zipi ties on the forks and a quick launch off the R/R tracks (get it airborne , of course)  very accurate measurement. A little safer doing a stoppie , well kinda. Thanks for the BIG brake , Shawn !  ;D

Zipi , What is the seat height ? Thanks

Rutt: 31.5" +/-
Welding the supports in place can save you a lot of headaches, trust me. The frame horns are a major pain, but I needed to save the M8 bolt holes.
I'll try and post some pics of how I did mine. It includes the use of a band saw(ha!)
Cheers!  8-)
