Title: Reliability Rally - $1,000 motorcycle
Post by Dave on 06/08/23 at 12:14:11

Deals Gap (and several others venues) have a 2 day event this year that requires you to spend not more than $1,000 on your entered motorcycle.

It is a bit tough to do that anymore.......that amount of money doesn't get you much of a motorcycle these days.  I have been able to buy a few bikes for that kind of money 5 or 6 years ago - but those were a bit of being in the right place at the right time.  My little Ninja was purchased for $250 with a blown motor...it took a $400 used motor and some tires and a few parts to get it going and I had just about a grand into it when it was running again.  I bought a Savage that I thought was a parts bike for $500 that didn't have a title - I was able to find the previous owners and they filed for a lost title, it needed a cam and rockers and tires to get it road worthy.....once again it was less than a grand.  Similarly I got a 1980 Honda CB125 cheap and got it running well....although it wasn't all that powerful.

If I look on Craigslist there just isn't much available for less than $2,500.  I guess if I want to enter that event....I better start watching for the next bargain bike!

Big fun Dave , San Francisco used to have a similar race , no more than $500 total I’m sure it’s a $1000 by now and must complete a 200 mile rally type race bbq & a band afterwards. They actually did a sweeper lap with flatbed truck case you don’t make it so you don’t miss the party !

I paid $800 for Mad Hammish.   All it needed was a battery.

No problem with "reliability".   Sitting around 66k miles.. I think.

Do it SD (short for Super Dave) , do it on your $1000 Savage. I’ll swear I sold it to you. Maybe a busted up Chinese Grom clone for under 1k . I’m always lookin for a cheap bike to fix & ride/race , a day you will never forget or regret

Paint it white & a red SD on the tank , pay homage to a late , great , American Hero ! 8-)

I don't have a suitable project bike at the moment........looks like I need to start looking!

The 250 Ninja and the CB125 both fit the bill perfectly - but I sold them a year or two after I got them running.  I had right at $1,000 in the Ninja and it was dead reliable....I rode it 1,400 miles when I rode down and spent a night with MMRanch in Lynchburg, then rode down to Auburn, Alabama and spent a night with Stewmills, then rode to the Barber Vintage Motorcycle days, then rode back home to KY.  The Honda CB125 was a bit more limited in speed and distance - it never went more than 20 miles from home on the backroads.

I will need to research the type of riding that is required in the Reliability Rally - I don't want a bike that cannot comfortably travel the routes they ride on for 2 days.....I need something that can keep up with the group.

Any bike that can endure a two day event , second day may be painful. A gel seat cushion if needed. Just ride !

Here you Dave!
I think it just needs some air in the rear tire.
LOL.   ;D https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/274943171553030/?ref=category_feed&referral_code=undefined&referral_story_type=listing&tracking=%7B%22qid%22%3A%22-3990760393903524514%22%2C%22mf_story_key%22%3A%226332665830129203%22%2C%22commerce_rank_obj%22%3A%22%7B%5C%22target_id%5C%22%3A6332665830129203%2C%5C%22target_type%5C%22%3A0%2C%5C%22primary_position%5C%22%3A2%2C%5C%22ranking_signature%5C%22%3A4146462930520506368%2C%5C%22commerce_channel%5C%22%3A504%2C%5C%22value%5C%22%3A0.0019033285297588%2C%5C%22candidate_retrieval_source_map%5C%22%3A%7B%5C%226332665830129203%5C%22%3A111%7D%7D%22%2C%22ftmd_400706%22%3A%22111112l%22%7D

Thumperpaul:

That bike doesn't have a title....that is a deal killer for me.

I would likely spend more money and time trying to get a title than I would fixing the bike!

No title , no deal !

Smart boy !

It’ll take all the fun out of the build.

I just went through a 6-month title "journey", so I can relate.  It's a shame our state gummits are so utterly obsessed with titles for old rattletraps that nobody would waste time stealing.  It must be something to do with taxes or fees  [smiley=rolleyes.gif] [smiley=evil.gif]

It’s all about the tax.
