Title: Best way to jack up a savage w/o a motorcycle jack
Post by Anameofsomesort on 05/15/23 at 22:49:41

I need to get new tires on my savage, but really don't want to spend an extra $120 to have the shop take my wheels off. I also really need to remove and replace the old brake boot. furthermore, I need to take my forks off to replace the seals. I don't have a motorcycle jack, and it's a little out of my price and space range at the moment. I do have a normal car jack and some old 2x4s. I plan on cutting the wood to the width of the frame and use my car jack with a piece of wood in the middle to start jacking it up, and then stack wood toward the front and near what looks like a flat bar towards the back of the frame. that way it should have 3 points of support and allow me to remove the wheels and forks without having to worry about it falling over on me.

Is this a good idea? have any of you used a better method than I plan on using? I hope I'm not gonna damage my bike with the method I've described above.

afraid of cracking an aluminum casting, I place an old cushion between the bike and a piece of plywood on top of the jack. Still need to side stabilize !
cheers!  8-)

There are several ways and you can even find one in the tech section index.
1. look for build your own bike stand.
2. poor man's bike stand

and I've always found that a pair of jack stands under the front foot peg mounts very stable way of lifting the front end.

Strap the handlebars down with a couple hooks in a piece of wood against a wall stud, then put your favorite jack under the engine.

You can fab something up pretty quick and cheap.
I made a poor man's bike lift/stand and had both wheels off. Put a couple eye bolts on it and use tie down straps.

A hoist and a rafter works. I used a cinder block and a wedge of wood to stop the wobble.
You CAN  GET it on a cinder block without a hoist. You gotta lean it over and use the side stand to get the right side of the frame up and get someone to slide it under. From there it's a rasslin match. A piece of plywood is recommended.
But if you do that you need to secure it so it's stable. I used the hoist.

Two lifting straps and my cherry picker engine hoist. Broke all the big bolts loose on the ground , picked up the whole bike. Had my donor bike stripped to the frame and forks, swingarm in record time. I’ve seen some really nice lifts and tables made from wood on utube. One was a wooden table with storage below for tanks, fenders , seat keeping painted items out of harms way.

if you got a hoist, put the hook in the end of the square bar and lift... it's perfectly balanced.
