Title: Well, that doesn't look good!
Post by zipidachimp on 02/11/23 at 00:07:41

Bought a bottle of Redline ZDDP a couple of years ago to add to my Rotella. Picked it off the shelf this week and there is a mass of pink sludge on the bottom of the bottle. Mixed it up and it doesn't look good. Probably not a good idea to use it ? (1 oz per gal.)
cheers!  8-)

Redline does that.....when I was using mine I could only get 1 or 2 oil changes before the pink sludge formed.  Heating the bottle in a water filled pan and shaking would get it mixed up long enough to use it one more time - but the sludge would form again.

The Redline fad has passed....it is no longer recommended as a way to get more ZDDP.

The best way to lubricate your bike is just buy a proper oil to begin with, and leave the additives to the guys at the factory.

I’ll have to go look at mine , I would guess it the heavier elements settling. I find it odd people only complaint about in cold weather , you would think that heavier elements would settle faster when it’s warm. Maybe it’s not a heavier element , I’ve  seen similar sludge in lubricants that have Teflon. I’ll mess with mine chill it warm it  and see what happen. Better guess it’s just been sitting on the shelf for hella long time and spring is near and some are doing their every other year oil change , huh , admit it !

Obviously right, if leakage is there then you must avoid it.

Mine is dark red , cap is tight , on a shelf not on floor . Just the slightest pinkish haze only on the very bottom. Coldest here is maybe 30ish but it does get hot enough to fry eggs. Everything gets a spoonful , just a bit.
