Title: What metal to use for cam tensioner mod?
Post by Ikarus on 01/09/23 at 14:41:12

hello everyone. It’s time for me to do the tensioner mod. The tensioner actually almost fell out but I fought it in time. Going to make the bracket but not sure what kind of metal I’m supposed to use. Is it any kind of steel will do? Thanks.

Do you have tools?  Welder, hacksaw, grinder.....drill?

I don’t have a welder but I have everything else. Planning on making the bracket and then having someone else weld it. That’s why I just need to know what metal to use.

Some version of steel.  We used just plain steel plate, and also made one from a handle of a crescent wrench.  Both have held up for more than 5 years now.

304L does very well, but any mild steel will do.

By the time you source the material, spend your time and pay to have it welded, you might be better off just buying one from varslegen1.

Another option is the Drag Bike Mike jack bolt.  No welding is required.  Just drilling and tapping...and tearing down your top end (I think).

While I am fond of my jack bolt, it is waaaay harder to do than the Verslagy.  Verslagen's tensioner is a sweet deal.  I did the jack bolt because I wanted the versatility to shorten the cylinder or mill the head.  Very few will need that versatility.  The Verslagen CCT is inexpensive, solves the failure problem, and captivates the plunger for an added measure of security.  It's the way to go.

What's the mileage on your bike that the tension is almost falling out?
