Title: Just how hip are you ?
Post by Ruttly on 12/10/22 at 10:16:08

It seems I may be developing a bad hip and I am freakin out about a hip replacement surgery. Even worse the thought of never riding again , yup now I’m totally freakin out. I hoping other members here have had the surgery done and still ride.  Surgery doesn’t bother me , it’s the outcome. Healing time and physical restrictions are eating at my brain.  Need some real life advice. Thanks for any thoughts.

A lot of riders get a large displacement scooter after such surgeries. The 300cc Vespa has a completely flat floor - its as easy as getting in your car.
-More affordable maxi scooters like the Kymco have a floor that is not completely flat, but it is far easier to mount than a conventional motorcycle. Top of the hill is probably the Suzuki Burgman 650. The 650 is no longer in production but there are good used ones around. The industry has you covered.

Maybe it would be good to get it looked at. Find out what is going on. There are supplements that can help. If you drink Cokes, figure out what is in them. It's been so long since I got educated by my doctor I don't remember what the ingredient was, it was an acid,I'm pretty sure, but it kicks calcium out and fluoride looks enough like calcium that the bones will glom onto it.
It's phosphoric acid.

consumption of Coca-Cola affect bone density?
In addition to displacing healthier beverages, colas contain caffeine and phosphoric acid (H3PO4), which may adversely affect bone. Objective: We hypothesized that consumption of cola is associated with lower BMD.

My doctor, since retired, talked to all of us. The audience was not going anywhere for a while. We were all taking IV treatments that took more than an hour.

https://www.steadyhealth.com/topics/coca-cola-bad-for-bones

If it's got phosphoric acid in it, it's Not good for the bones. The link addresses hip joints specifically. That
He fell and broke his hip
line is not something I'm believing. I'm figuring the ball on the femur snaps off and gravity takes over.
Yeah, I'm aware that A weak joint can be broken in a fall.

My wife had a hip joint replaced; there were restrictions on movement following surgery for some weeks but after that there were no restrictions.
The incision was from the backside of the hip.
Her sister has had both hips replaced but with her the incision was made from the front side and she had no restrictions on movement.
Cutting from the backside requires cutting into a muscle and that requires the restrictions until healed, while cutting from the front side apparently does not cut a muscle and so no restrictions.

Point is, as long as the healing goes well there should be no reason you would need to stop riding.

I know a couple of people who have had their hips done.  One just a few months ago.  They were both on their feet that same day.

Yep, as soon as the patient is awake from surgery and capable of standing they are gotten up and started walking…with help of course.

In order, Bender Thanks for your kind thoughts , maybe a little insulted. Clearly I’m a true die hard and I may be moving away from kick starters to a happy button , but so far away from being a scooter person. I can sell them all but not my tracker , I’ll stop riding when they pull my cold dead fingers from the GRIPS ! Already thinking of ways to make it easier to get on it if it comes to that.
JOG, it’s been giving me painful clues for awhile now , but will be seeking a professional opinion tomorrow. I drink less then a twelve pack of soda in a year and no energy drinks. Both shoulders bone on bone , early , but surprisingly knees old but ok. Sometimes talking to you is a bit scary, thanks for not fueling the flames.of fear.
Lancer, Thanks for the upbeat info , courage is building and fear is going by the wayside at least till the Dr. starts talking. I know it’s a very common procedure, think I just hate going under the knife , makes my mind run wild.
Moto , Just what I needed more success stories the more the better !
As soon as I know anything I’ll keep ya informed.
Thanks again to Savage Support Group , it’s great to be here !

After 6 weeks of P/T and multiple x rays they are finally gonna give my hip a MRI today. At first they called it a hip sprain  now they think it’s a hip labrum tear. I walk ok but don’t trust it say on a ladder.

My oldest brother had hip replacement surgery the first week of November.  He is finally back on his bicycle as of a week ago.  He is very happy with the outcome.  His main advice - do ALL of the PT no matter how uncomfortable it is.  Very important for the long term mobility to prevent any scar tissue from building up and limiting the motion.

Find out here real soon. Either way I won’t be riding for awhile. Spring is a ways off. Cool moist air on an early spring morning , perfect for test and tune. Testing of gps speedo too. When it feels right a few speed runs. Can’t wait to get some numbers.

Rutty,
I am having hip resursfacing done this Monday. They say recovery is a little longer than replacement. I am thiinking 2 months off the bike, and bicycle too. I have a pin in my leg from the 70's that would come out too hard to do a replacement. I'll keep you posted about my progress.

Title: Re: Just how hip are you ?
Post by Ruttly on 01/27/23 at 09:51:15

Wish you luck & short healing time , keep me posted. I knew someone else would be going thru it. So far it’s a tear somewhere , most heal without surgery unless it’s severe. I’m sure others are watching too.

Title: Re: Just how hip are you ?
Post by badwolf on 02/01/23 at 07:11:52

Hip surgery went well Monday(I guess, I woke up afterwards). They kept me overnight to make sure my plumbing still works, it does YEA! No real pain, just sore on that side. I am getting around with a walker for now and have limited movement with that leg. 50% weight on that leg and can't cross my legs for now or bring my knee up more than 90 degrees. It will be 2 or three weeks before I can drive a standard shift. At least 2 months off the bike to be able to roll it around and keep it upright. I could ride in a month if I had a 3 wheeler.
Gives me plenty of time to catch up on my reloading and casting. And the squirrels in the back yard are going to catch hell from my pelletgun!

Good news , plenty of time to ride , just get healed first , don’t rush the riding , vitamin C help you heal quicker , keep me posted on your recovery.
Thank You

MM , Lancer said a mouthful eat good , keep moving don’t have to run miles I prefer to walk and enjoy the world just stay busy. I won’t be swinging a leg over anything for awhile so I’m walking. Gettin good sleep about 6 or 7 hours does me fine. But I sure would love to ride my mountain bike instead of walking. Dog walking is great , they pee and run to the next pee spot so this gets heart rate up don’t start walking till heart rate comes down to normal then go , heart rate up then rest then go again, total exercise for the ticker. And no gym membership needed.

Last night I had a dream that I was riding an unfamiliar "cruiser" style motorcycle on a curvy downhill mountain road....OK so far.

While I was trying to get used to the bike and how to corner with my feet on forward controls and my arms up in the air.....another motorcycle rider came right up on my back tire.......just off to the right side.  When I turned around to see who it was - the rider and motorcycle looked just like one of those shiny green plastic Army men we used to play with when we were kids.....except that instead of green the color was a dull orange.

It took a minute for me to realize - that it was Ruttly hot on my tail! ;D

One more thing that is more important the older you get. So important that injuries abound when you forget it. Pulled muscles , tear injuries , falls , your balance. It affects your body all over. Drink water , if you don’t like water , flavor it  and drink it anyways , stay hydrated all the time. Most think that during warmer weather , but it’s during cold months when I forget to drink water , warmer weather it’s easy to stay hydrated. When body is dehydrated bad things happen , you are weak and compromised, easier to injure yourself. So I like Gatorade or water at a arms reach especially during  winter.

Update- 1 week with the 2 wheeled walker, 9 days and I drove my stick shift p/u. 2 weeks with a cane and now just my 2 legs! I hobble some and basicly have to learn how to walk again.
My mom told me I was walking at 16 months, hope it is quicker this time.
I am aiming for April 1st to get back on Thumper.
Moral- Don't put off hip surgery, they are doing great things now.

I have slowly been digesting the idea of trading the Guzzi for a Super Meteor
Dave if the one in your dream was "Red and White" then how did it handle ?

They look good !

You did good it’s almost March.  LOL

How can I be the only one ?    I'd think everyone of us has  at least one bike we want to "Ride for a summer --- or two "  ;D

I'd rather have a single throttle body over the twin throttle bodies , so I might just keep the Guzzi with its single TB .   :-/
But
Throttle bodies are ... trouble free ... for the most part , I think ???
So , how can the RE twin be so much more fuel thrifty is beyond me .
The RE even weigh's more , they both have the same HP ,

How about you other fellers , where would you like to park you hips for a year or two ?

If your talking about new bikes the you'd have to get a Honda Trail 125 to even get a kick start .
Or
Some of the China bikes still have both also.

Its great that at least two different company's are making a mid-size classic machine for about $7k .      Both of them with "Happy Buttons" !   :)

Title: Re: Just how hip are you ?
Post by Ruttly on 02/23/23 at 10:18:06

Yup Dr said absolutely no kick starting motorcycles anymore. Told me to reward myself , get a bike with a happy button. So I tried to get him to write me a prescription for a new motorcycle, so I could show my loving wife. But he didn’t want to play along , something about liability. Boy , I could have walked into that argument full of confidence , with a prescription in hand !  ;D

I know I own a sportster but I’m not a twin guy. Me likem thumpers. So I’ll wait to see the BSA before I buy something else. Just like girls , can’t stop me from lookin!  :o

That is a sharp retro , loose that rear fender and from a distance it would be hard to tell new from old. I bet it does the dance just fine too. Probably way faster than an old H2 , just not as intimidating.

Thinking of fenders ... where's the front fender ?    ::)

That little thing - that's where the fender should be is not for keeping water spray of anything ???    Well ... maybe the bottom of the headlight ?  ;D

Besides  being a dry weather bike only ... it's a nice looking machine !  :)

There are a lot of those "Dry Weather" bikes being produced .

Met with Dr #2 yesterday and reviewed mri. He is a sports surgeon and has seen a lot , he said no surgery yet and there is no repairing it at my age. Dr #1 referred me to #3 who has referred me #4 a surgeon. Gettin back to results of mri , multiple tears of labrum , crushed  with cysts that fill with fluid when inflamed , multiple bone spurs , loss of cartilage and the list goes on and on. He wants to inject the joint with steroids. Says when pain gets too bad I’ll be gettin a double hip replacement surgery a few years down the road. He too said no more kick starting motorcycles. Keep on with P/T try to keep it healthy. Guess all my as$ kickins will be given with the other leg.

Post by badwolf on 02/25/23 at 17:03:35

Rutty, Man that makes my surgery sound simple! I am 4 days off the cane and still hobble, but I mowed the lawn yesterday! See my surgon in 4 days don't know if he will yell at me or praise me. I have sore muscles in my leg, but no more pain in my hips. All in all I am glad it's done.
Started Thumper today, first time in 4 weeks. Was all I could do not to try to climb on. Another 4 weeks and I am gonna RIDE AGAIN.

I know it’s a damm good tire , back in the day that’s the only brand you would find on any of my bikes. I’m just worried I’m gonna like them. It’s the stance that bothers me  , not so much the actual tire.

I've run the 404 on the Sportster 1200 I had and it didn't last but 7k on the rear , but my habits have changed since then.

I also ran them on a 4 cylinder 750 Kawasaki years ago ... they didn't last any time on that thing !   ;D

It would have been my first ride for this year. Tried to mount my mountain bike today no way so l didn’t even try the Sportster. So I stumbled on my BSA engine today. Had been cleaning my work bench off cause I can’t do anything it seems , so I now have a 70/71 B50 race engine on the bench now. Seems it used to shine  now it’s grayish and shows every tiny nicks and scratches and oozes with patina and a tiny , not enough to form a drop yet spec of oil on a sump stud. I believe things talk to me such as guitars and motorcycles , etc. Sittin and staring at this primitive power plant , it begins to whisper to me. She’s tellin me she has waited long enough , she not concerned with powder coating or paint or polished chrome. She simply wants to be ridden hard. It is a true vintage racer , she’s 52 years old. So I already have a mounting opposition to doing an essential only restoration. I made the short list to get her race ready;fork, seals, tires, grips, points, plug, oil lines. I have a new chain and I’m confident I have everything else. Ooh number plates , that can wait but needs to be on the list.
So what you think paint n polish or that good vintage patina down n dirty ?I’m so excited , it’s like a treasure hunt haven’t seen some of this stuff for 20+ yrs. Going out to the warehouse ; exhaust, tank, seat and any boxes marked BSA on the list.

Let me know what camp your in ; Ride It or Restore It

Jackpot of boxes still mia

Title: Re: Just how hip are you ?
Post by Ruttly on 03/03/23 at 13:06:52

It’s not a museum piece , it’s gonna better represent itself as what it is/was , a true vintage race bike. Paint is rough and cracking over the fiberglass. Just hints of rust, patina all over , now a new chain won’t work think I got some old nickel plated used chains for it.

The THREE "R's"
1.   Restore it enough
2.   Ride it , let it give
3.   Respect it .

Forks are drained , I’ll order the kit for forks , seals , wipers , wiper clamps and new Ceriani made in Italy stickers. Old stickers still intact will stay. I have allocated a tight $200 budget. Well maybe $250 , shipping sucks ! Trying my hardest not to change anything and anything replaced means I don’t have one and now have to seek out a vintage replacement or a suitable era correct part. I’ve never dun this kind of build before. It has its own set of problems to solve. Hopefully , my goal is old and there should only a few things new on it that you might notice. So far it’s tires and grips. I did order a set of points and a new plug too. Clean front wheel and replace tire , waitin on tubes. It’s the polar opposite project from the Tracker. When I clean out the garage , all the bikes are out in the driveway , never fails always a few stopping trying to poach my bikes with some pitiful offer. This bike will only draw more fools with no money !

Post by Ruttly on 03/04/23 at 11:05:32

Crazy as it may seem the engine is guiding me. All the decision making and ordering is done is it’s shadow on my work bench. My motivation is her puttin the guilt trip in my head for forgetting her for so long. She will be a beauty once again. She has interesting shapes & lines too , let’s see if I can get the stance just right. Can’t wait for that little spot of oil underneath.

Guess what that little 250 was a hill climbin sleeper , absolutely no one belleived it could do what it did. Slow like a bull dozer , it would chug by its fallen competitors to the top. The 250 I’m after I used to own , a Victer 250. And I want it back think I traded it one night drinking for that original 35mm Ceriani forks that now resides on the project. Forks almost worth as much as the bike.

Those tires are way beyond use. I’ll need a couple of 3 digit days of baking in the sun to even attempt install. I’m sure the sidewalls will crack open too what you call hella stiff. So I just approved the new budget to include 2 new tires. I also spotted some Shinko flat track tires maybe a cheap option. I hate tire shopping. Warehouse still giving , 3 brand new 530 chains , 2 are nickel plated. Used nickel chain is draining , looks very worn.

Well in an effort to keep costs down I just ordered some Skinko flat track tires in a med compound. F & R delivered  $217 , some $60-70 cheaper than the Dunlops. Tubes on order and the warehouse gave up some new rim strips. Once it’s a roller and up on the table it should go quick. Some fabrication required for the brake pedal for right side. Using a stock folding R/S foot peg with stock shifter , brake pedal will be directly below shifter. L/S wil have 2 pegs , one for flat track and another for TTs. Also have a disc brake set up for the Ceriani. Always wanted to race a TT.

I’ve got an NOS Ceriani fork set that I’ve had for years but never used, it’s because of the front brake, I need help figuring out how to make a new mounting bracket for a brake set that will work with the forks.
I’ve thought about selling the forks but just can’t bring myself to do it, Ceriani’s work so well and are kind of rare and $$$ when trying to buy.

Lancer , My new best friend , if you decide to sell , just remember me. You , need to start thinking and lookin at 60s and on race bikes. Something you want to be seen on and build a project. The perfect piece to start with , how bout a salt racer for the street. I’m still lookin for 3 maybe 4 boxes , all the small parts , carbs , throttle , front brake , triple clamps. As soon as it becomes a roller up on the table I can put it on as a mock-up & bleed it. I’ll be able to provide pics , answer ?s , measurements. What you got legs , trees , axle , dampener. I was at  a swap meet this guy had it all and 35mm aluminum headlight ears that he said were Ceriani , his price  after the dance was $2100. Prices vary the early ones are most sought after.  The wheel is a Boriani , not sure about the hub. Find a bike to build with it , it renews the soul when you start a project. I don’t know why now I feel it has to get done quickly , it’s waay over due , clearly I see this as an important  build. I’m unusually excited over this bike , it’s just the sickness settin in.  Come on join the fun build it. You can thank me later !

Lancer is it still in the original wooden shipping crate ? If it is , cha ching , jackpot , $$$$. The right buyer might pay big for his man cave. I know if it was in the crate it might double in value , stupid things like original paperwork or purchase receipt drive that value up even more. Rare idk , valuable oh hell yes !  8-)

Extended budget to $500 , I’m at $440 now and have everything ordered and some allocated for hoses & number plates & oil with $60 to spare. Parts should start showing up soon. Neighbors not gonna be happy with this bike , that’s ok , what are they going to do , move ! Deep guttural evil laughing   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well I’m for sure not puttin the kick starter on the BSA , ol skool push start. Yeah I need some sort of electric roller for the rear wheel. Go to H/F and see what I can invent , power by a battery to be portable , or find a young strong kid to pit for me.

Wow it’s clean , 30 mm legs these are found on small European dirt bikes of the 60-70s Penton , DKW , Ossa , Bultaco , etc.Been trying to get my buddies old Penton to restore for vintage racing , very complete but rusty. That’s the fork for that bike. I’ll let him know. Tanx

It is a race bike , and I’m not wanting to but I think new wheel bearings might be needed. Remember what I said about pushing lots of race bikes around , light yet solid , they roll perfect and you learn to love that feel. These front hubs have small bearing ( less weight and rolling resistance) and tend not to last long. I might have some in the warehouse , if not flea bay or Amazon. New bearings , tires , chain , yeah she gonna roll sweet.

$30 for Timken bearings for F & R hubs. $7.50 a bearing , no shipping , not bad , definitely needed them. Had a glimpse of frame/ rear wheel , you can’t fake 20 years dust , spiders , patina , sweaty , rusty , dusty. Maybe there was a reason it sat so long , the perfect project at the perfect time , maybe.
There is a doubled over brown bed sheet over the frame , been there so long it feels like leather and of course a dead mouse under it. Only $30 left in the till ! Only a tank and a rear hub left in warehouse. The rest is Yamaha stuff , Suzuki stuff , Sportster stuff. Tires and parts probably all show up on the same day.

My buddy who thinks every part should be painted , coated , chromed or polished not pleased with my sweaty patina restore. To appease him I told him I would painstakingly clean it and maybe polish the aluminum tank. I’m cleaning the first part to cross the finish line the front wheel , I hate cleaning spokes. Parts starting to come in. Located 3 milk crates of parts , just can’t get there yet , at least I found them , they aren’t going anywhere.
Maybe later I’ll get there , after this wheel is clean.

Ok , I might just have a hoarding problem. I just hit the jackpot for vintage BSA stuff. I got Amal carbs in 28 , 30 , 32 , slides , jets. Sprockets , disc brake assembly. Nos A&A racing fork leg protectors for the Ceriani. 3 packed solid long milk crates of everything to build this bike. Guess I’m building a vintage flat tracker/TT bike. At least a day or two of goin thru it all but I have seen everything I need so far.

I know this thread has gotten wayyyy off it's orignal topic, but I should give a final update.
Had hip resurfacing surgery on Jan. 30th. (left side)
Was driving my stick shift pickup in 9 days. ( surgen said 4-5 weeks)
Quit using a cane after 3 weeks.
Started riding my bicycle mornings around the neighborhood in 5 weeks.
Today, after 8 weeks I am riding my Thumper again!!!!!!!
Feels great to be back in the wind.

Moral--- Don't put it off! They are doing hip surgery now that is close to a miracle.
