Title: Used Cam Useable?
Post by Moarpower on 11/15/22 at 23:26:57

Hey guys.

I bought this DR650 cam off eBay from Germany. There were only 2 I could find, and the other was twice the price.

I paid 160AUD for this cam. The new prices are about 400-500Aud, and I couldn't find one in stock even if I wanted to use one. THere is some very minor pitting. Most of the marks on the surface are smooth and just discoloured. I can not catch a nail on any of the journal surfaces the marks that look like grooves on the lobes are just the color and i cant feel them at all. The pitting I can feel but there.is only a few spots.

So my question. Will this used cam get me a few thousand miles? Or should I just send it back? They had a no refund policy on their sale page, but if it isn't fit for use, ill be able to get a refund through Paypal.

The journals could be polished, but the lobes are too heavily scored and pitted.  I don't understand how the seller thought that was a useable cam.

I know you are in Australia, but I don't understand why you can't simply buy new Genuine Suzuki parts.  Are there no Suzuki dealers?  You can't buy parts on-line (Partzilla, Suzuki Partshouse, BikeBandit, etc.)?

Hi Mike.
I have tried dealers in my area and interstate and have had no luck sourcing many of the parts I need. Most have come from the USA and New Zealand. As for the cam, the cost of a new one just blows my budget way out. I can get the part online, but it's half what I paid for the bike.

I'll return this item and continue the search.  I thought it may have been useable as there were only a few small pits. Most of what you can see on the surface is just discolouration

UPDATE: I found the part for around 450 AUD on revzilla but they wont ship it to Australia

I have contacted a local cam specialist who make racing cams to see if they can repair it.
If the repair and regrind is still cheaper than the over 630 dollar new part, I'll go that route with a 50 percent refund on the purchase of the cam.

If not, I'll return this cam and the repair will have to wait until after my wedding in February when I can out more money into it.

I believe the dr cams are taller, so you might be able to regrind them to ls spec.

Thanks Vers. I'm hoping to avoid that as I want to get a bit more out of the LS. If regrinding will remove that much material I'll just buy a new one in a few months.

Marrying a rich girl? Are you sure you're even gonna be allowed to keep your bike?

Ok so I have gotten a 50 percent refund for the part and getting it reground. The guys at Teigh racing cams here said the pitting is very minimal and would run for a long time if it was getting oiled correctly. As its going into a different bike they are going the regrind it to its original profile. Will be ready in a week.

The 96.44mm bore is happening today and should be completed tomorrow

What does "original profile" mean?  Is Teigh Cams going to turn it into a stock cam, or are they going to regrind it to the original DR profile with a smaller base circle.  That might be a useful option for guys with a pitted stock cam who want a bit more lift & duration.  I think the valve adjusters might have enough adjustment travel to accommodate a smaller BC.

Very interesting stuff.

They are regrinding it back to the dr650 profile. The pitting was very minor and shallow so it's an easy save in this case. I'll confirm exactly what approach they took when I collect it at the end of next week.
Then I. Just waiting for all the gaskets to arrive and I can put it all back together
