Title: Trip meter options
Post by Smith2 on 08/01/22 at 09:48:32

I've looked around and can't find anything recent. What are good options for a trip meter? Is anyone using one of the GPS speedo's with a trip meter?

If you are going to replace the speedometer anyway, just look around for one that has a trip meter and adapt it to your bike. In the mid 80's the big four standardized the ratios so they will interchange from that point forward. Several of the Suzuki speedometers are an easy swap. The handlebar mounted ones will work if you use a longer cable (tach cable for the old GT750 water buffalo works nicely). Or you can do an entire front end swap from a smaller Intruder (a bolt on swap) that drives the speedometer from the front wheel. Many options out there if you look around.

The people that give the negative reviews for these speedometers usually don't know how to install them or understand Electronics because the instructions are extremely vague

The little magnets that go on the spokes sometimes have to be so close to the sensor that some people have problems getting them to pick up the magnet. If putting the whole thing closer to the axle doesn't get it close enough to read, you can glue one or two neodymium disk magnets to the spoke magnet  and get it to read. Put some glue on the end of the spoke magnet before you stack the neodymium onto it--- if you try it the wrong way, it'll let you know...  ::)
