Title: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/16/22 at 14:04:33

My tracker has been laid up awhile for one reason or another but I think I’m seeing the end is nearing. It’s been getting upgrades, changes, facelift. The bike was a task to disassemble for a frame / swing inspection & cleaning. I purposely beat the bike to death on and off road with a couple almost full send jumps , it’s been tested and proud to say i found no cracks ( was worried about swingarm ). There was only a few spots on the frame I didn’t use tiny dot of blue loctite , the rear set controls didn’t get any and those were the only 2 things I found a little loose. Goal achieved , I built a durable  dependable cool looking bike. So I’m continuing to clean and reassemble. Did not remove engine or swingarm but the rest of it has been gone thru. Got the sickness it’s hard to walk by it without working on it and all thoughts are of riding it ! Gotta go carb cleaning on the board for today while waiting on gearing to arrive. I think Dave did 101 mph and DBM I believe was 107 mph , good to have goals , achievable goals  8-)

107 mph?  Not me.  Maybe someday.

Good luck with the facelift.  It was already way cool, so I assume it will turn out extra way cool.  Post some pics.

Yes, pics!!!

Post by Ruttly on 07/16/22 at 22:17:30

What was your top speed DBM ? You had to have wrung out that bike a time or two. My old SR500  would kiss 110 mph with the wind at my back. I’ve fallen just short of the ton but I’m sure with some changes the ton won’t be an issue. Finding suitable gearing for your powerband takes time & money.

The “before” pics , Tanx Moto
Huge list of upgrades & changes , paint not the only change. The noticeable changes are tank , tires , speedo , paint. The rest are performance items and corrections from original build  , things only I would notice/drive me crazy. A list of all things done would take forever , would be easier if it was broken down to engine or chassis. Trying to get all the little items wrapped up. Where it was out of rpms in the 95mph range , now she’s gonna have some longer legs and who doesn’t like long legs. Finished carb yesterday , some cleaning and start some reassembly on the board for today. Gotta get at it !

Post by Ruttly on 07/20/22 at 20:17:17

Oooo , New rear sprocket arrived. I hope this one works out , I just hate having to use a half link in the chain. And may need to go back to a 17 tooth counter. I was gonna detune a little but with gearing I got I m gonna need to give it a bumper up. I see the boss gotta go

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/21/22 at 07:20:00

just hate having to use a half link in the chain.

Howcumizzat?

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/21/22 at 12:01:07

Quite literally the master link is the weakest link and then add another weak link , not me. On a show bike ok , on my bike that takes me places and then takes me back home , absolutely not.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/22/22 at 20:39:58

I was typing out
I don't understand why it would be weaker when I saw it in my head.. Yeah I get it. But you can get a master link that requires riveting. You gotsta put the chain where it goes put the plate on and mushroom the ends of the pins. My SIL brought his Triumph over to use the shop and my problem solving. There is no way one man is doing that job. The
room to get a swing at it just Isn't sufficient. I built a tool and welded it to a busted air chisel tool, he got on the other side and held a four pound hammer on it and I mashed the ends of the pins.
The typical master link with the slotted spring steel clasp ? After I really tried to envision it under load, I can get it. IDK how big your chain is, but the Savage torque might just be an invitation to a failure. IDK if a half link is available that is a riveted link .  If that sounds like something you would consider, maybe you can find what you need to be comfortable riding with it.
Just looked up riveted master and half link. The stuff is out there.
Hope that helps.

Post by Ruttly on 07/22/22 at 22:40:49

Well maybe I’ll find out this weekend if it all works out. Project is moving forward everyday , little by little. Up

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/25/22 at 13:39:16

New rear sprocket took care of proper chain adjustment without the use of a half link , only problem is if gearing is too tall I’m stuck with it for now I guess I could go to a 17/51 setup. Rear wheel & shocks on , makes my heart pound thinking about riding it. When I look at it it looks like that square on a Monopoly board “do not collect $200 , go directly to JAIL !
It looks like trouble for sure , it just screams chase me

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 07/25/22 at 21:54:54

You really haven't learned the pics lesson, have you?!   8-)  I learned the hard way and ended up with a 18/52 combo on a 4 speed trans.  The chain won't rub, but I won't know how the gear ratio feels until I get the motor rebuilt and the bike running.  The powers that be says it will work well with my hot rodded motor.  Still anxious!

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/26/22 at 12:18:34

Oh its gonna rub something somewhere , mine looks good but on a hard decel/brake it will find something to reach out and touch. But I’m happy with it , still have lots of adjustment left. I built it to take abuse , drive chain  is critical to be set up right , at any given moment this this bike might be in the dirt and then back on pavement , I like detours and short cuts , backroads. Works well thru the full range out travel , no binding but then again I installed a chain tensioner , bet you would like SEE that  ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 07/26/22 at 21:27:39

uh...  YES!  You are clearly slacking.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/27/22 at 22:37:00

Was just checking final ratios , it was at 3.17 just touching the edge of fast where the bike is light under max acceleration almost all weight transfer over rear wheel. WFO launches , 2nd gear barks rear tire on a low wheelie.
Those days are gone new ratio 2.77 but now I’ll be able to better control acceleration at freeway speeds. Not worried about holeshot or wheelies I want better speed results. Engine still has more to give with tuning. Who knows she might run right past the ton. 0-60 , 1/4 mile , top speed , will be read by gps speedo , already have the road picked out that runs between two cattle ranches long flat & straight only a few driveways. I can usually get 2 or 3 runs before he meets me at the gate with a double barrel.  :o

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/29/22 at 12:48:20

The sickness has got his claws into me. During the pandemic I had taken a new hobby and let tracker sit. Absolutely had to drop that hobby to get myself to finish the tracker. Now the sickness is back in force. Tracker 2.0 is
coming along fine.
But along with 2.0 now I’m seeing Tracker 3.0 with modified swingarm with a spool rear hub with disc brake. Where does it end ? Sick !
The ride is only temporary relief for the sickness , but it makes me smile , I have 2 more bikes just waiting for their turn at the table.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/31/22 at 11:26:06

Just got chain on it , everything aligned and tightened. Mail shows up , a Recall notice

Apparently the chicken feathers & pig nostrils used in these Korean made tires don’t supply enough strength and structure to stay together. Cracking and coming apart at speed.

And of course the rear tire is on the recall list but front is not. Another delay !

Continental Contigo tires are the focus of the recall

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 07/31/22 at 11:40:00

I hope I can get a new improved rear tire same as the old one. The stance of the bike is perfect it looks fast , it looks ready for attack , it looks positively wicked with criminal intent , Very pleasing to my eyes !

I hate turn signals , Tracker 3.0 will be stripped , no horn , turn signals , speedo or mirror.
Headlight tail light lic plate that it. Stripped !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 07/31/22 at 21:50:39

Ruttly - I chose the Avon AV53 / AV54 Trailrider Tires.  110/80-18 for the front, and 120/80-18 for the rear. The rims sizes are Front 2.15" and rear is 2.75".

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/01/22 at 07:22:58

I like those. The last set were Kenda 671 in same sizes as yours. Took a lot to balance them , heavy tires , very sloppy handling too but I like that slip sliding around stuff , didn’t bother me a bit. But overall I was after the look and wouldn’t buy those again. Wanted a smooth running street tire for speed & handling , Kenda was like an old hard off road truck tire , but they were fun.
Went with the ContiGo in a 110/80-18 & 120/90-18 a lighter full road tires. That 120/90-18 is a tight fit even on my modified swingarm , it fills up the swingarm. She got long legs, tall rear tire & 18/50 gears.
They rate the adventure tire by what they do better road or trail and that tells me they don’t do either real well. Just sayin. Street tires never kept me from hill climbing hills and riding in the dirt !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 08/01/22 at 09:50:03

I went with an 18/52 combo on my sprockets, but mine is an older 4 speed trans.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/01/22 at 10:28:06

Ryca claimed that was same ratio as the oem belt setup

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/01/22 at 20:18:39

Hey Sneeze , Where were your tires made ? Yeah the Avons , not many options in those sizes. Having no luck finding a comparable set of tires. Oooo I forgot I wonder if they still make road racing slicks in those sizes.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 08/01/22 at 21:07:48

I honestly don't know.  I bought them from Cycle World I believe.  It was a bit of a challenge finding a matching set, and I won't know how good or bad they are until I get it running and the tires scrubbed in.  I liked the look, and didn't want to mix and match brands.  That is one of the down sides to building a bike you have never ridden.  Good, bad, or ugly it will be what it will be when I start to ride it. Improvements will come after it is broken in and I establish a base line.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 08/01/22 at 21:12:23

I just searched, and apparently most if not all Avon tires are made in the UK.

Well, grip is the tell all.  That will be told when the bike gets broken in.  We will see...

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/02/22 at 00:24:41

Were they hard to install on the rim ?

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 08/02/22 at 07:55:47

About as difficult as driving to the local m/c shop and forking over some cash!  With brand new aluminum Sun rims I wasn't going to get anywhere close to scratching them with tire irons.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/02/22 at 10:59:16

I think I did that once and they screwed up rotation on both. They were mags/tubeless so he had it fixed quickly. I actually like doing it. You just have to be smarter than the tire. I may have a unfair advantage , 100 degree days are real common here , I just let it bake in the sun all day and soften up a bit. A big difference between letting it bake in the sun or not. Besides truing wheels , paint work , machine work I do the rest. I would love to have stuff for truing rims.

I made sure to put the rotation on a piece of tape next to the spokes before I gave them to them.  I also verified both installs before paying for the labor.

Painters are flakes , I have one hell of a story about my paintwork , but not only do I believe it would be real bad carma to tell the story. I also told him I wouldn’t never bring it up again or ever have him paint anything again , not even my toe nails !!! Almost cost me the tank & glass. Definitely cost me a friendship , his fault for sure.
However the guy has laid paint on cars for Clapton & Beck , he is good and I tell myself to keep from coming unscrewed at the guy , “it was worth the wait”. Enough said.
I just wanted paint , not a look at me paint job. He kept it simple as requested , it does look good ,  I couldn’t have done what he did ! So next time I see him I will thank him for a job well done , I never thanked him for it , try to bury the hatchet !
Maybe salvage a friendship
Wow, The things I go thru just to get a bike built !

Title: Re: Second coming

Waiting for battery to arrive (Friday) to lay all the wiring in & button up loose ends. Still tire shopping and need to mount ignition switch , being relocated , no longer in tank. Then some engine work.

Surprising how fast it gets done , if you just do one thing no matter how small it is , Everyday ! Progress even if it’s a bolt or a zip tie

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/03/22 at 13:16:08

I hope I don’t have to work this weekend , almost excited to install battery & wiring maybe get to where I can test everything including gps, lights, horn, starter & oh yeah check for spark. Still no tires to be had in a set , I may have to just buy a rear tire that doesn’t match the front for now. Definitely getting excited ,  but still a lot to do , can’t wait to ride it makes my heart pound thinking about it !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/22/22 at 18:13:51

Work hot & heavy , lots of overtime , 10-11 hour days. , 7 days a week the port is busy. But got 99 % of electrical done. First round everything worked but the horn , got it fixed. Trying to be neat & sparingly with the zip ties. Only real problem is where to put the ignition switch , tank no longer has the hole , I may need another switch , maybe no key. Not sure what to do.
Really dislike gps speedo it’s own harness & antenna wires running everywhere , I think this is a temporary speedo at least till I can get some solid numbers of performance. Initial build spawned 16 boxes of parts & junk for R & D , left overs , maybe some stuff to sell too. Not to mention some interesting revelations as well to be exposed/revealed along with the performance outcome.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/22/22 at 20:08:02

Sorted all those boxes , thru out a lot of crap , sorted the hardware and got it down to 4 maybe a fifth box of take off stuff that I can’t find. Tried of all the crap from now on only one box per bike and 1 box of general misc motorcycle stuff. I’ve been throwing stuff out and will continue throwing the crap out till the garage is more manageable. Gotta make room.

Get this , the painter wants to do the photo shoot. The paint work didn’t come back for 3 years. You might be in for a wait ,  Lmmfao
Sorry here your on my Ol Skool time absolutely no instant gratification here.
But I’ll see what I can do , no peeking !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/24/22 at 14:10:53

So the other day I ran into my painter. So I thanked him and told him job well done , it is very sexy and evil at the same time. Told him he would be the first to see it and then he said he wanted to do the photo shoot , my skin started crawling but I bit my tongue and said ok yeah sure. I was so mad when I got the stuff back I almost sanded the paint off just to take a pic for him to see , the ultimate insult , fighting words. I guess I’m glad I didn’t !? Maybe I’m still just a tad pissed off , just sayin , just a tad.
Go ahead someone scream at me “get over it “
Nope , I’m still pissed  ;D

Stand to support the axle. Wire pointers next to the rim, your eyeballs can see when the rim deviates, and another wire to show you run out, so you can get the rim the same distance from the axle .   You don't need gauges. A few feet of 1x10, coupla lengths of anything sturdy enough to not deflect when you handle the rim, and a few inches of stiff wire. Put a 90 in your wires, so you can twist them to put them closer to the rim as you get it closer to straight and true.
It's some tedious stuff the first few times.

I found a truing jig at Harbor Freight. I didn’t buy it I’m trying to clean out the garage not bring more stuff home.

Nice...   I can only hope.  The hard part is about to start for me - the tedious job of cleaning, painting, and assembling the motor.  Afterwards comes the wiring.  Yeah, it's gonna take some time, but I have a lot of firewood, and Fall's a comin"!

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 08/31/22 at 14:00:15

Alright after 2 weeks of searching I finally found a new set of tires to replace the recalled Continentals. Seems like I was on every website that sold tires with no luck , so I tried Amazon. Managed to find a set of Dunlop D404 , 1 front , 1 rear they are different tread patterns but a matching set. I may never buy another Continental tire. $$$ Dunlop’s not at all both tires shipped for free , tires & taxes $194. Not really liking the tread patterns but will make it more stable on loose terrain , aka DIRT. No matter how hard I try it will wind up doing stupid stuff off road. Gotta go order tubes.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/31/22 at 20:33:02

I ran Dunlop for a while, Coupla rear, one front lasted for the the life of the two rears,IIRC. I think I did Metzlers after that. I need to see what is on it. It's been parked behind the shop for going on three years. Seems like I got the pair for about a cheeseburger and a malt less than two hundred.
Something about having fun and getting much more than five thousand miles outta any rear tire is just not easy.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/01/22 at 12:36:34

I may not like tread design but knowing it’s a Dunlop makes me much more relaxed. I’ve been on Dunlop’s for years n years. They will do just fine , not as gummy as the Continental but they will last longer. Maybe the tread will look better after I straighten out a few backroads with them !? Hope overall shape of the tire is near to the Continental (slick with a few grooves) cause they look very aggressive. Hope to at least get the rear tire on this weekend and all adjusted up with a new roller on the tensioner. Ignition switch is gonna drive me nuts!!!

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by TheSneeze on 09/01/22 at 13:22:04

My Avons have a more aggressive dirt tread than those Dunlops, but I have no idea how they feel or wear.  I bought them on a size and looks match alone.  But I guess I will find out if the $$$ was well spent or not.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/02/22 at 14:13:56

They have to look cool, tire shape and size create a stance , a attitude , a intimidating factor to your competition in your eyes and hopefully theirs too. This is why shapes and lines are so critical and color is secondary. Heat wave maybe 110-115 today have tire baking in my oven called the back yard , yeah soften those tires up a bit , Dunlop’s are like trying to install a truck tire with a popsicle stick , maybe one more coffee !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/02/22 at 19:23:40

They lied , it was only 109 today. And Dunlop tires put up a good fight , hella sidewalls. My hands and arms will be hurtin later. Always a challenge, never easy , not one drop of blood shed , wish I could say that about the sweat. I already don’t like the shape of the rear and they are heavier than the Recalled tires. Really trying to keep it at or under 315 lbs. , I did say trying , lose a little gain a little , have no idea what it weighs. I’m so mad at Continental , keep shopping for something , something intimidating and sexy. But for now it’s all about the truck tires  , I mean Dunlops. Still a great tire just not what I was looking for.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by DragBikeMike on 09/02/22 at 19:27:37

I hear ya Ruttly.  Just threw a set of those 404s on my hoops and it was a flat-out B!tch of a job.  Those suckers are stiff and heavy.  I hope they last a long time cuz I'm not lookin forward to doin it again.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/03/22 at 00:12:44

Yup , my arms feel longer for some reason. While installing it I remember seeing these tires on sportsters and gold wings. One tire iron went flying still haven’t found it. They should last awhile , I like Dunlop’s just not fond of these. Boy baking them in the sun for hours before installing really softened them up and it was still a battle , not a epic battle but a good battle , I Win ! Again !

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/04/22 at 17:31:43

Yeah I’ll be waiting before I mount the front 404 , maybe I’ll get lucky and find some slicks  or some nasty stickies of some sort. Like DBM said stiff  & heavy , these 404s look like oem tires the sport/touring look ,unappealing to me , well let’s say not a good look on the tracker. So what happens next well I ride the bike and fall in love with the tires. I want to change them before that happens. just another delay. 110 here today time for the pool and a beer.

Title: Re: Second coming
Post by Ruttly on 09/25/22 at 10:13:31

Got both of the Dunlop D404s on finally. And as suspected it lost its stance that was so perfect. Front tire is taller and the rear is lower and narrower I know the rear is bigger than the front but on the bike they about the same. Bike is more level now than it was before with the Continentals lower in front & taller in the rear , looked way more aggressive and evil. I know it’s a good tire , 10 times the tire of the old Kendas, gonna ride like it’s on a rail , but they gotta go. It won’t be anytime soon but they gotta go. 4 dismounts , 4 mounts and balances , hella work to make the bike look worse. I need a drink !

Good thing I live here cause summer is slipping away, again. For the exception of some freezing or rainy days , it a mild winter here. Ride all year long or everyday if you gear up for the weather. I will ride the tracker this year. There shouldn’t be any bugs to work out , think I got them all or will before it hits the road. After that it becomes a daily rider or any time I can swing a leg over it and go !

Remove trickle charger , half gallon fuel , turn key hit run switch , turn fuel on , bit of choke and just a smidge of happy button. Almost instantly it fires and bump idle up , getting a fan on the engine , open side door choke off , some good air flow on engine( bike still on table). Oil level good , give it a couple whacks on the throttle , oh yeah

And even the left over smell of burnt gas lingering in the garage keeps the smile going.

You’re right it is fun , makes me want to drain the gas out and start over ! Then I get “ya know you’re stinking the whole house up” from a crack in the door. My reply was “yeah I am , love you” as the door slams. She knows I’m on I high and she’s not winning , this one. A totally lame attempt to derail my FUN ,  ;D ;D ;D

Ya know BOT , Even with the these fugly tires she still looks Evil  just not as it did with the Continentals. I’m not saying anything else and members here deserve a peek. The Painter wants to do the photo shoot , maybe new tires before then. Don’t hold your breath but at least a pic or two is due. I owe it to everyone for puttin up with me for all these years. For now if you email me  you’ll get a peek , it’s still on deck !

MRI done , new Beon helmet , an Amazon helmet , surprise to find out it’s a Shoei. Working on seat , brackets done , pan done , shaping 2 different density foams for cushion , so I , so my butt will have a choice. I’ll see how badly I can make the cover before it goes to the upholstery shop cross town
that I have recruited for the task , 2 super cool low riders at the shop , one done in leather. Thinking leather for top panel , vinyl sides. I really don’t care I just need a seat. I just want to ride it , test n tune , get data and then it becomes a daily rider. Gettin there. Soon as my hip is better , me and the tracker are gonna run right past that ton mark. Hopefully as fast as it is evil.   Big fun this spring , big fun !

Finish the seat and heal this hip. I’ll start with 10-15 minute rides around town when it’s ready and work my way up from there. Some minor adjustments , maybe some test n tune if needed (always needed).
Spring is on its way ! I really surprised I haven’t stuck some foam to the fiber glass and went riding , must be the hip thing. I want to heal so I can ride. Maybe 3/20/23 I’ll try a short ride , first day of spring.
