Title: Cut out when put into gear
Post by Niallmac on 07/11/22 at 04:35:31

Hi

I’m having a problem whereby the engine starts up fine but stops as soon as I put it into gear. Almost like it had an ‘intelligent’ side stand that cuts the engine when put into gear with it down.

Any thoughts please?
Cheers
Niall

It'll do that if the sidestand is down

Yup,.. test that switch.  or bypass with a jumper.  You can access the 2 wire connector under the seat.

It's working perfectly as designed.  The side stand needs to be "up" when you put it in gear.  There is indeed a switch for that.

Now, if only there was a way to prevent getting off the bike without the side stand down.... :-/

I did try it with the stand up as I thought it might have a switch but it did the same. Is there a way of testing the switch?

Does it Jump and die?
If you pull the clutch lever, put it in first, engine off, can you roll it?

Not really a jump but it does feel like a stall…

Do you have it idled down to get a loping idle sound?
It's supposed to be up around 1,100 RPM, IIRC.
If I'm wrong, someone will have the right answer.

Pull the clutch lever
Put it in first gear
If it doesn't roll pretty easily
Maybe The clutch is not disengaged enough to not kill it.

You can try picking it up off idle and drop it in gear. But be holding the front brake.

You know you better be on it for that,,

If that isn't it, then digging into the wiring at the sidestand switch is probably the next step.
Surely the people who know these things inside and out are following this and Hopefully, if I'm steering you wrong, someone will step in and take over for me. It's been a coupla years since I even had one. And I forget stuff.

Thanks Justin
Will have another play on that basis when I’m back with the bike. Hopefully at the weekend.

Yep. Did.
Had to put a coil in the left side mirror stem after.  It was in my own garage and I was alone, but still embarrassing.

Apologies for misreading your post.  Looks like you're getting good help, which is to be expected here.

I don't Need a witness to get embarrassed. I can feel that pain all by myself.

OK I've just checked the bike and it doesn't appear to have a side stand switch.

Photo attached.

Were the 1994 bikes fitted with them? Or am I missing something?

I have a 95 and my kickstand doesnt look anything like that.

Sooooo, not sure what to tell you.

Either its an aftermarket stand and they already shorted the wires farther up, or perhaps I just havent seen one like that.

You may have to trace some wires.

Did this just start happening out of the blue?

Clutch adjusted ok?  Broken clutch push rod? Neutral switch?

I've not ridden it since I bought it in 2014 as a donor bike for a RYCA kit.

It was finally re-visited late last year. I'm just checking with the guy that did the work whether he rode it. More recently it needed a new coil and carb de-gunged as it's been standing too long.

Clutch seems fine. You can push it in gear. Also the neutral works (including the light).

I'm pretty sure the engine and stand are not messed with as part of the kit.

So this has a ryca kit?  If so they have removed the kickstand switch and shorted the wires together.

If their shorting job is coming loose you may be having some issue there.

The stock kickstand is way too short for any of the cafe kits so they remove the mount and use their own.  The kickstand switch is usually removed from all the ones Ive seen.

Ah, ok that would explain it. Thank you. Do you know what colour leads I should be looking for please?

If, in your trouble shooting, you decide you need to turn the key on for a while, you might want to disconnect the ignition module. They can die if the key is on for too long. I Think it only happens if the piston is at TDC,and since it's a wasted spark ignition, it's going to fire the plug on exhaust, too. I'm pretty sure it's not gonna cook it if it's not at TDC and continuously firing the plug, but that thing is expensive and unplugging it is Really cheap, so I would unplug it.
I'm following this thread several times a day. Looking forward to you telling us what the deal Was.

It might have Ryca clutch bypass too  I think they repurposed the relay so it can’t be started unless clutch is disengaged. I can’t remember, look on utube for Ryca videos they called it the clutch mod

I think it was an early Ryca kit so it may not have a clutch mod. I’ll check…

That’s  a Ryca kickstand the relay maybe under the tank near the coil

Interesting as I had the coil changed recently. I wonder if some was displaced…
