Title: S40 Exhaust Header Pipe
Post by MiamiBobbed on 04/09/22 at 07:53:34

So as I try to get this old girl, who sat out in the South Florida elements for 3-4 years, back on the road, I find that the exhaust header pipe is rusted through. Curiously after I take it off to wire brush it to see how large the rot is I see what looks like a pristine pipe on the INSIDE. Are these exhaust pipes DOUBLE layered? Is there an inner and outer pipe? If so how would I go about having a muffler shop make me a new one, with the INNER diameter as the header size? Or would it be better just to replace it with a decent used one and not worry about it? Thanks guys!

yep, dual layer.  outside pretty, inside ugly.

1.5" diameter should be fine.

I had a friend who dated her!

You can just run it ugly till you get everything sorted out.

So, I am guessing that having a new header made the same size as the OUTER diameter would be bad as it is apparently just for show? If so I see (kind of) why the header is double layered.

and on mine the outside is ugly but the inside is the pretty part!

Double wall headers help to keep the outer pipe from getting really hot, and that helps to keep the chrome from changing colors....but it doesn't always work.  If your bike is not jetted properly or you spend a lot of time in traffic and/or ride in really hot climates the pipe color can change.

The stock inside header is about 1-1/4" diameter and that is a bit small.....the outer pipe is about 2" and that is a bit big for a stock engine.  Having a pipe made 1-1/2" would be just fine.....larger diameters as you hop up the engine are OK.

I have a spare pipe that is not great and it is rusty......but there aren't any holes.  You pay shipping you can have it.

Dave thanks for the reply. If you think the pipe you have can be cleaned up a bit, some hi-temp paint shot on it and wrapped then I'll take it!

The front side looks pretty good.

The backside has some light rust and grunge.....it is the best "free" header that I have.

I have it boxed up and I will get a price for shipping tomorrow.
