Title: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 01/28/22 at 15:28:38

Hay ,

I put a bid in on a DR200 today.   Its a Kawasaki dealer in one of the next town over.

He took it in on trade in for a Kawasaki 230 pure dirt bike.  The owner of the shop had the idea to keep it for the rear bumper of his RV , and didn't want to let it go.
So
I reminded him that he can't do that ... and that he's a KAWASAKI Dealer , that he can't be seen ridding a Suzuki !!  ::)

I left him my phone # and an offer of $2,500.    I'll bet he didn't give anything near that for "Trade-in-value" ?

We'll see if he calls .   I think January sales at a bike shop is the lowest month of the year ?   :-/

I am kinda' sorta' in the market for one....when the right one comes along.  It would be nice to have a bike for the camper.....and I really would like to go ride in Moab, Utah....or some other remote off road area out west before I get too old.

I think a 250 is a nice size if you don't want to go over 60mph and are OK with staying off the interstate.  I owned a Kawasaki Super Sherpa for a few thousand miles.  It was a nice bike for local rides - at 282 pounds it was a bit heavy for a 250cc dirt bike!

I like the Yamaha XT250 , TW200 , and the Suzuki Van-Van  too.   They are all below 300#'s.

I'd think the  Kawasaki Super Sherpa would fit right in with the group .  Do ya wish ya still had it once in a while ?

Sloans have these for $3k new :  https://sloansmotorcycle.com/Murfreesboro-Tennessee-37129/New-2022-Benelli-TNT135/VDP/796a492e-65a2-4cac-8e63-397ed3cc65ce

But the fuel tanks are 1.9 gallon but that should be 150 miles ?

Hay Ruttly

There are so many differently fun looking bikes out there which one do you want to have for a while ?

DR 200 is a excellent choice , nothing to fear with a little thumper , an eye dropper for a carb , killer mpg , go anywhere it gets traction , nothing but fun and huge smiles. Great bikes for short errands and trail riding all day long.

Still laughing

My dual purpose bike is a 1986 Honda TLR 200 Reflex. Restored with many improvements , a street legal trials bike , my old man vintage bike. And my buddy has 70s Kawasaki 125/175 enduro that’s all OEM , 2 very cool functional vintage dual purpose bikes of the era.

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 01/29/22 at 11:02:16

Hay that  Honda TLR 200 Reflex looks as good as the Suzuki DR200 does !  I had to look to see what a TRL was.  ::)

I'm hoping the guy decides to sell it but don't know that he will. ??   :-/

I like the looks of the Himalaya too , but ... for as tall as it is , its almost too heavy .   I went to the dealer a few weeks ago and sat on one for a nice long spell .   But the 80mph top end would be nice  and the 411cc of low speed pull would be good too.  the 200cc bikes are about 150#'s lighter.   Heck , far as I know one could lower the Himalaya till it wasn't top heavy anymore ?

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by Dave on 01/29/22 at 11:24:10

I would like to own a Reflex.  I just had the chance to buy an Ossa MAR 350.  I have always wanted to own one.  It was ran well and had been maintained - but it was dropped a lot and to be presentable the fiberglass tank and other bodywork would have needed to be replaced ($1,500), and the bike was never titled or licensed.....that would be a problem for me in Kentucky and I could never get it titled/licensed.  Going through the motions of getting it titled/licensed in another state and then transferring it over to KY just seemed like too much of a hassle.  Plus - hauling a stinky Pre-Mix 2 stroke in my camper would have caused some friction between me and my significant other.

I had also been toying with the idea of getting a Trail 90/110.  The Reflex would be a whole lot more satisfying.

I really should get a bike that can go in the camper.....and that we could ride double for short distances.

It’s got lots of goodies on it , stock wet weight was 240 lbs,got it down to 220 lbs with turn signals & mirrors. Might do 50 mph , geared low enough to climb anything I might be stupid enough to try. Air down the radial rear trials tire when things get tough , it goes anywhere just not at freeway speeds.

I "think" I want to ride this kind of stuff before I am a geezer.

I rode/raced dirt as a kid, I feel qualified to ride like this - I just haven't done it in 40 years (I did ride trials 2009 - 2014 when I owned my Sherco).

No - I have a GT, which is the most touring oriented version of the F800.

The F800ST had a bit smaller bodywork, lower handlebars, footpegs set farther back and a smaller windscreen - later they improved the bike for more comfort and named it the "GT".
The F800GS is the adventure touring version with more off road ability.
The F800R is the naked version of the bike.

The GS is more off road capable with more suspension travel, less bodywork, more ground clearance, more protection if it falls over, and chain drive.  The seat height is about 34 inches - that is a bit tall for my 30" inseam. A friend that owned a GS felt like BMW designed the gearbox for the road versions of the bike, as first gear was a bit too tall for off road.  If you geared the bike down for better use of 1st gear off road - then the road ability suffered.

I agree with the guys in the first video , #300# is plenty of bike for those kind of roads !   ;)

I couldn't help but wonder ???

Those guys in the first video were going over the mountain down into the valley below.
All fine and good , right !
Well
Those bikes they were on might not be so good as taking the long way around back  to their trucks on the other side ?
So !!!!
I want the see the video of them going back up the back side !  ;D ;D ;D

Even better would be to watch that guy on the F800 going up the back side ?    ;D ;D ;D ;D
.............

I'm thinking a trip to Cade's Cove might be adventure enough for me. ???

A skid plate and dual sport tires on a Savage ?   :-?   Naw , the gearing would be all wrong .

My little Honda loves mountain passes, but looses some power in elevation , it might not keep pace with bigger bikes but then again slow enough to enjoy the scenery, lol . I’ve had it far beyond off road trails on to hiking trails and close to some peaks until the terrain and the remoteness begins to , well maybe not scare me but make me realize I may have taken a quiet trail ride and turned it into an extreme adventure and this is no place to crash. It’s easy to get in trouble when alone up there. No big power definitely not fast but it will take you farther up a mountain than you ever expected to go. Big Fun.

Dave , A Honda 90/110/125 will billy goat to the upper reaches with ease. I still want another one it’s just a matter of finding a good one. I owned 6 over the years, without a doubt absolutely the funnest bike money can buy ! A pack of trail 90s with a pack of old farts going to the top would be Big Fun

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?

Ruttly:

One of the reasons I sold my Sherco - was nobody around here had one to ride with me.

I would go to the Big Rock off road park in Maysville, KY and ride sometimes.  They had a bunch of earth moving tires half buried and stacked that I could climb around on - but they had 2,000 acres and I would go explore.  The Sherco wasn't any fun on the smooth roads, and I would find the gnarliest eroded trails to make the trials bike fun.  I could ride for hours and not see anyone.....and that started to scare me.  They did make you sign in and if I didn't sign out they would eventually come looking for me - but I rode in places that were not easy to get to!  The Sherco was so good at getting over rough terrain!

I am still looking for a nice little Honda Trail 90/110....or maybe even the newer 125.  The new one doesn't have the dual speed transmission....I think I want to have the dual range.

So , Dave

If I get one of those little 135 street legal mini bikes from Sloan's (they ride double too) , then what are you going to ride ?

Yea , we got till spring .   ;)     Maybe , after we get back from Texas ?

That Kawasaki dealer hasn't call yet ???   :(   But its not been a week yet ?

There might be another one come along ?

Nice ride MM......looks like it has a massive pool of oil under the kickstand! ;)

No....you won't get me riding a Grom or a Benelli mini bike.  I am not that old and feeble yet, and I still want to ride a real motorcycle.

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 02/01/22 at 16:38:34

looks like it has a massive pool of oil under the kickstand!

::)

If it was in my house , I'm sure Marcia would require a massive pool of oil under it too !   ;D

................

So , today I went by and checked on the other one in the next town over , The Kawasaki dealer still want to keep it ... so it looks like I'm going to Knoxville tomorrow.  The blue one must have been indoors most of its life , its a 2004 model and still looks that good.
I can't help but wonder :   Should I use double the money and get the Himalaya ?   :-?

The DR200 seems to be a real BIKE !
Of all the other one similar to it ... the DR has the bigger fuel tank of the under 300# bunch

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 02/02/22 at 17:39:58

Well ,

We went and got it today !   :)

Its only got 2,134.6 miles on it.   After inspecting it up close ...

There's a ding in both sides of the tank (tiny)
One side has a touch of rash in one spot.

The headlight has one bolt and two zip ties holding it on.

The seat bolts are missing ???

A young fella about 20 had it , and I guess he don't know Auto Zone sells 6mm bolts in little bags almost as cheep as zip ties .   ::)

I'll take it to my shop in the next day or two to see what else is 'Zip-Tied" !   ::) ::)

I'm thinking :
Pull the fuel tank and pressurize (maybe ... 75#'s) it to make sure the sides are not popped in a little , and do some light buffing on it.

So , its a 18 year old bike with only 2K miles on it ?    Looks to me like somebody skins a knee on it --- then parks it in the back corner for 16-17 years ?
Don't know how this young man get ahold of it but ... I'll go to the court house tomorrow to make sure every thing is on the up and up .  :-?

I just came across this article yesterday:  https://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-news/john-wayne-s-honda-sells-for-half-its-estimate-ar194573/pictures.html#1051167

The SL350 was "supposedly" Honda's fist dual sport.  No matter what you call it, this particular specimen is gorgeous.

Post by MMRanch on 02/03/22 at 15:00:41

Hay Tocsik
You want to trade ?

Really I'd rather have the 360 version .

But yea ,  I could live with the 250 Rebel motor on the same style , heck the light 250 Rebel motor would be great in a bike like that.

I had a CB350 (1971) it was a great little bike , but a little heavy for a dual sport (36 HP-??/330#)  It was a lot like a Savage !   :)

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by Dave on 02/03/22 at 16:11:54

When I was just getting into motorcycles I had a 1972 Kawasaki F6, 125 Enduro.  We had several abandoned strip mines nearby where all the locals guys would go riding.  They had lots of steep hills, and fun roads with plenty of places to jump.

There were 3 or 4 guys that had Honda SL350's who were really good riders.  They had knobbies on their bikes, and I was amazed how they could climb the un-groomed slopes with all the loose dirt.  They would be throwing a rooster tail of loose dirt behind them as the bike clawed it's way to the top!

A few years later we could get real dirt bikes in our rural area and those guys were riding and racing Husqvarna, and I had a Suzuki TM125 I raced.  (I was small and light and the 125 fit me very well).

https://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Suzuki_TM125

Looks "LIGHT"  to me !

I was looking at HP rating for the 250 Rebel (17HP) and the DR200 (20HP) , ...
I'll guess this DR would FLY with only you on it !

I put a manual petcock on it today and pressurized the tank to pop the knee spot out of the right side of it today. (60 lbs did it)
Also I got some "touch-up" paint to cover the "touch of rash" on the right side too.  Its drying now.  :)
There's a spot where the seat touches the tank that needs a touch of paint too.

Dave , Which one's  you looking at ?  :-?

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by Dave on 02/04/22 at 04:59:14

The TM125 weighed 189 pounds, it had 17.5 HP @ 10,000 rpm and it was a great bike for my 135 pound body!

I could keep up with just about any size bike/rider - the only thing I could not do on it that the big bikes could do is to climb the un-groomed strip mine slopes.......the bike just didn't have the HP/torque needed to claw up the steep and loose rock.

(See MM......I used to get my bikes dirty). ;)

I liked my old CD175 even if 60mph was fast on it !

Chain guard enclosed

One carb simple

excuse me : I need to go to Ebay and see if a pair of those fenders are listed now !  ;)

The F6 125 and F7 175 were nearly identical.  The only change to the engine was a bore increase to get the extra 50cc, a larger carb, and I believe they put electronic ignition on the 175.  The stripes were changed from red to bluish purple on the 175.

Both bikes had rotary valve engines and they ran really well for their size.  They had a lot of torque for a 2 stroke.

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?

Well how you liking that DR 200 MM ?

Yea Ruttly I like it .   There are some very big differences in street tires and dual sport tires I had forgot about !

Those dual sport tires don't corner anywhere near as good as the street tires !

This DR200SE only has 2100 miles on it and the original tires are still on it.

The story so far ... its been cold outside here in TN. :
It gets down to 20 mph in 5th gear with no problem and still pulls off when asked to.
It runs up to 65 mph very easy , I'll wind it out after the weather warms up a little .
Taking off in second gear makes more sense than taking off in first .  I might change the sprockets for that , and the top speed too ?
The 248 pounds is nice !
I'll get a luggage rack before too long and put either a milk crate or a small soft bike trunk ?  :-?
I understand it should get near 90mpg , but it starts without the choke in 60 deg. weather , I might visit that latter ?
The bike has set-up for a few years and the mid-range has a dead spot - Sea Foam is working on that now !  ;)

So far the only disappointment has been it spins the tire on wet mud easier than I would have thought .   The last dirt bike I had was a Honda XR200 with full knobblies these dual sport tires aren't even close to what the full Knobblies were .   The rear tire is about 1/2 gone already so I'll be dealing with the traction issue soon enough .  :)   Its a 18" so lots of options are out there !

Thanks for asking , I think we all should have one of them , Suzuki 200cc is 20 HP , don't know for sure about the other brands ?

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by Ruttly on 02/08/22 at 11:05:35

MM , It does have a happy button ?  I wish my TLR 200 had a happy button. I may have to put a later model XR 230 in it , more power , more torque and a happy button , no brainer!

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 02/08/22 at 17:00:55

more torque and a happy button

:-?

I'm guessing  that would be a "Starter" button ?   :)

..........................

I had a Yamaha XS-650 without one ... That was the first bike I ever missed having one on.   But it usually started on the first or second kick - if ya kicked like ya meant it!   ;D

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by MMRanch on 02/19/22 at 20:16:28

Well , the tires are 2004 vintage with only 2100 miles on them ,

but

I just ordered a new set of Shinko 700's for it just because those old tires worry me a little.

I also went up from 100/90-18 to a 4.60-18 on the rear and a little larger on the front too , 70/90-21 to a 3.00-21.   I'm sure they will fit , and I hope they aren't heavier enough to make much difference.

I started to go with the Shinko 705's adventure tires , but I have two street bikes so keeping the knobblies seems like a good idea.  The Shinko 700's get good reviews for running the roads some too !   These are 60/40 tires.

Title: Re: Dual Sport Anyone ?
Post by Dave on 04/01/22 at 04:38:43

Well - I got a dual sport....maybe even one of the "first"!

It is only 7HP - but it does have a dual range transmission, big rack, altitude compensating carb, and in it's prime got 100 mpg or so.

It does need some attention to get it back into shape to be a daily rider.  The front tire is original and 48 years old....the back tire is only 22 years old - both tires, rims and spokes are going to be replaced.  Same with the brake shoes, fork boots and seals, rear shocks....and the engine could use new gaskets and seals to be completely oil tight.  The frame and swing arm need to be painted to fix the damage done when an old battery leaked acid.

It is definitely old school..........

I used to like the IRC-110 on my DP bike.
Notice the center knobs overlap creating a more solid run down the middle of the tire.  Less cupping wear on the knobs with street use.

Hay I like that tire ... I just got the Shinko 700's mounted so they have to wear out first (can't be "waisting" anything).   ;)

Congradulatiions Dave , I had thought about the Trail 125 ... but the old 90 is more than I would want to take on !  :-/

I know it will be looking good when you get it all fixed up !   :)

We need to have an "Adventure" with our dirt bikes when you get your ready .
You are keeping it "Street Legal" aren't ya ?   :-?

There should be an epic but mild dirt trail somewhere that someone on this site knows about. ?

Heck , by time the Trail 90 is up and running good there may be more than just the two of us ?  ::)

The bike originally had 2.75x17 Yokohama knobbies - those are no longer available.  The only real options are a trials tread tire - or the Shinko 244 dual sport tire which was originally called the Golden Boy!  (Seems the name created by the oriental marketing team doesn't translate very well and create a rugged image).

The tire gets really good reviews from the dual sport community and offers really good road and trail performance at a budget price.

Hay !

Those look like the ones that came on my DR200 that I just replaced !!

The rear was wore down enough to not have grip on wet woods floor.   And they were 2004 vintage too !!!   ::)     I would have left them on for a bit more ... but ... 18 years old is old enough that I didn't feel good about ridding the road with them .

So , your putting the original size back on it ?

I was watching a vidio of the Yamaha TW200 going places that mine won't go and got the idea that I should have gone with a fatter shorter tire ... but I've got these on there now so till they wear our ... What it is - is - What it is ! ;D

I am going as close to original as I can.  The original was a 2.75x17 and they don't make that size in a dual sport tire....the closest I can come is a 2.50x17 front which they claim is almost the same size as the original - and the rear is a 3.00x17 which is just a bit wider.  With only 7HP there really isn't an excess of HP to drive big tires.  I really don't want trials tires as they just don't look right on the bike....it needs a more aggressive tire to look like it originally did.
