Title: Savage Trike
Post by Armen on 01/13/22 at 06:36:48

Not sure if this is the right place, but I had to post it somewhere!
Was at the local independent shop, and got to talking Savages. Shop owner loves them. Built a few cruisers/bobbers/whatever.
Then he says "I even have one thats a trike!".
Gotta see it.
Bought it from someone who did the deed. Not a conventional trike. It's a kit that you basically back a bike into, and bolt it up. Different adapters for different bikes. Even has leaf springs. You have to adjust the springs so that the trike wheels travel with the bike wheels.
He swears it rides great, and can turn on a dime!
Of course, I had to check. With all that weight, the rear pulley bearing was murdered. Told him I'd bring by a bearing and modified spacer next time I came by. Maybe I can get a ride on the beast!

Never saw anything like that. Kind of a neat idea.

It's a quad though.

Trikes have a differential where the rear motorcycle wheel usta be.

This one's got giant training wheels :)

Looks like a bike being self trailered.

I test road one like that years ago.  It scared me to death.
Rear brake is useless and front brake plows you straight ahead no matter what.
Not safe at anything over golf carts speeds.

I remember seeing a booth at the NY Motorcycle show many years ago with these contraptions - or something very similar.  That was many years ago.  I don't think I've ever seen one on the road.

Apparently they sold for $3-4K.
The lady who owned the Savage had it done.
She sold the bike to my bud for about the price of a decent Savage.
I’m sure the brakes are eye opening. But, all he’ll do is put a box on the back and use it to go get parts or coffee 5 minutes away.

If I'm too old to ride, I'll get a junked out miata. I don't figure I'm riding if it won't lean in a corner. Sidecars Look cool, but require a conservative rider. I'm not Good at that. The trike setup is a heavy load and won't lean, except for the two seconds prior to landing on your head. The newfangled fancy three wheelers that flop over turning? IDK..Hafta rent one and see what that is about. Still, it's just Not my idea of riding..

Hey Justin,
I too wonder what to do when I can’t ride three wheels. A bud rented a Harley trike and said it was great. Lots of graybeards buying them now, so there should be a ton of used ones down the road.
Miata sounds like a good compromise. My fantasy vintage car is a ragtop Kerman Ghia, but for what a decent one goes for, you can get a Miata with brakes, A/C, handling, and appliance-like reliability.
I put enough miles on sidecars to know they aren’t for me.

Some Velcro grips and pegs and I’m ready for some drunk riding , LOL

JOG and training wheels , like carrots and peas.

That those Kharmans are so popular is a bummer, but honestly, shifting a VW is not exactly invigorating. It's like a plunger in a bucket.

My plan on being an "old" rider.....is to just keep getting lighter motorcycles until even those get too heavy.  The Savage that I am currently building will have mid mount pegs and an upright seating position and become my Geezer Glyde"....it should weigh around 340 pounds and have a reasonable seat height.

When that becomes too heavy......maybe a Suzuki TU250 or something similar.   I am still looking around for a Honda Trail 90 or 110 to add to the fleet.

Very reasonable plan, Dave
