Title: Events for 2022
Post by MMRanch on 01/10/22 at 18:49:01

I hope its not too early for this thread ?

So , the thought I had about going to the    Bike Week Campground fair grounds for a campout in March isn't going to happen

https://bikeweekcampground.com/
.....................

Am I the only one itching for a warm ride ?

Hay I was just watching an episode of "Only in America" .,
Well , Larry was at a place in Houston TX called "Goode Company BBQ", Where's our SCOUT in Houston at ?
this could be a stop on the way to South Texas if we go this year ?

https://www.goodecompany.com/

Might be a bit Pricey but there might be another place more "Wallet-Friendly" near by ?
2 meats , jalapeno cheese bread and 2 sides $18.50 .  Some times at some places - the servings can be so big that Marcia and I split an order ?

Dang Dave !!!  :) ;D :)

I had one just like that ... except it had a Yamaha 650 twin motor instead of the "V" motor .

yea , I extended the frame by 8 inches in the rear and put a 10" over and 10 deg. rake on it.  I painted it burn orange metal-flake.
On the long mountain sweepers around El Paso it was really sweet !   All that wheel base made it "DRIFT" like a dream , but it wouldn't been worth a hoot in somewhere like the WOLF PEN GAP.

I don't have any surviving pictures of it or I'd post one.
............................

I was expecting Springman to give us a report after taking his date to the BBQ place .

OK so no Daytona bike week. How does a Texas Hill Country ride sound?

I would really like to see you guys sometime this year. If not the Hill Country, what else?

Title: Re: Events for 2022

Agreed !  :)   It would be an odd year for us not to gettogether at least once or twice !

Marcia might not be interested in seeing the Hill country this year (been there and done that thing) .
So , unless she changes her mind then I'm for getting the cabin in Kerrville for a week , and ridding the Savage with leaving the truck at home .

Last time I did a similar thing it was :
Ride the Natchez trace to the campground on the south end for day one , then on to Kerrville for day two.
But it could be ride to Houston for day two and on to Kerrville on day three ?
Retirement is good !

......................

I went to Bike week in 2014 but couldn't get anybody to ride there with ... but went anyway.    The Campground where they have the swap meets and the bike shows is the place to stay .   They have a week long camping  deal too .  Last time I only stayed for  three days but after thinking about it for after few years ... I think "day ridding" out of  the campground would have been a good plan .   I met a few nice guys at the campground but it would be more fun to go with a friend or two or three .  Maybe next year ?  :-?

I'll probably only make it to hill country this year.

You guys put a smile on my face today. Hill Country ride sounds great. I'm with MM as far as the bike goes. I'll ride the S40 there also. And staying at the campground cabin sure makes for a very affordable vacation.

MM, you know you are welcome at my house anytime.

Neal, are you willing to put up again with us for another ride? You know we love you Neal! 8-)

Well, Newsome stopped paying me to look for work...
and Brandon stopped paying my healthcare,
but I haven't stopped looking or drawing on my insurance yet.
So technically no.

I'm sorry your having a ruff time with the "Job-Hunt".    Your one of the smartest guys I know , so if your having a difficult time with it then I'd think a lot of folks would be having a ruff time finding a job.

Here in Tn. there are "Help Wanted" sign up everywhere it seems like ?

Let me know if I should start looking for a place for ya to live ?

It would be great to have a ridding buddy living close by !  :)

Versy, your engineering skills may well be transferrable to the oil patch. I really do not know how the oil business is doing at the moment but Houston would certainly be a place to look for this type of job. Be it Texas, Oklahoma, or Tennessee, at least you would be out of California!!!

I think I need to make Covid comment....hopefully this won't get this thread moved to the Tall Table.

The Omicron version of Covid is just now hitting the US.  It is highly infections and spreads incredibly easily.  The symptoms are far less severe than the Delta variety - but the infection is irritating and takes a while to go away.  Deb and I got symptoms on January 1st (we stayed home on New Years eve and don't know where we were exposed)....it will likely take 2 weeks for us to lose all the symptoms and be mostly normal again.  The inventor of the mRNA vaccines has stated that the current vaccines and boosters have no affect on Omicron, and he has even stated that those with vaccines are more easily infected with Omicron.  It is anticipated that over the next 6-8 weeks the US will have a surge of the Omicron virus.  My sister lives in northeast Ohio and they were experiencing a surge in November.....in northern Kentucky the surge has just begun.

This new wave may have an affect on our travel plans for the early spring ride.  My wife and I got Covid a week ago and we are currently recovering - so we will be fine to travel as soon as we get negative test results.

For the rest of you - this Omicron variant is something to consider.  The virus is highly contagious and it isn't impressed by your vaccination status.  The mainstream media doesn't seem to be reporting this accurately yet - it is going to spread like crazy over the next couple of months.  Chances are very high that you will get Covid in the next few months.

Sure.. I'll drag you around the hills some more.  Always a good time!  :D

I understand Dave's concern about COVID.. and being jammed in a tiny cabin if someone has it..
It is up to each of you to decide what is right for you.

I won't have to jam up with you and will respect what you are needing me to do to make you feel safe during the trip.   Except.. I will NOT were a mask inside my helmet while riding.  >:(

Standing by to ride with the Savage crowd again!  8-)

I agree, no mask in the helmet.[ch128547]

Title: Re: Events for 2022

NOT were a mask inside my helmet while riding.  Angry

;D ;D ;D

...........................

OK , I'll wear a mask in the cabin if any body needs that to happen .  :)

For my part :  I know we are all going to get it ... just because its here and we are too  ! ... I' hear its not as ruff on a body as the original Covid , so I don't see if it matters where or when I get it.
I've had all three vaccines and had the original covid too .   So , I'm not very concerned about the whole mess anymore.
From what I've seen in the world "Untill I've done all the chores the good Lord has planned out for me to do then I'll be here doing them , and when I'm done with all my chores then I'll go home and I'm OK with that too"
Mean while , I'm all for having fun - going and doing whatever I want .  ;)
I better move on to something else before I get us in hot water , I guess ?
.......................................

Hay , its only January so we got lots of time to plan things out I hope.

The first thing that comes to mind is how nice it would be to get company to ride with on the way to Kerrville.   Anybody that want to can leave a truck at my house in Southern middle Tn. and I've got two bed rooms that nobody is using right now too , three if ya count the rock house.

The ride down the trace is really a nice ride , running 50-55 on a well maintained road with not much traffic is good easy running , scenery is good too.   The campground on the South end has running water and is nice.

From there its only a big half days ride to Springman's so there's no hurry to get up and started at the crack of dawn thing , it also means a nice breakfast might be nice and relaxing too.

The new covid variant is already everywhere, there is no avoiding it, its basically airborne.  Based on its history we should see a peak within a month.  Hopefully (Prayerfully) we can be done with it then.

My daughter had a positive contact of the moron variety.
Vet came to work sick and was told to leave immediately and get tested.
Yes she had it.  Everyone was told to get tested and to minimize outside contact.
Luckily no one else tested positive.

MM - Is Marcia coming to Texas this year?

Deb is coming with me.

Last year we had our stay in the area from April 11 -17.

We are looking at a place very near where we stayed last year....about half way between Kerrville and Comfort (Center Point).

What dates work for you Youzguys,Verslagen,Lancer,Springman.....others?

From past experience, the cabins will be wide open right up the the weekend we want to be there.  I think we only had any competition the 1st and 2nd time we were there probably because it's a hit or miss on weather.

My preference is any time after tax day.

Deb and I won't be staying the cabins - so the sooner we know what days we are going to be there the more likely we are going to be able to reserve a space.  (The folks we stayed with last year don't Airbnb anymore).

Hay if we go that early in April , then we might be back home before our son gets here ?

So , here's my situation :   The AF has a program called "Skills Bridge" where departing service personnel can leave up to 6 months early to enroll in a private civilian training program .   The industry doing the training gets a trainee for free while the military continues to pay the trainee durning the training period up to 6 month.

So I don't know when or if our son will get approval from his base commander to get into the program.
If its late in April then we would be back from Texas .
If its early in April when he gets here then Marcia won't go .
But
We don't even know for sure if the base commander will approve his application yet.

I told all that to say this :   Put me down for the cabin , unless Marcia can join us , if so , then I'll get a last minute motel or separate cabin if motels are booked up or gone crazy price .
If the cabin is full (more than 4) then I can bring a cot.  ;)
......................

Anybody know what the long range weather looks like ?

Lancer , the private bathrooms are in the building close to the check-in station .   There are 4 private bathrooms with showers and wifi near the entrance to the park.   That would be a 100 yard walk from the nearest camping cabin (which is #1).   The other bath house is directly across from the cabin #1 (25-30 yard walk).

The same ones we've stayed at before ,  :)

Hay YouzGuyz , is that the same crossing you led us through the first year we made the pilgrimage to the HILL COUNTRY ?  :-?

If you remember , I was the last one across even back then  ... now that I've grown OLD and CAUTIOUS , that really looks scary !  :P

Dave , the page had turned over , so I just now saw where the scary picture came from !  ...  I hope it runs down before we get there , so your go-pro don't get scared too !

I'm not sure even a Himalayan could cross that High Water ?

Ummmm... which water crossing??  Was it paved?  Creek bed??
Any clues at all??? (Yeah.. it was ... wet!  :P )

Maybe - Creek bed the one I was thinking of with a slight right turn build into it and an uphill on the other side , but there were many the way I remember it !
We all got our wheels washed ya might say .   :)

Not that is matters , but I'll be the last across anything resembling the one Dave found .   ::)

Well ,

I got good news and bad news today !

The good news is :
Anders (my son) got  approved for his "Skills-Bridge"  thing today !   :)
That means he could be coming home in April this year instead of Oct.   Hopefully durning the first part of the month , so he can get settled in with training for a new job and all before its TEXAS TIME .

The bad news is that :
Marcia won't go anywhere for the first 6 month her baby is home after being gone for 3 years.

So ,

I might have to leave Anders to look after his mom till I get back ?   He's been home for visits twice in the last year , and calls home at least a couple time a week.   That first visit after a year in South Korea was a month long visit .  ;)

It could be May before the Skills Bridge thing starts ???  I'll know more in a week or two ?  :-?

OK.  That was probably Middle Creek Road.
Steep down hill paved, then gravel, then a right turn, go into the creek and go downstream for 20ft or so, then back out and uphill gravel, then back paved.
I'll take Thumper through there and get a video.

I don't know if I would try that with the Rocket.  It's making that turn in the creek bed that is "iffy".

Are you getting any practice with the new GPS?

"O-Yea"  ,  It's an Android System , so it's not the same as a Garmin and involves a learning curve ya might say !   :-?

I've only got two places in "Favorites" , but don't have the saving into Favorites quite figured out yet ... so far its been "push buttons till it works ???  :P

Maybe by spring I'll have it figured out   :-/
............................................................................

These Cold "Heart of Winter Days" put Marcia in the mood for a new kitchen counter top and tile walls above it .
And we had an old Squair 1960 type hot water heater in a corner under our old kitchen counter.
So
You know I hate to pay people to do things that I can do.  That would cut into my Motorcycle money.
We got a "Lazy Susan" corner to replace it.
But  You know I hate to pay people to do things that I can do
Well , that has involved "re-spacing" the under counter cabinets.  Nothing fits anymore.
As of now the new Granit Rock counter person is coming to measure tomorrow.
The old kitchen sink is out and the old counter top is on the car port.
My Kitchen don't work and won't work for at least the next two weeks .

Its to cold to ride much anyway !   ::)

Springman I'll follow you BACK to the cabin ...

I did successfully save a place into the "Favorite" section of the bike GPS today.   I'll practice on another few places before Texas time.   Once into the Favorite section all is easy.

I don't think Marcia is joining us this year ?  She thinks both of us should not take off for Texas only a month after our son get home to start the "Skills Bridge" thing - where he gets out early to train for a civilian job.   He will be home almost a month before Texas time.  Son is a very capable young man and mom is a very attentive mom.  Not to say I don't worry about him but ... he is a jet mechanic in the USAF and has spent a full tour of duty in South Korea !

So who all is in the cabin now ?
If I need to then I can bring a cot (but not the same one I did the first year we got the cabin)I fell out of that thing at least twice a night !   :)

That is great Versy. Really looking forward to this. Have had a less than pleasant day at work so far today. Really looking forward to seeing good friends and getting away from this for a week.

Good on you MM. The 712 is a good tire. I've got them both front and back now on the S40 and they do well. I will say that in my experience the 230 front tire is slightly better than the 712, but on the rear both the 712 and 230 feel about the same to me.

This year , I'm doing  thing a little different.

I've been going down the Natchez Trace and camping at the south end , then running through Texas the next day.    And if Hammer wants to/can go that is still a plan that works good.
But
Fact is : I don't feel as good about camping alone as I used too and its always better have a ridding buddy along too.

So
This year I'm going to Lancers on the first day and ridding with him on to Texas for day two.

Bandera Falls is a small community over by Pipe Creek and Bandera.  We have been through there on English Crossing road, and it does cross the Medina River.  There aren't really any .. "Falls" there.

Bandera Highway (aka 173) which is where the cabins are, is called that because you can .. well... go to Bandera on that road.

I know where some water falls are.. or what would be water falls if there was enough water.  Going to look a bit pathetic with the lack of rain.  More like a water trickle..

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by MMRanch on 03/09/22 at 06:43:33

 More like a water trickle..

I'm going along for the ride anyway but , maybe a walk-a-bout near the trickle would be good .

One of the things we rode by was a long wall with glass piled on top of it.   I had the idea that Drug money can buy things like that.    That was in a flat land area.

Have we been to the "Hill Country State Natural Area" near Tarpley yet ?

Or

The "Canyon State Natural Area" ?

The entire area has me in a Vacation State of Mind , so I'm good with all of it.  ;)

Umm .. no.  There is a road that goes through it.  It is also very .. Natural.  Made up of native texas rock.. caliche..  Sure.  Glad to take you there.  Happy Trails to You!

There might be a few places you might want to see.
Hamilton Pool
https://parks.traviscountytx.gov/parks/hamilton-pool-preserve
Requires a reservation, and charges for the reservation and for entrance.
I ain't ever been there.

Jacobs Well
https://hayscountytx.com/departments/hays-county-parks-recreation/jacobs-well-natural-area/
No fee to park and hike to the well.
Been there once.  It was cold that day if I remember right.

Where are you and your map taking us?

I followed the link and it is a house across the street from a dentist office!

I believe this Maria's Taco Express is/was a unique place in south Austin.....not a chain that can be found in other places.  The information is a bit confusing as this article states that the restaurant was purchased and closed.
https://austin.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/09-30-20-marias-taco-xpress-closing-sold-south-lamar/

While Maria's still has an operating website that claims they are open.
https://www.tacoxpress.com/about

The place looks fun - but Mapquest shows the trip from Kerrville to Maria's Taco Express is 2 hours with a lot of highway.....not sure it is worth the 4 hour round trip.

Some of the days will have me giving you a map to get yourselves back to camp as I head for home.  Of course, you can pick and chose your own way based on your mood, hunger, saddle sores, etc.

MM:

That is the one and only Maria's Taco Express - the one that is in south Austin and is a 4 hour ride there and back.

And that Google Street view photo was taken in 2018 - there is no guarantee she is still there.  You may need to make a detour on your ride down and see if she is still there.  The news article from 2020 said they were sold and would be closing.

Have you guys looked at the latest forecast for Kerrville? Do we maybe need to go a week early? Or 2 weeks early?

That second week of May sure looks good !   :)

The week of April 24th looks good too !

I'm better with a week later but am OK with what ever .

I'm retired so you "Working Folks" make the call !   :) :)

I hate riding in the rain - but is it really possible to predict the weather a month in advance? :-?

Our lodging is booked up for all the weeks prior and after our planned stay.........I am likely at a point where I can't get a refund anymore if I cancel.  We also have made arrangements for the dog and cat care while we are gone., and it is not easy to get those changed as the kennel has limited space and requires reservations far in advance.

One time back in 63 I think the weather person got it right for a two day streach !  But I wasn't old enough to remember what days it was ?  :-?

.................................

I'm good with anything as long as its not both "Wet and Cold" ,  ;)

I just sent an email out to those I have an email address for.  (Sorry Dave, don't have yours).

A rather lengthy diatribe with links to google map routes for possible rides and cryptic notes.

Last year my plastic rain paints melted on my muffler when Stew and I rode up to Bell Mountain.  I wore them on they way up as the morning ride was a bit coolish.

The replacement set I bought were Frogg Toggs with a heat resistant inner leg.  They are a lot easier to get on/off than the plastic ones as the leg zipper doesn't always get folded into the zipper - and they don't get hot and steamy inside....however they really block the wind well and can help when riding in cold weather.  They are also much quieter as the wind doesn't make them flap as much.  The only downside so far is they take up more space in the saddlebag as the plastic rain pants could be stuffed into a small sack.

Good job Versy. Definitely look in in.

OK Guys ,

Let's give this a shot !

Folks , let us pray .    Heavenly Father - we thank you for all the things you do for us - even the things we can't see at the time and we ask your forgivness for when we fail ya in doing what you need.   We ask you to help us be strong enough to do the chores you have in need of being done .  Lord when we don't have the Courage to stand up to the things you need done , we ask you give us a reminder of who we work for in a way we can understand.
Lord as we go about ridding the Texas country side we ask you to make it easy for us to stay in good humor , dry , and safe.  We also ask you to guide us to demonostrate your love for man kind in a way that that bring your will where we trod.   And Lord if you need to bring rain to the area we are in , then Lord we ask you to bring the rain at night while we are sleeping so we can praise you name for washing our bikes for us in a way that leaves us smiling.
Thank you for letting us know about you Lord
Amen .

That makes me think back to when I had a Honda CB350 and would take the 300 mile (trip) to visit my mom in NC. from TN.   Back then it seemed 300 miles was an "Epic-Adventure" , and I guess it still is ?   A six hour ride is still a long way from home !
Yep , cruising down the road at 7,000 RPM , and grinning from ear to ear !  :)
I would bet that "Back Yard Bill" and his USAF Nija 300 running up to the Dragon Central  had the same grin ?   .  ;)

And Hammer (Steve) will be grinning on that HOG too.   I'd suspect than once he introduces the Harley to the Twisted Sisters then he will be forced  expected to   marry  buy it.  ;D

Luckenbach has a band every night at 5PM (6 on Thursday).

On the 16th in Comfort, Texas the Comfort Golden Age Center is having their spring bake sale!  And on the same day the Guadalupe Gallavanters are having their Easter Walk.

I have never paid to see anyone play golf, or basketball, or soccer, or tennis - I have paid to watch a football game as I had a nephew playing and dad was out of town and asked me to go support my nephew.  I have attended those kind of sporting events when somebody offers me a free ticket.

I have paid to watch car and motorcycle races - including indoor ice races and even monster trucks!  (Deb occasionally goes with me but retaliates by making me attend a ballet with her).

I have paid to see folks play music and I will continue to do so as I really enjoy a good show - but only the ones who are worthwhile! :)

The mirrors and windscreen are removable!

I have to take the mirrors off when I load a Savage into my little trailer.....and on the F800 BMW I have to remove the windscreen.  It only takes 10-15 minutes to take it off or put it back on......not a big deal.

I like having my motorcycle in a secure place when I travel.....and it keeps it clean and dry!

Hay Dave ,

I'll have to admit that :   If the van got better mpg than my truck does then I'd be taking the mirrors off !   ;)

I did put "Bar end" mirrors on the guzzi , and they are good ! :)
................................

Funny you should bring that "Lower the Front" thing.    I did let the tubes slide up through the triple-tree about 1.5 inch on the guzzi .   It feels 50 pounds's lighter and I can turn it around ridding double now without that "overweight fixing to fall over feeling now.  It might have lost a touch of ground clearence but thats OK because its more drivable now.
I haven't thought of checking to see if it fits in the van (in its shorter form).   :-/

I'm bring the Savage to Texas this trip.   I wonder if it would benifit from being lowered a bit  ... ?   :-?    I don't drag foot pegs like I used to anymore , now its what ever is easier to handle.

I just heard from Steve a few minutes ago. He said he did pickup his new to him bike yesterday and will be heading this way on Friday. He had originally indicated that he was going to trailer the bike, but I don't know if that is still his plan on the newer bike.

I will be bringing the S40 also in the spirit of tradition of the Savage Hill Country ride. So I suspect it will be 5 Savages, 1 BMW and 1 HD. Should be fun.

We do definitely need to go to Luckenbach again. They had the live music last time and we did not have to pay for it. I really do not remember much about the eateries there as I think we all just got a soda.

Looking forward to seeing ya'll.

Thursday they have a Cowboy/Western Swing music jam from 7-10.

The current ride schedule has me leaving you on your own in Luckenbach on Wednesday.  And I offered up 3 routes to take you back to Kerrville from there.

Luckenbach does NOT have a "restaurant".  It has a kind of snack bar with a few things to munch on:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g56209-d12607490-Reviews-Luckenbach_Feed_Lot-Luckenbach_Texas.html
I ate there.. once.  Years ago.  Maybe it is better now?

Remember, Luckenbach is a tourist trap.  I call it "The Land of the Five Dollar Beer".  might be more now..
But.. you ARE tourists!!!  :D

So we might be " pickanickning " ,  8-)

I keep a space behind my windshield to carry a grocery bag in , and a cup-holder to boot.   My hard saddlebags allways have a little extra room too if I need a hot meal (or three)  to stay warm .

YouzGuyz , you and Dave sure are good about finding neat little places to visit !  :)

Have visited Luckenbach numerous times in the past but have never eaten at the Feed Lot. Did so last week on a visit there. One of the BEST ole fashioned hamburgers I have ever had. And the curly fries were better than potato chips! The brisket sandwich was also very tasty. Will be grabbing lunch here anytime I visit

The weather forecast has improved a bit....as the morning temperatures have gone up from the low 40's to low 50's on Monday and Tuesday.  I think using your raingear to keep the wind at bay in the morning will be adequate to get us to the warmer hours......the morning could be a bit nippy.

The ride in on Sunday could be a bit sweltering for you guys on bikes.  At 91 degrees I am glad Deb and I will be arriving in her car with the air conditioner working!

Isn't it nice having a "fleet" of motorcycles to ride!  You can just pick an alternate bike to lead a group of "misfit toys" around your neighborhood.

How many miles does that stator have on it?

42,800 on this one.
This is the 3rd one to go bad.   All went bad the same way, short to ground.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 04/15/22 at 19:04:30

I packed my tool box....it has most the tools you need to fix a Savage as long as it doesn't require honing a cylinder!

Our drive was good today and we made pretty good time and the weather was dry and the headwinds tolerable.  Deb and I got to the north side of Little Rock and stopped for the night - once you leave this area the hotels get scarce for a while.

When we got to the hotel and turned on the news there was a tornado that touched down about an hour north of here.....glad we were able to get south of there before that weather arrived.

We did see 3 bad accidents on Route 40.  One was in the other lane and not sure what it was - one was an older Ford Explorer that had rolled mulitple times in the grass median and threw the contents of the interior all over the grass.  The SUV was on it's top with all 4 wheels pointing up, and the eastbound lane was blocked and the medics were loading the driver up on a stretcher.  The other accident was a semi that had gone off the left side of the road and ripped all the suspension off the front end.  It was weird to see all three of these accidents in a 40 mile stretch.

I may be the only reporter on this trip.....as I don't believe the fellows staying In the campground have any internet access.

Yesterday youzguys led the group on a ride to Leaky and we rode the Twisted Sisters.  Riding in Texas is a bit different, as the 2 lane local roads can have speed limits up to 75mph!
The day started out with temps in the low 60's and it warmed up quickly - later in the day we got up to the high 80's.

Our breakfast stop where we met had the roof blown off in a storm the previous afternoon - so we rode on to Leaky and had breakfast Taco's at LaLa's.   After the ride on the sisters we had a hamburger at the Bent Rim grill.  We rode a total of 231 miles on Monday......it as a good day!

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 04/19/22 at 17:12:36

Youzguys did a great job of leading us around today.  We met in Kendalia and then headed out on a lot of back roads to see the open range ranches and a lot of cattle guards and low water crossings.  The ride started out sunny but by 9:30 the clouds had taken over and the temperature was a bit cooler than yesterday.  We skipped having a formal breakfast and we ate brownies from the Kendalia General Store.

The roads wandered around the creeks and rivers.   The rivers and streams all have dams erected frequently to hold the water and keep it from just washing downstream and being gone forever.  This keeps the water available for the ranchers and their livestock.  There was a forecast for evening rain so we went home a bit...I think it was around 4PM when we turned for home.  Deb and I saw cars with the wipers on as we got near comfort - but we made it home dry.  The other fellows made it to the Kerrville campground dry - but youzguyz got wet on his way home.  It did rain lightly overnight but the rain was gone and the roads mostly dry by the morning.  We rode 178 miles today.

On Wednesday we met at a gas station in Comfort, Texas...….youzguyz rode his massive Triumph Rocket 3.  The rest of us followed behind him and experienced the wake turbulence from this massive 2.5 liter motor with a 240mm wide rear tire!

We spent the day riding around the area north and northeast of Fredericksburg and stopped for lunch in Llano and had great BBQ.  Springman did his best impression of Jethro Bodine and put away a massive amount of Pork, Sausage and Brisket!

The last day's ride is done.  It has been a GOOD week!  The weather cooperated.. for the most part.  I was the only one who got soaked, and that was on the ride home one of the days.   Could have used a bit less wind.. but it felt good when sitting on the verandas of various establishments.
It is really nice to talk to people so you can put faces and personalities with names.  If you ever get a chance to ride with people on the forum.. do it!  It is FUN!

Here is a link to the pictures I took.  I may caption a few for clarity.. or confusion.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 04/22/22 at 20:01:03

Yep, it was a blast.

The mileage total for Thursday was around 131.....we stopped and yacked a lot.

The mileage total for Friday was 178.

The total trip mileage was 918 for Deb and I...….youzguys most likely traveled a lot more as he had a long commute both ways!  (NOTE:  The math may not work out exactly if you add up the individual days.....I posted the daily mileage as best I could remember what my trip odometer said at the end of the day).

The wildflowers were a bit scarce this year......this area is very dry and the fields were very brown in most areas.  Youzguys took us to  Medina Lake and has only 22% of the capacity.....the water level was far from what is the shoreline when the reservoir is full.

Traffic on the roads that youzguys took us is pretty light, and very often cars and trucks pull over and let us pass when they see us behind them.  The speed limits on the rural 2 lane roads can often be 70mph, and that takes a bit of getting used to when the same roads in Kentucky would have a 55mph limit.

We are all packing up and headed home tomorrow.....although Springman and his brother in law Steve were considering leaving tonight so they could beat the rain that is forecast for tomorrow morning.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 04/24/22 at 18:31:18

Deb and I just got home.  We left around 9:30 Saturday morning and stopped for the night just past Little Rock, Arkansas about 9PM.  Traffic around Austin and on up to Dallas was incredibly busy on a Saturday morning and we had several places of slow going.

We left the hotel this morning around 8AM and traffic was better until we got to the north side of Nashville - there was a long backup and we were able to take an exit and take a half hour detour around the problem.  We got home at 6PM....the data in the car said we traveled 1,278 miles in a bit less than 21 hours.....that is a 60mph average which isn't bad considering the slow areas.  (The driving time only includes the time the car was running....and none of the fuel or food stops......we had to get fuel every 200 miles so we had 6 fuel stops).

The riding and fellowship were great!

One "non-ride" event that Deb and I discovered was some of the history of the Texas Rangers.  There was a PBS documentary on a DVD.http://www.lovingtruthbooks.com/V2/Res.aspx?xr=t&Sku=2188

Deb and I were staying in Center point and the cemetery has more Texas Rangers buried there than anywhere else.  The documentary told amazing stories of the lawmen, and how they would often take on a foe who outnumbered by huge odds....and come out the victors.  They did point out that they methods they used would not be deemed acceptable by the standards of today - but it was the "Wild West" and the rangers had to resort to tough tactics if they wanted to survive and create order and protect the law abiding citizen.

We also learned about the US trying out Camels as pack animals just before the Civil War.  The outpost/fort was called Camp Verde and it was just a few miles from Center Point.

Thanks all. It was a tremendous week. I hope we continue to do this well into our 80's + if God will allow us.

Steve and I did leave Friday night as the weather was absolutely delicious that night and Steve was scared of being held up by the possible morning rain. We made it to my house just before 3 am and I am sure we both quickly fell asleep. Thanks to my wife for being understanding when we woke her up upon arriving.

Steve should be home by now and I will probably give him a call tomorrow to see how his trip went.

Got home yesterday about 21:00hrs.    I needed to stop and walk-a-bit about 1/2 way , so I went by the Bass Pro Shop in Memphis (the big one by the Arkansas bridge).
It has the Aquarum in the floor and boat dock walks through/on top of it.    There are some BIG fish swimming around in it too !  The bigger one is about 4-4.5 foot long.  For comparison that trash can on the shore line is the 2'x2' comercial size .

I wanted to stop at the Bass Pro Shops pyramid.....but we just could not take the time going either way.

Next year I will be fully retired and we can take some extra stops along the way....and we are likely to take time to go see Big Bend - while there is still some water in the Rio Grande River!

I think it is a place that you would be done riding in a day or two.....Deb would want to spend time off the bike hiking!

Going there would increase my 21 hour drive to nearly 30!  It is likely that the trip would be broken down to several days of commute with fun stops along the way.

It runs 50 and 60 like the Savage did , 74 has an electrical governor comes in.    But Its averaging 80-90 mpg. so I can live with 55-65 mph.  There also the 250-300 mile cruise range  .    8-)

Gettin some killer fuel mileage. Good choice.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by MMRanch on 08/29/22 at 12:37:22

Hi Ruttly

I've run up 2600+ miles on it already , Its like a smooth Savage .   72mm piston , 86mm stroke , two valves/cylinder , nice counter weight and such a heavy flywheel that it does 4 compression strokes after its cut off , from an idle.

Its SOO SMOOTH ,

Its also a little heaver than the Savage , but sits and handles the same

Not having Super-Slab speed is the only thing missing.   But I live 40 miles from the interstate so I don't miss it.  6100 rpm is max power , about 80mph , so one could hold it wide open against the speed limiter OK .   That great fuel millage comes while doing back roads at 45-55mph.    :'(  :)

I've still got the Guzzi if I need an Interstate machine .   The Savage taught me how important the "Cruise-Range" is when switching bikes.   Last time I had a bike that got over 90mpg , it was a Honda CD175.   And I was 18 years old.

I believe those dates would work for me.

I will do a little route and lodging exploring - maybe I can find a place we can meet on the way to the Rattler and ride it together, then head over to Mo's to stay the next few days and ride over to the Devils Triangle.

magnet requires luck and persistence to get past the things that are magnetic.

I would try putting the engine on the side and pumping oil thru to flush it out.

but I think, once it's on the bottom not much is going to get it off other than an evil Knievel jump.

It is on its side and being flushed periodically and probed with a magnet where possible.  No luck yet.

:-?

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by LANCER on 08/31/22 at 17:25:57

Well, let’s see.
Had an oil leak so removed the engine to fix that, and to swap the piston as long as it was apart.  When reassembling I had a right side cover bolt cross thread, so I pull the cover to address this issue and during that the washer on the bolt just slips right off and goes “tink tink” and disappears down an open hole.  It has not been seen since.  [ch128533]

Flushed with 1/2 qt. Oil; no joy.
Wonder if it just faked me out and split when my attention was diverted ?
I’m about ready to put it back together and go with it.

Hay Lancer

Maybe ...  The magnet on the other has already found it ???  :-?

Truth is , I've never seen what's behind the flywheel

So , a washer between the flywheel and the stator ... could not be good ??  :(

But

If its not hanging off the rotor , then I'd go with it !   :)

Next Monday is my day to take the Bike for a "THREE DAY RIDE" .

So , Dave

If I leave my house at 9am , I would be in the Dragon neighborhood about 13:00-13:30 hrs.
I can bring the 8'x10'x6' tent , I'll set it up this week to make sure its still alright.   I'll give it another spray of camp-dry while I've got it up.

How does your plan look ?

MM:

I won't be able to leave on the 12th....I will just be driving home from an old time music festival with Deb.  We will be driving home on the 12th.

I could leave on Wednesday the 14th and play the rest of the week and even into the weekend.....or I could go the next week.

Next week the  10th-16th (full moon of Sept.) is the same moon cycle as the Arkansas trip last year ... I was out of town and didn't write it on my calendar but I seem to remember the weather being nice.

My weather forecast for the week of Sept 19-22 is Sunny days with light cloud cover and Rain moving in Friday (23rd).   Based on the last two years of moon cycles (shrinking moon of Sept.)

So Thursday (22nd) is my day to ride home.    If we go the next week ?

I'm ok with either ?

:-?

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 09/07/22 at 04:34:26

OK.....the week of 19-22 looks like a plan.

We can watch the weather and confirm......I can leave with short notice on Wednesday the 14th if it looks like the weather is perfect and better than the following week.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by MMRanch on 09/07/22 at 08:50:13

OK ,

I'll set-up my 8'x10'x6' tent today just to make sure all is well with it.

You ridding the BMW or bring the trailer ?

..........................

So

If the weather forecast is for dry weather the evening of the 12th then I'll leave the morning of the 13th and head for Moe's and set-up camp.
If the forecast is not good for the rest of the week then plan "B" .

The Sept. and Oct. full moons of 2020 were both Dry .
Full moon starts the 10th (this Saturday) 2022.

The warmer the nights the better I'll do.    But the week of the 19th is OK too if its better for you .

I'll still go check-out the tent today.

Hay Dave ,

The weather for Stagecoach is looking good for this week.    Its a little cooler than I'd like .    I'm thinking we almost waited to late in the year for a mountain trip (45 deg. nights and 70deg. days).
But
Unless the forecast changes  ,  I could leave Wednesday Morning .    I'll check the Stagecoach campground to make sure I have a camping spot before I leave.

Title: Re: Events for 2022

Hay Dave ,

If I meet ya in Wartburg , TN. (DIDDIE'S MARKET) then we could ride the
Devils Triangle on the way to Stagecoach NC.  ?

Wartburg is where TN. 62 starts toward the Triangle (NW of Knoxville).    Its only a little over three hours for me.

Add an hour and a half for looping the triangle

And then another 3+ hours to Stagecoach.   So an 8 hour ride day is good for me .   :)

Have you seen the weather for the week of the 19-22 ?
..........................

I have to be home Sunday afternoon the 18th , and Saturday morning the 24th.

Mike:

I am camping with with Deb and will be home this afternoon, and I can look at the routes today. Since the weather is so dry I will likely trailer thee Savage down - which will also provide me with a place to sleep.

Are we staying at MO’s?  Her place is called the Kickstand Lodge - it is in Stecoah, NC.

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by MMRanch on 09/12/22 at 06:43:30

I'll call Moe to make sure we can plan to stay at her place after 10:00 hrs.   If not there is always the Dragon campground.

If your bring the trailer then I'll bring my little umbrella tent instead of the 8'x10' .     I'm sure two people snoring in the same tent is an terrible  sound  that no-one should have to hear !  ;D  ... unless necessary.

Yea , if the weather is warmer the 19th-23rd week , then good.   Those cool night don't agree with me as good as they used to .  :).

Mike;

It appears that the overnight temperatures next week are only warmer on Mon/Tue - but not not much warmer the other days.....and that is subject to change over the next week (could be better or worse).

If the overnight temps are scary - we could camp in the area with electric hookup and I can bring a small heater and extension cord for you to use.  You could stay in the bunkhouse, we could get a cabin, or a heated room at the Two Wheel Inn is about $100 a night and it has heat, a bath and a garage that will hold two bikes.

I believe the better weather gamble is to go this week rather than gamble on next week being warmer and dry.

I will have my car there and we could drive to Robbinsville for breakfast and start riding once the temperatures come up and the fog burns off.

If you want to go on Wednesday I can drive down Tuesday night and then ride the Savage and meet you in Wartburg on Wednesday.

Dave

"DIDDIE'S MARKET" in Wartburg , Tn. ?

I called the Kickstand but didn't get an answer so I left a message .   Don't know what that means ?    Maybe I should call Deal's gap to see if they still do camping ?    Hay Dave , your getting there first so - I'm good with what ever you can fix-up .  8-)

If your bring the trailer to sleep in then I'll bring my little easy tent and and a heavier sleeping bag , but thanks for the heater anyway.

It make the trip more fun if it don't cost more than necessary , so I'm good with camping.

So , I'll plan on leaving Wednesday morning.   Google says its 3.5 hours to Wartburg , and its about 3+ hours from Stagecoach too , so if we both leave at ??? ... 09:30 ... ???  :-?     Aiming at 12:30-13:00 Wednesday at "DIDDIE'S MARKET"  ?    Then on to the "Devil's Triangle" !  :)

MM:

Don't worry about them not answering the telephone at Kickstand - they don't sit by the phone and wait for calls.  Deals Gap does not take camping reservations and you just show up.....so if Kickstand is closed I will get us a spot at Deals Gap (and there are other camping spots around).

I will be leaving this afternoon and camp overnight, then on Wednesday morning I will leave on the Savage to meet you in Wartburg at Diddie's Market.

Mike and I found each other at Diddie's Market.  It was a local convenient store that was popular with the local workers for grabbing lunch.  They did not have any place to sit - so we elected to get on 116 and start riding the Devils Triangle - there was a restaurant on the route and we ate there.  All of the other markets/stores on the route were closed as it is now off season and a weekday.

The Devil's Triangle was a nice curvy road with very little traffic when we were there.  The route is not well marked and when we got to 62 and needed to head east to get home we didn't see any route signs until we had ridden through town and got to a large intersection.....then we discovered we had to turn around to head back to the Dragon.  Most of the ride home was nice.  Lenoir has a frustrating traffic light phasing where you sit at a red light and when it turns green - the following one turns red and you have to stop at every intersection......that makes the trip really slow through town.

The days are comfortable riding - the nights are a bit chilly.  I did discover the bath house has a washer and drier that are free and positioned near the shower - I can throw my towel in the drier while I shower and then get a nice hot towel after my shower!

Today we will go wherever Mike want to ride.  His little Royal Enfield Meteor has no problem keeping up a brisk pace even when loaded down with gear.

Yesterday a motorcycle police officer pulled up beside me - and flashed me and my Savage Cafe' a "Thumbs Up" and said "Sweet"!  Mike said I was going a bit over the speed limit at the time........but I was pulling away from a big intersection where we were in a merge lane and I had sped up to make sure I could merge safely.  The officer didn't seem concerned about it.

There are some really nice officers out there.  A friend and I had an off chance opportunity a few years ago to meet a county officer, a Marine veteran and a rider himself.  It was on Hwy 62 about an hour west of here.  We talked about 10 minutes about bikes and military, and when we all began to leave he KINDLY reminded us to ride SAFELY.
Gods Grace.

Lancer:

Yep - Yesterday Mike and I were at a gas station in Murphy l00king at a map to find the most fun way to get to Hiawasee, and an office stopped and gave us directions to get to the routes we needed.

When riding around this area it is a bit sad to see the shops and restaurants that have closed down in the past few years.  The small mom and pop stores are still having trouble.  Several shop owners that I have talked to say business is still down, and when winter comes and the tourists leave it will be worse.  I don't know if Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have been affected as much as these rural areas.

Yesterday we rode from Deals Gap down to Fontana Village and took the back rode called Fontana Heights over to 129.  It is a really twisty and fun road that has to be ridden a bit slower than the Dragon as the corners are tighter.  We then rode 129 south and went to Hiawasee and up Bell Mountain for the view.  We then rode over to Clayton and took Warwoman over to 28, then rode north on 28 home.  The last 10 miles along the lake was done just as it was getting dark - and the part of the trip along the lake was really buggy!  (Now I know why most of the folks get back to Deals Gap before dark).

I made it home before dark yesterday and a little to my surprise on the same tank of fuel I left the Dragon with.   The fuel light came on two towns away from home (40 miles) and it know there is about 1 gallon left at that point so I just went on.  :)     But , I'll have to get fuel first thing today , the way I understand it ... The fuel pump needs fuel covering it to keep it cool .

I took pictures almost ever time we stopped with the idea to put together a story line when I get them all into my computer ... so maybe tonight i can get them blue toothed over ?   Last night I was working on it and when I got to a picture looking off Bell Mountain they quit being accepted by the computer ???   I'll try again tonight.

All is well from my point of view.   ;)

On roads like these the seventy two mm long stroke piston is just as good as any size .

I'll bring the Guzzi next time on these "Mountain Trips" , those long high speed steep roads need more CC's .

We (me) saw a new place this trip.  Dave had already seen it , but It's QUITE A SIGHT"  There is a marker and a view , two pictures .

We ( me)  wasn't through for the day so I didn't want to climb the stairs to the top .    Yep , there was more ,  here's a snap shot of the part we didn't do.   From up there the other side of the mountain is visible.  :)

I didn't take a picture of the road going up AND down Bell Mountain.   If ya ever get to ride up it you'll see why there ain't no picture of it.   Its a 1.2 lane twisty up (or down) broken blacktop.   We meet a truck coming down as we were exiting one of the switch backs ... it was one of the EXICITING PARTS !!!

Does Deals Gap own both sides now ?
Seems like years ago when the outer side was first built it was a different company.

They have different prices and different stuff , so I'm thinking different folks.

There were so many people buying  Dragon fuel while we were trying to get a few stickers -  that me and Dave walked across the road.

The bathhouse and campground still looks the same .    Dave got the parking space closest to the tent area.    But the long walk up to the bath house hasn't got any shorter , so I rode my bike up to it the first night (spinning all the way)  and had to come down the black top road to get back down.

Title: Re: Events for 2022

There were a few tents , but not crowded at all .

Title: Re: Events for 2022
Post by Dave on 09/29/22 at 03:47:39

We picked a good time to go to ride the Dragon and surrounding roads.

The night temperatures are in the 30's and 40's now - it is currently 36 degrees in Robbinsville as I type this message at 6:42AM from the comfort of my warm home.

Daytime temps are in the 60's and low 70's.....and rain is forecast for the next 3 days with dry weather to follow.

With October just 1 day away and our morning temperatures being in the 40's or 50's it is obvious that winter is coming (we had one 36 degree night last week).  I believe my riding will be limited to local rides on nice afternoons - I generally can get some nice cool weather riding in October and November.
