Title: throw over saddlebags
Post by TZK on 11/28/21 at 05:49:08

I just bought a set of these saddlebags.

Very good quality for not a lot of money.  Anyway, I was planning to install them under the seat but only now do I realize that the regulator/rectifier sits right where the yoke should be placed.  I'm concerned about heat from the reg/rec damaging the yoke if it's placed on top of it.  What do you think? Am I worrying unnecessarily?

You're very right, you can very easily relocate the rr

BTW- whats gonna stop these saddle bags from getting caught in the rear wheel?

Is there a thread detailing how/where to relocate the rr?

The bags have stiff plastic inside to help retain their shape.  They also come with rope to prevent them from flapping.  I think it'll be fine.  If not, I'll have to figure something out.

I too was wondering about the voltage regulator location under the seat, and how to get saddle bags on.  I was thinking of not using throw over bags, but something that mounts to a rack maybe?

You can always add a little ballast if they start to sail on you.

Throw over bags can also be mounted above the seat.  But it doesn't look as nice and won't be as comfortable for the passenger.

Some riders have re-located the voltage regulator when modifying the seat or fender.  If you remove the seat you can get a better idea of how long the wire leads are and where to remount the regulator.  (I searched but wasn't able to find a discussion on regulator relocate)

Others have also just cut an opening in the saddlebag yoke that fits over the RR.

I didn't like the fit on mine. I didn't want to relocate the rr. I went to the store and got grommets, cut the bags apart, and laced them together with paracord. I was able to adjust the bags to the height and angle I wanted. They stayed right where I wanted them until that woman turned left across me. Then a bag got ripped off, but the back stayed! Just lost everything In the bag.. People picked it all up and took it home.. Grrr!

I just got used willie &max bag too. First I thought about cutting middle part and slide top of RECTIFIER then change mind. I installed under the RECTIFIER using longer bolt. My only concern is overheating for RECTIFIER. Anyone see this as problem please let me know. Thanks you.

That looks like a problem to me.  I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks

ATM I have them thrown over the passenger seat. I don't really care for the look but it'll do for now.

BTW I also installed these support brackets. They went on easily.

I got grommets and a setting tool. From hobby lobby.
Cut the strap between the bags, folded it to double it. Used parachute cord to lace them up. Holes drilled in the back, cord to the brackets.  They didn't flop around and hung right where I wanted and didn't get in the way of the rectumfrier.

Gotta seal the holes in the back. Unless you like water in your bags.

And?

Here's a photo of my throw over Willie & Max saddlebags.  It would look a lot better without that big "X" in the middle but then it would be a lot harder to adjust the height of the bags.
