Just saw a story how de Blasio, the outgoing democratic liberal communist mayor of New York City, is canceling the gifted student program in New York because as he says the demographics of these classes don’t match the demographics of the New York City school population as a whole. How ridiculous. This is liberalism personified. Rather than allow gifted students to succeed and advance, they must be brought down to avoid even the appearance of fabricated racism charges. Communist scum. We really do need an actual insurrection. A real one. |

It is being reformed/replaced, and part of that is the suspension of programs, so I would say it is suspended more than cancelled. One of the reforms seems reasonable to me: "Instead of the admissions exam, the city will evaluate all rising third graders, using past work and input from their teachers, to determine whether they need higher-level instruction in specific subject areas, for one or two periods a day." |

Saying a 45 minute book to read is replacing the Program sounds worse than saying 3rd graders will be evaluated in a different way for the Program. Why claim that the evaluation reform is actually the Program? Just like saying cancelled sounds worse than restructured. If my taxes were cancelled I would be in a much different position than if they are evaluated and reformed. |

I was under the impression the schools were being temporarily closed and reform options are open for public comment. Versus eliminating, or cancelling, which to me, means they aren't being funded, evaluated, modified or otherwise allowed to continue. |

Just look at the Firearms Safety Training Test 30 years ago, vs the one today. Just look at a car driver license test 40 year ago, compared to now. Just look at a HD/Collage text book from 50 years ago, on the same subject today. Just watch and see what happens. The schools that rewarded hard work and intelligence. Definitely a major restructuring, and most likely not very efficient. I am not however one of those if it's not broke don't fix it types as I feel any program, especially large scale, needs to update with the environment around it. I will sit down with a personal advisory board, half chosen by other people, every two years to help evaluate my decisions in life. |

Rather than addressed the uncomfortable questions as to why the test scores of black and Hispanic children on early age performance tests don’t warrant selecting them for gifted programs as often as Asian and white students, you would rather change the program so you’re not forced to face this. Essentially, you would sacrifice a future Einstein on the mantle of what we’re calling nowadays: equity. If we look at this numerically, this change ensures that instead of two or three “10”s, instead we produce a few “7”s, a couple “6”s, a big group of “5” and “3”s. Eegore, what exactly does “not as efficient” mean in a practical sense. It means we lose a potential benefit of a gifted student having concentrated education opportunities and the value they brings to society over the years. You people are screwed up. |

All I am saying is if someone tells me a program is cancelled, or eliminated I expect that program to not exist. In this case the program exists, just poorly. That test identifies exceptional ones who are more likely to understand complicated material at an early age and they are moved to an appropriate level of education. Otherwise they languish with average students. They are not average. Don’t treat them that way. Celebrate exceptionalism. |
