Title: Starting Not!
Post by Matchless G11 on 09/11/21 at 03:21:56

My ryca was having a hot start problem. No click, no starter.
I could start the bike by shorting the solenoid.
Starter is ok.
Now it wont start  cold either , unless I short the solenoid.
I have swapped from the parts bike solenoid, handlebar switch, and several relays. no solution.

Can anybody give me a link to the thread that covers this?
(I know this has been covered before.)

Check your side stand and clutch safety mods too make sure the connections haven’t come loose.

Thanks Gary

Do you know if the switches are normally open or normally closed to allow the starter to work?

They clutch and sidestand safety switches must be "closed" for the starter to function..........to bypass them (temporarily or permanently) you just need to connect the wires together.

If I remember correctly the sidestand switch doesn't keep the bike from starting when it fails - when it fails the bike shuts off whenever the bike is not in neutral. (Engine dies when you click the bike into gear).

Thanks Dave,
That (clutch switch) was the problem.

I did not build  the bike so I would have take a different approach to that item.

Got to now fix the clutch slipping and put it up for sale.

The clutch and sidestand safety switches are gone on my bike - I don't want them to fail when I am miles from home.

For me the absence of those switches isn't an less safe - as those safety devices didn't exist when I started riding and I got used to starting a bike without them.

My routine is to get on the bike and pull it upright, fold up the sidestand, turn on the fuel, set the choke, turn on the key and look for the neutral light, pull in the clutch and hit the starter button.

When the engine starts I slowly release the clutch lever, turn off the choke, and within 30 seconds I ride off and go easy on the throttle for a few minutes as the engine and tires warm up.

If that becomes routine for you - you don't need safety switches. ;)
