I am not a fan of loud mufflers.......or the neighbors who use them.

Recently a neighbor of ours bought a sport bike and within a week pulled the muffler off and installed a small piece of chrome muffler tip where the muffler used to be.  The bike was a bit cold blooded and he had to start the bike up and warm it up for a few minutes before he could ride off - and if that wasn't bad enough it was so loud that you could still hear him as he got on the highway 2 miles away (it is in the country and the sound travels easily down the valley).

"ALL" of the neighbors were upset that this fellow was so inconsiderate of the community.  Not everyone works the "day shift" - so anytime of the day you are likely to be waking somebody up with your loud bike.  The only good news is that for some reason he has not ridden the bike for several weeks - it is really nice to have the peaceful country community that we had before this fellow got his motorcycle.

Loud pipes are not making you any friends....and it creates a negative attitude toward "all" motorcycle riders.

I agree with Dave that loud pipes in neighborhoods generally upset people, and that agitation is not directed exclusively to the few guys with loud pipes waking people up, but any motorcyclist they see from then on.

A fine upgrade indeed
My muffler is relatively quiet and my neighbors still hate me ,  ;D ;D ;D ;D
Not my problem they bought a house on my test track !

The Dyna makes all the noise I need. I'd prefer a 'megaphone' look, but don't want to end up with something I hate. Why aren't aftermarket mufflers rated by noise level?
Wouldn't take more than a week for some agency to do a study, 'ballpark' style.
Cheers!  8-)

Loud pipes annoy wifes.

I prefer quieter pipes than the ones I have on the Honda and I was actually going to make them quieter. But regardless of what anybody says, my experience here in Houston has been that loud pipes are a safety feature. If I did not ride to work in the Houston traffic I probably would not have such loud pipes. And these just happen to be the pipes that came on my bike when I bought it.

The pipe on the S40 is much more to my liking. It is an HD pipe. Louder than original but not particularly loud.

for 2 years i left the stock muffler on this bike. i live in a very diverse apartment complex. in the course of the last 2 years i have been waken at 3 am due to drunks coming home in either their loud diesel trucks or their little tuner buzz bombs. so putting the muffler on is a little payback for them.
i put about 450 miles on the bike over the weekend and it is probably the best upgrade that you can do for these bikes. the throttle response it instant. between the carb and the exhaust it no longer seems to struggle to maintain 85mph.
2 more upgrades happening shortly. cam chain tensioner/head plug and 6 inch forward controls. once the S40 is done then its time for the 1200 Madura to get some needed tlc.

I love the sound of my Dyna muffler but prefer the look of stock. The Dyna just looks too short.

How does the carb perform? His carbs seem...pricey?

the carb works great. it might seem pricey but after fooling with setting up dual mikunis on my kz400, the price isnt bad. i probly spent 6 hours and another $100 over the base cost of the carbs. The murry carb came with everything. i took my time and installed it and other tan setting the idle, i havent touched it. im relocating the battery and plan on trying out a silicone elbow for the air filter, to get it out of the frame.

this ones next on the repair list. clutch was acting funny and found out the hydraulic clutch line was leaking internally. nothing is easy on the Madura but 1200cc"s of v4 engine is a blast to ride, especially in the mountains

all dressed up for Patriot Guard funeral escort duty. I had to take the S40 to Arlington National Cemetery on a mission which prompted buying the forward controls. about a 250 mile round trip and in the rain on the way home. the 1200 would have made life easier but she was fighting me every step of the way bleeding the clutch line.
now that both Suzuki's are running, its time to get back to working on my hardtail springer...kz400
