Title: Mystery Right Side Crank Case Cover Spring
Post by Ferris on 08/10/21 at 16:49:29

Hey All,
I removed the engine covers to get them powder coated for my custom build and I noticed a long spring popped out when I removed the rubber grommet that goes to the oil filter, pictures below.

I can't seem to find any documentation on it in the Clymer or on diagrams, can anyone tell me what it does and how to put it back when I get my case back?

Thanks!

As far as I know, that doesn't belong in the engine.
There should be a compression spring between the cover and the filter.

Thanks for the reply Verslagen.

To clarify, the spring came out out the inside of the crank case on the other side of the oil filter. Inside the crank case cover, there is a rubber grommet, when I removed it the spring flew out and I have no idea where it came from.

Posted another picture to clarify what grommet and location of the case I am talking about!

Mystery solved! Thank you Ohiomoto, what exactly does the spring do?

Do I need a new one based on the condition of mine or can I reuse?

The spring keeps tension on the seal to help the seal seal.  :)

The seal should be replaced.

Makes sense. Do you have the part number for the item?
Does the spring come with the seal?

Go to partzilla or some other OEM realtailer and look for it online based on year of your bike.  Probably located on the clutch cover or crank case diagram.

Or got to your dealer.......Hopefully you will have better luck than I have had getting Suzuki parts.  The Covid pandemic has made it very difficult to get some factory parts.  It took me several months to get a decompression shaft seal for the Savage from Suzuki.

If you can find somebody on eBay with the part....it might be faster than trying to get it from Suzuki.

Not all seals are specialized , most can be bought at bearing supplier. Just bring them the old seal or part number on the seal. Unlike most jap bikes I haven’t found a aftermarket seal kit for the Savage. That makes you buy all the seals individually , a real pia ! But as engines go the Savage doesn’t have a lot of seals. On the interweb

+1 on the local bearing and seal supplier.  They can match just about anything.
