Title: Any SC/NC/GA Members?
Post by SCS40 on 06/22/21 at 18:50:03

Being in upstate SC, and next door to WNC, not too far from GA, there are tons of beautiful rides. I'm curious if there is anyone nearby up for an occasional jaunt.

I'm glad you asked that question !  :)

How far are you from Suches Ga. ?

My app says 125 miles. That looks to be below Helen, which I love. Touristy, but I still love it. A Facebook group made a run there last weekend. I couldn't make it bc of my daughter's MSF course. North GA is beautiful btw.

I’d love to and just got new shoes for Stellinor. However, I’m still battling the annoying surging and the new petcock isn’t due until Monday. And I’m not absolutely positive the petcock will cure it. I putt around locally but better stay closer until I sort it out. Hopefully the petcock is the answer.

My apologies guys ...  :-[

I thought everyone knew without asking , that EVERYBODY is always invited .   :)

I'll have to bring the Guzzi to this one , and that's alright ... it's part of the good thing of having multiple bikes .   8-)     The thing I can't do right now is go to a Honda Rally !    ;D
Unless ,    I'm with somebody on a Honda ???   :-?

Dave, who is this MMRanch guy scheduling rogue trips on our forum?  Have we been hacked? Do we need to suspend his account???

Since there seem to be a few of us in the general area, and/or willing to travel, perhaps we can plan something in the future? The Blue Ridge Parkway? Helen, GA? Something else?

Once I get this darned surge sorted out, I'm pretty open.

If it was my bike - the replacement petcock and a good carb cleaning would be where I would start.....along with re-jetting to a #50 pilot, #150 main, and replace the white spacer on the slide needle with 3 machine screw washers.

I am not a believer in Seafoam or other carb cleaners to remedy poor running issues - however they may be beneficial in helping to prevent problems.

You may well turn out right on the carb clean, etc. Had I not been an idiot (and in a rush) and previously replaced the petcock bolts with the correct ones after changing the plug, I'd completely agree and was thinking that way before my blunder.

But...although the petcock soon started leaking...the bike ran like a scalded dawg. Seriously. No surge. Started both cold and hot with merely a bump of the button. Smooth idle. Plenty of power. Truly amazing compared to my 10 mile test ride.

Until the very next day, when I corrected my mistake and used the proper bolts, cleaned the surface a bit, and gave the darned thing a good seal. Fixed the fuel leak, but the hard start, surge, wavering idle, et all returned immediately.

BTW I've cancelled one petcock as it wasn't expected to arrive until August. The one coming now is due sometime next week. I even looked at overnighting one but delivery is still expected in 4-5 days. Bah! I may look at doing the mod mentioned to the stock unit just to get it running.

Yes Stew ,   ::)

Your always invited too ,    ;D

Better yet Stew , if your at Suches Saturday morning ... I'll buy ya breakfast .    Notice I didn't make that offer to any of the rest of the guys !  :)

Definitely any and all are invited and I do hope to be joining the fray soon.

I popped the vacuum line off the petcock this morning and found fuel. And I'm back to "no start." Guessing the plug is probably fouled, too. Bah!

So, I either have to wait on the part to arrive, or perhaps mod the OEM petcock in the meantime. Of course no local suppliers have either the OEM or Yamaha part in stock.

I get the idea behind the OEM design, but can't understand WHY Suzuki didn't improve it.  :-[

SCS40:

Disconnect the vacuum line to the petcock - put a cap on the carb spigot and shove a bolt in the line.

Set the petcock to "PRI".  This mechanically opens the petcock and does not rely on the diaphragm.

See if the bike runs normally.  If it runs well then your carb is OK and the petcock is causing your problems....if it runs crappy then you need a carb cleaning.

Thanks Dave. That info is good to know.

Title: Re: Any SC/NC/GA Members?

'twas the petcock. And a fouled (new) plug.

Did my own (quick) mod to the petcock, cleaned the plug, and voila! Of course the Raptor petcock will probably come tomorrow. Did about 50 miles with my younger daughter today. Pulls strong, smooth idle, starts up no issue hot or cold.

BTW, turning the OEM petcock to "PRI" bypasses the vacuum system to begin with and forces the diaphragm open mechanically. No need to plug anything.

However, it does seem the best test is to pull the vacuum line and check for fuel. If present, you likely already have symptoms (surging, hard start, etc.).

Found this group on Meetup and thrilled to see they're in my backyard. Looks like they take pretty regular rides and understandably favor the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Be nice to see a few other Thumpers :)

Group rides are the most dangerous rides!!!  That said, it looks like you might have found a good group to ride with.  Be safe and have fun.

Will do. The Raptor fuelcock came USPS yesterday and should get it installed tomorrow. Got new rubber last week and fresh oil so I'm ready to roll.  8-)

So , SCS40

Some folks like to put a tent on their bike and "wonder-off" for a few days  8-) .

Some folks like to make motel reservations and go find fine dinning for a few days  8-) .

Some folks like to truck or trailer their bike to where the fun begins  8-) .

Some folks have been know to do all the above and have even more variations . 8-)

Where do you fit in ?

Great question. For starters I’d say mainly day trips although I do have a tent and some camping gear (somewhere). Hotels and nice restaurants certainly aren’t out of the question.

As for trailering, although I’ve never taken a long (4+ hours) one way ride, that seems to defeat the purpose. At least part of it. Unless it’s a show bike or something.

I have a cousin my age who recently completed his 3 corners tour on a Concours. 11k miles. He’s putting his vids on YouTube. He did all the above except trailer. I guess it’s in the blood.  8-)

Sure. I’ll start a new thread.

I checked with him before posting here as I saw the vids are private. He's battled YouTube on music choices so he's not making them public. Sorry guys. 'Twas an epic ride.

On the other hand, I installed the Raptor petcock this morning before work and it works flawlessly. Anyone up for a jaunt?

I trailer on a regular basis......for several reasons.

A lot of the time I will leave work after an evening council meeting and make the 7-9 hour drive to the TN/NC/GA riding areas.....and I arrive very late at night.  Taking the car and trailer allows me to arrive late and just climb into the trailer beside the bike to sleep for the first night without setting anything up.....it is not uncommon that I would arrive between 1-3 AM!  If I were to take the motorcycle and ride the more enjoyable back roads it would add 3-4 hours to my travel time.  (With full retirement arriving next year I will not have evening meetings and I will be a lot more flexible in when I travel).

Very often I have encountered incredible storms on my way to/from the riding areas.  It is really nice to have the bike tucked away inside the trailer and for me to be in my dry and comfortable car while I commute.  That way I can travel on the days when there is rain....and save the sunny days for riding!

My Suzuki Savage is a Cafe' bike and it does not have any space for luggage.  It is a blast to ride - but not great for traveling and hauling gear.

I have made a few "motorcycle only" trips and stayed at MM's house or in a hotel or cabin.  I have never yet packed a tent and sleeping bag - but I expect that will happen before much longer.  My upcoming retirement on June 30, 2022 will give me far more freedom.
