It’s a regular topic of academic papers. As the sun ages, it will grow larger so moving the earth further away is a way to get students to understand the forces involved in astrophysics. Apparently the top candidates are either giant sails to catch the solar wind or ion engines that would make tiny changes over a long period of time. Putting it into practice is another matter of course. The technical obstacles are beyond us right now. Sort of like supplying the world’s energy needs with windmills. You can’t however capsize an island by putting to many people on one end regardless if it’s an academic exercise or not. So yes, poor little Hank Johnson will get to keep his title. |
