Title: Muffler for deeper rumble
Post by Neil on 04/15/21 at 03:45:27

Is this the right place for a newbie to ask for info about mufflers that have a deeper pitch "rumble" for a 2006?

"Rumble" is not common with a single cylinder engine from my limited experience, but I do know people get good results from a Harley Dyna muffler.  They are easy to put on if the rail lines up.

One thing is to keep the RPM's up on this bike.  I know some people dial it down to get a lower "thump thump thump" sound but that reduces oil coverage and will damage this particular engine.

I have found that the most pleasing tone on the Savage is achieved with a muffler that utilizes a baffle in conjunction with packing.  The packing filters out all the high frequency noise and gives the exhaust note a pleasant, low frequency thump.  The Dyna muffler sounds decent and it does utilize both a baffle and packing.

This post provides some insight and data on a variety of mufflers.

This post shows you how to fabricate an excellent muffler that sounds great and yields excellent performance.  It's cheap too.  Although I used a lathe to fabricate a number of the components, I'm confident that it could be fabricated with common hand tools (vice, drill, hack saw, files, grinder, etc.).  None of the parts demand any high degree of accuracy.  It's a killer muffler, sounds great and halls freight.

This is the guide to the easy, inexpensive Harley Dyna muffler exchange. Many of us have gone this route.

Somewhere on here is a thread where a bunch of us posted clips of our exhaust sound with a Dyna muffler.  I couldn't find it, but here's mine:

And I would add that DragBikeMike is a master of motors.  The Dyna is just a "nearly" bolt-on replacement using a tin can gasket.

I live near this place and they have a shed full of Harley dealer take off mufflers. I needed mufflers for a Goldwing I was fixing up and bought two new Harley mufflers for $10 a piece.

I found a couple of HD Dyna sets on craigslist last summer.  I think I paid $40 per set.  I snagged them up because the are the slightly shorter ones that match the one on my bike now.  I picked up a set a few years back that were a little longer and I didn't like the look.

I could part with a couple if anyone is interested.

Neil, I went with the VooDoo slash cut. Had to make an adapter connector from header to muffler and ultimately added 2 baffles. Also had to fab a mounting plate for attachment to bracket on bike. Sound is much deeper and fuller, not too loud at idle but announces you on road when in traffic and lay on throttle. I did a post about parts and mods previously on site. I am very happy with both the sound and look.

I have a slash cut screaming eagle muffler, and it’s got a nice deep brappp to it. I’ve been told it sounds like old muscle car exhausts with the glass packing. I love it, but I’m sure it’s too loud for some.

I had great luck tuning the carb with it, also.

i have a Delkevic muffler for about 5 years now and i like it, its a bit loud when you get on it but for cruising its got a nice deep tone.

i have the 21" slash cut, its a direct bolt on and even includes the adapter/hanger which fit perfect.  i did not have to rejet right away, but eventually went with a 150/55 set as im right at sea level and it seems happy there.
