Title: Timing marks and TDC marks..
Post by haggis57 on 04/15/21 at 03:43:00

I screwed up and got ahead of myself by securing the Alternator cover before installing the new head gasket.
Is there any correlation between the T timing mark on the alternator hub and the TDC marks on the alternator nut and cover?

There is no mark on the "alternator nut".  In fact, the rotor is held in place by a bolt.  But there is a mark on the rotor hub that correlates with the TDC mark on the rotor OD.  This picture shows the mark on the rotor hub lined up with the slot in the timing plug hole.

Good luck.

I'm trying to figure out if I can somehow use the TDC mark and notch to set the timing with the cam..or do i just bite the bullet and pull the cover again and install a fresh gasket.

TDC is TDC no matter how you arrive at it.

You can derive TDC by the piston.

The plug fires TDC,each time. Don't freak out. As long as you got the cam timing marks right, you're golden.
If someone says otherwise, I'll be surprised.

Thanks guys. I just wasn't100% that the timing mark and TDC marks were in harmony. Rock on !

Caveat

The piston at tdc, and cam timing marks at the same time.
You can check that by putting it on tdc,, compression, and making sure all valves are adjusted right. Just a finger shake on them, they need to feel very similar if exhaust are tight, intake loose, or vice versa then you let the piston drift down while you were focused on the cam chain. Ask me how I know.
But no biggie.
Drain the oil
Pull the exhaust
Pop the side cover
Yeah, everything to get the cam chain off
Get it on tdc
And don't use a ratchet.
An extension, breaker bar, vise grips, or a friend to keep the piston from moving.
If you can get tdc and hold it till compression leaks down the piston will stay up.

Rotate the crank CCW, only
If it gets away from you
Go around.
Don't back up.
Don't ask me why
I just know that is what the smart guys say.
