Title: Kawaguchi Auto Race
Post by DragBikeMike on 03/30/21 at 16:04:35

Craziest stuff I've ever seen.  The bikes are nuts, the riders nuttier.  I love it.

Those bikes will beat gp bikes on that track.   It's something to see.

I think it's like horse racing over there.

Edit:  I just watched the video. Definitely gambling lol.  Cool stuff.

If you can ride with those bars, water doesn't matter

The narrator didn't correctly interpret what the little handle on the right side of the frame was for when he was in the museum - he said it was for push starting the bike.  If you watch the racing - you can see the riders wedge their right knee under the handle to hold them securely on the bike!

The way they lean the bike over and sit upright seems counter intuitive.  Why are the bike faster around the turn when you force the bike over onto the side of the tire?   Most road racing motorcycles lean their body over to try and keep the motorcycle more upright.  I suspect the tires are a very special compound, and even the track surface looks to be something other than asphalt or concrete.  And the track looks super clean - you don't see any loose rubber on the outside of the corners like you do at most paved tracks.

Naw, man, now I'm on the Kindle and the picture is small, but the first thing on the vidyu is handlebars, and it looks like the left hand is up, like the buckhorn savage bars, and the right hand is more like the handlebar of a beach cruiser bicycle.

NASCAR for bikes.  Go fast, turn left!

Right?!  It looks like understeer city! Opposite of how I understand riding a motorcycle.  But it's a very specific setup and task.

The other thing is how skinny the tires are.  I've seen bicycles with fatter tires!

I’m sure there is quite a bit of body English going on but you don’t see a lot of rider movement even when they put the foot out. I think it’s a traction thing the riders weight is always over the rear wheel. In American flat track there is a weight shift at the end of the straight , rider slides forward on the seat getting closer to the bars leg goes out , but here rider seems not to move much. Remember as soon as you are sliding/drifting you are scrubbing speed off going into turns then powering out of the turns. Their speed seems  more constant and tires stay inline. Consistent lap times , very consistent !

Right.  If I had to guess, they are steering with the rear of the bike and keeping the front wheel light.  So it's all about lean and rear wheel traction.  Pretty cool stuff.  I would love to try it.

Very reminiscent of American board track racing with some disturbingly funky handle bars ! ;D
