Title: The Party of Lies?  not entirely
Post by Mavigogun on 02/13/21 at 02:34:32

It seems after Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah attempted to deny his own account of the conversation he earlier claimed to have overhead between Trump and Senator  Tuberville during the attack on the Capitol- in which Trump was reported by Lee to have pressured Tuberville to delay the Electoral Count -AND after Trump's defense lawyers lied that Trump was unaware of the attack on the Capitol until hours later,  House Republicans were so disturbed they broke silence to give their own account of Trump's call with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Multiple House Republican members of Congress have now gone to the press, relaying their account of a shouted phone call between Trump and McCarthy during the attack, in which McCarthy begged Trump to call off his mob, who were at that moment attempting to break into McCarthy's office; Trump, they report, said “well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” McCarthy responding “who the f*ck do you think you are talking to?”

It would be several hours later before Trump would praise his rioters, tell them to go home, and approve troops to bolster the embattled police.

Apparently, for some Republicans, McCarthy covering for Trump was one lie too many.

A short while ago, the Senate voted 55-45 to call witnesses to address these reports.   It is certain the opportunity will be taken to call unrelated, obscuring testimony by the defense.   This just became a much longer trial.

The defense really took the awful position of claiming witness testimony wasn't being allowed, no due process, etc. Raskin had a great response about having their client (Trump) come speak for himself about what he was doing on 1/6, and his (lack of) response to the violence.

I have no problem with a longer trial. The same senators yelling about wasting time with this impeachment instead of providing relief for the American people have argued against stimulus checks and help for the past 12 months. I think the majority of Americans are seeing what bad faith actors the GOP are.

There is no better illustration of that than why Republican Congressional Representatives will be called to testify to McCarthy’s phone call, and not McCarthy himself: over the last few weeks, he has repeatedly made self-contradicting claims- no one believes McCarthy can be relied on to tell the truth.

It remains to be seen if the minority of Republicans attempting to salvage their brand will be successful.   It’s a dubious proposition.   Even if successful, we are given no real cause to hope for more than shedding of cosmetic skin.   Post-Realignment Republicans successfully galvanized supporters, transforming the racist and religious radical fringe into their base.   Generations cultivated to be cleaved by division will not be easily reconciled to civil democratic norms, me thinks.   The Lincoln Project Republicans are clearly sincere- but are they up to the task of restoration?

It seems the Senate has instead agreed to just enter the Washington Representative’s published statement into the record.

While some deemed it a foregone conclusion,  I had held out some hope-

-but no: the Republican Party has indicted itself, tied to the mast of Trump's sinking ship.
