Title: Events for 2021
Post by springman on 01/11/21 at 13:59:28

Is it too early to start thinking about this. I would like to make it to at least 2 rides this year. My favorite is still the Texas Hill Country so I would like to offer that up to see who is interested.

I have to admit that the Arkansas riding was amazing so if anybody would be interested in that again.

Tail of the Dragon????

New places are always cool!!!

Oh and just a reminder. I don't think any of us are getting any younger. Lets get out and do this while we can.

..........................

If the virus subsides this summer , then I'd love to have company this year !

I'd like to take you fellers up to the "Loveless Café" for lunch one day then down the Trace to a southern Tn. route back to Lynchburg .

Do we have any flat-tracker fans here ?    In the next town over we have a Nationally sanctioned Flat-track event in normal summers.   I'll ask my buddy Pat if he's putting it on again this year.   Versey you remember Pat (the guy that had the rectifier) for Beast , he's all-ways doing some event.
..............................

Springman ,  from your house to mine , its two 400 mile days up the Natchez trace ,with free camp-grounds - then one short day from my house to the Dragon/Suches area.  I've got a spare bedroom with full size bed if wife joins ya.

Heck : one day last year me and Dave rode from the Dragon to my house and then back to the Dragon in the same day !  ;D

All you fellers are always welcome any time your in the area.  I've got a couch and a twin bed in the rock-house now too.   Then there is four recliners in the living room ...  ;)

I've some-what perfected my "Ribs on the Grill" from last time I tried cooking some of them for ya'll  :-[.   Having a REAL smoker has helped with that a little !

I'd like to try again for the Blue-Bonnet Ride in late spring.   Maybe Marcia and I will have the vaccine by then ?   :-?

If I was going to Texas next week then I'd be bring Kate too .   She's the Kawasaki/Triumph hybrid bike also know as a W650 , she's running like she was meant too.   It takes getting up to 5,000+ rpm to get the 50 hp out of her , but she is really mild mannered and sweet from 1500 to 3500 rpm where most of our time is spent.

The Hill Country in the spring time sounds good to me MM. I look forward to meeting Kate. I'm not sure but I'm guessing I would probably take the S40 for that trip. I think the S40 likes the Hill Country.

RIDDING DOUBLE IS THE THING ...

THE SAVAGE IS A LITTLE SHORT ON PASENGER ROOM .  :-?

BUT

I HAD A SIMULAR THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEING A SAVAGE RIDE AND ALL .   :-/

WE HAVE RODE THE SAVAGE ON GROUP RIDES AND IT KEEPS UP WITH THE HARLEYS AND GOLD WINGS JUST FINE , EVEN GOING UP-HILL. ;)

ITS THE SEAT LENGTH THING.     LAST SUMMER WHEN I ONLY HAD TWO BIKES , THE GUZZI WAS WAITING ON A NEW TIRE AND WE HAD A RIDE TO ATTEND.   SO , IT WAS THE SAVAGE'S TURN TO HALL US AROUND FOR A DAY.    WE WENT UP THE NORTH GA. MOUNTAINS THAT DAY , UP TO A PLACE CALLED "SKY-LINE" INTO A NATIONAL FORREST AREA.   IT WAS FUN.   :)

STILL DON'T KNOW IF I WANT TO TAKE THE SAVAGE RIDDING DOUBLE OVER CATTLE GRATES ???  ::)

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by springman on 01/12/21 at 14:34:44

As tall as you are riding double on the Savage has got to be uncomfortable. If Marcia is coming with you you definitely want either Kate or the Guzzi. My Honda is much better than the Savage on the highway, but I still get a kick out of riding the S40 highway or not.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by MMRanch on 01/12/21 at 17:49:34

I like taking the Savage when Marcia is working and I'm by myself.   Springman you've got the 27 tooth front pulley ?   :-?

I've got the standard tank on it , but locally that 2.7 gallons have a lot of smiles in them !  :)

Title: Re: Events for 2021

Yes, I have the highway geared front pulley. And I agree, I get a lot of smiles per tankful.

I plan on doing as much riding as I can fit in.

The Texas ride would be nice.
A few trips to north GA, TN and NC for the usual rides.
A repeat of the fall ride in Arkansas.
I believe Deb wants to go visit Gettysburg.
It would be nice to go back to the Barber Vintage Motorcycle event.

I'm thinking : Go ahead with getting Vaccinated then quit being concerned with the C-19 stuff !    I get the flue vaccine every year and don't remember last time I was sick ???  :-?

Title: Re: Events for 2021

I'm getting vaccinated probably next week. I should have already gotten it but I had the crud last week and wanted to wait until not sick. I can get scheduled for it because I work for a doctor. So yes, I will have been vaccinated by the next time I see you guys.

Title: Re: Events for 2021

They say they've opened Disneyland for mass vaccination but they don't have enough for the current schedule let alone the masses.

besides, I don't mind them working out the bugs before they get to me.   ;D

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 01/15/21 at 03:31:37

It appears that the last week of April was the planned date for the canceled Texas ride last year.

MM and I went to Suches and rode around the area as a replacement ride.  The daytime temps were in the 60-70's....the overnight temps were in the high 30's to low 40's!

So......it does appear the end of April is about the soonest we can start on planning for any multi day rides.

Title: Re: Events for 2021

Yes, I think all the Hill Country rides have been April/May. Summer can be really hot here in Texas.

So Dave ... Do I need to bring SNOW SHOES to get from the the truck to the shop ?   :-?

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 01/17/21 at 02:29:42

No snow shoes required.

This winter has been relatively free of any snow and we have had less than an inch........the normal for February is 6.5 inches.  There has only been one snow that has covered the grass.  There has not been a lot of sun and so far we have not gotten below 20 that I am aware of.  In a normal year we would have been down below 10 degrees for a few days in February.......sometimes we get below zero.  The coldest I have ever witnessed was 25 below on a Saturday - and I was working outside surveying job on that day!

No, at that temperature the air is dry, the snow is fluffy and makes scrunchy/squeaky noises when you walk in it.  The snow is so frozen it doesn't pack or stick to anything.

Thankfully we were taking topo of a large hillside and I was moving around giving them shots in a 25' grid - I got to move around while the instrument man was standing in one spot!  Today with electronic total stations it is far easier and faster.  Just before I retired the company bought a drone that can fly around and do the same thing the 3 of us were doing manually.

Just took a look at the long range weather forecast and I see that 2 weeks look like viable options for the Hill Country. April 11-17 and May 2-8.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by MMRanch on 02/08/21 at 18:11:20

The week in May might be easier for me , but I'll be glad to go on a ride either one of them !
:)

MM mentioned "last of April-first of May" in another thread.  And that he wanted to see the Hill Country bloom again.
Mid April is better if you are coming for the wild flowers.

Here is a chart of what blooms when... as a best guess:

What ever ya'll decide, and if you want me to lead you around,  I will need to know sooner than later so I can arrange vacation time.

The week starting April 11 is looking really good right now. You can check the weather forecast for Kerville, Tx for the month of April on Accuweather. It shows lows in the mid 50's and highs in the lower 80's for that week. That sounds ideal to me.

Deb is anxious to go.......she said even if the group decided not to go she wants the two of us to go to Texas! (She has cabin fever and wants to go somewhere......soon!).

It is hard to decide if we want to go early and see the Blue Bonnets - or a bit later to see the bats come out of the tunnel!

The week of April 11 works for me.

Any other takers? The Hill Country has some really good motorcycle roads and there is also lots of good eating in the area. The roads are winding but not as demanding as the Tail of the Dragon. Join the fun.

Looks like Hammer is in.

Versy, I sure would love to see you. Any chance you will make it?

Right now it looks like Lancer, Hammer and I will share a cabin so plenty of room left for you Versy.

Dave, will you guys be coming with your trailer and staying at the same place as us (Kerrville Schreiner Park)?

MM, I guess you need to take a look and see what you like. There are some options at the park.

Versy, what is the cabin number we normally get? I think we need to make reservations asap and I guess I can do that.

Springman

I was just looking at the "Ranch House (sleeps 8) ($200.oo/night) " at the Kerrville park.   I'll call them in the morning ... if its a three bedroom ... then how about us all getting it ?   There is a Carriage House (sleeps 6 more) that can go with it for a few $$$ extra ???
Indoor bathrooms (x2) and all ...  ::)

I'll find out about it Friday.    They don't have a very good web-master.

I'm thinking spend the Sunday (11th) - Friday night (17th) then leave Saturday morning ?   or   maybe Sunday morning (18th) ???

What think ye fellers ?   :-?

Glad to see Steve can join us !   :)     or should we call him Hammer ?

Go here:

Under "Camping", click on "Make reservation".
That takes you to a map of the park.  Click on the Ranch House to check availability.  Put in dates, leave Qty at 1.
Looks available for 04/10 to 04/17.

It looks like the "Carriage House" (Bunk House) is an extra $55 a night

Good Morning

OK , Guys :   I just got off the phone with the Kerrville park lady.

The RANCH HOUSE is ours for the 11th till the 17th of April .

I'll be getting an email receipt in a few minutes.

It's 3 br.  2 bath .    and it has a Kitchen !!!  :)

One queen , one full , two twin , and a pull-out-couch .
We can add the CARRIAGE HOUSE that sleeps 6 if we want/need .

She said : "Were not accepting parties of more than 10 people" , so Versey - they are thinking of being Covid safe .
I hope you can join

Versy..  I understand your concerns.
Still want you to come and enjoy the rides, the company, and see who "kisses the mountain" this time.. sigh   :-/

Deb and I made reservations for a room at a house just a short way down Main Highway......we will be 13 minutes away at 125 Tracks Trail, Center Point, TX 78010, USA

Without knowing exactly how 8 people use 2 bathrooms for a week without any kind of "Maid Service".....and how 8 people can fit all their gear into one cabin, and how we all arrive with cars, trucks, trailers and motorcycles - we chickened out and got a place close by.

Title: Re: Events for 2021

OK guys ,  :-?

Here's the thing :

We can keep the three bedroom/2 bath/ kitchen/living room for $30.00 each/night  :-?

or

Ya'll can get a camping cabin for $15.00/night/each   and    I can change to the "Sleeps two" cabin they have .

I'm having a great time ridding the hill country either way , and I understand keeping cost down is half the fun .  8-)

Its good we started early !  ;)

So , DO WE KEEP THE BIG ONE ?

My vote says... keep the big one.

I won't be there every night.  I don't know if I will be there any night.  But I will still pony up and pay for it as if I was there all the time.

When I do stay, I would rather have a bit of room to stretch out and not have to go outside to even change my mind.   ::)

Plus a fridge!!

And Lancer may have a +1.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by LANCER on 03/06/21 at 14:53:50

I think my +1 will be going according to his desires stated today, but he needs to make arrangements for his wife’s transportation.  She is not able to drive at all so needs help when he is gone.
So there will be about 4 or 5 of us in the 6 person cabin after Dave and MM SLINK OFF for alone time with wives ?
I believe that will work unless others want the small cabins instead.

Has everyone had vaccinations except for Versey ?

Title: Re: Events for 2021

So there will be about 4 or 5 of us in the 6 person cabin after Dave and MM SLINK OFF for alone time with wives ?

Whoa , whoa , whoa Lancer ,  ;D

Marcia and I are still in the Ranch House .    I like having coffee made in the morning , and a kitchen to play in.    And a fridge to keep a cool drink chilled .

I'd like to have the Full or Queen bed room either one is OK .   :)
....................................

The Ranch House does cost more but has more too ...  :-?

Its $200/night  -  30/each * 4  and I'll pick-up the slack.   I think we should leave YouzGuyz out of the $$$ and  buy him a beverage of his choice for leading us around.

So I'm still in ... unless ... our 4 solo guys want the $60/night cabin.  Then and only then will I bail and find a motel or something.
Keeping the Ranch House does cost more so I can understand if our 4 solo guys go to a cabin.

But I need to know ...  ::)

I'm fine with $30.00 per night and I am sure Steve will be also. Lancer, if you and your friend are fine with that then let's commit to the Ranch House with MM. If not, the mini cabin that we have stayed in in the past is fine with me but we just need to let MM know asap. Yes, I like keeping it as cheap as possible but $30.00/night is still within my means.

I like the idea of the Ranch house but question having only 5 beds.
I love you guys but don't particularly want to sleep with any of you.

Here is a likely scenario:

Queen - Mike and Marcia.

Full - Lancer

Twin Beds - Springman and Steve

That leaves the Pull out couch for Youzguyz on those nights that he wants to use it.....or for Lancer's friend if he comes.

If Versy gets the vaccine or decides to come without it - if Lancers friend comes and Youzguyz sleeps over often - you may need to add the Carriage house to get more beds.

There may be room to set up cots in the carriage house.

The website isn't very clear on what is inside the Ranch House or the Carriage house - I believe the photo with the 4 bunk beds is the carriage house.  I would also suspect that the Carriage House does not add any plumbing....so no additional bath facilities.

I did look at the map, and the Ranch House and "Bunk" house is at the beginning of the road to the park - and you don't even go through the gate to access them.  You are remote from the shower/toilet areas in the campground - you would likely have to drive to use them.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by LANCER on 03/07/21 at 11:34:00

That sounds workable.
If there are 2 sets of bunk beds that adds even more total beds.
Let’s stay with the ranch/bunk house.
Sorry for the back and forth.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 03/07/21 at 14:36:03

Since the Bunk/Carriage house (It is called Bunk House on the Map - but Carriage house on the website) is only available if you rent the Ranch House - there is no chance that anyone can rent the Carriage house while you have the reservation for the Ranch house.

So it is very likely you could add it at anytime during the week if you decide you need the extra room.  You may find out you need the extra space just to keep all your gear!

I'm fine with the Ranch House as I mentioned earlier. I have been thinking about it though and MM you need to make sure Marcia is fine with it as I believe there will be no real privacy for her. Privacy amongst the guys is not big deal as we are all old men. :o

I've got those military type cots that come in a bag .   I'll bring two of them .   ;)

It would cost an extra  $55. to get the extra 2 bunk beds.   Remember the couch folds out and we don't have to fold it up every day for my part.

I'll bring at least 3 folding bag chairs too.

To? Yes  Over?  No
It is closed to vehicle traffic. (as of the last report here)

A little over 2 hours to get there.

Of course, my route would not be as ... direct...   ::)

And, it is a dirt road to get to the bridge.  (Or was the last time I went.. long ago)

Why not?  We can still go there.  We can walk on the bridge.  We just shouldn't ride on it.

It's an unpaved road (I just say "dirt" as a generic word for such things) for less than a mile to get to the south end of the bridge.
Looks like caliche in street view at the end.

StoneHENGE (I know you call it Hinge just to aggravate me) is certainly on the list.
I don't remember Old Rider going through a yard, but when you are leading you don't see a lot of the antics going on behind you.  What isn't seen, is hard to remember.. at my age...

I was sweeping that ride, so I did not see him go in.  I got off my bike to help another rider that went down on the bridge, then saw them dragging his bike out of the river.
Got it out, emptied out the saddle bags (full of water).  Wired up the kickstand (broke the mount or spring), and ... it started.   :o
Rode to the Dam Red Barn.  When he parked, it sounded like a teakettle.  ;D

I looked up the Slime  Bridge on YouTube.  It appears to be a real nightmare when the water is flowing over it and the slime is wet - the dry crossings when the water is low doesn't look to be scary.

Does anyone have room in your saddlebag for a big bag of sand? :-?

It might be fun to start the app as we begin the trip and we can see how each other are moving along as we head toward Texas.

We are leaving the morning of April 9th and hopefully returning home on the evening of April 18th......so the Life360 session should be open for that period of time for us (your time period may be shorter/longer).

I just got off the phone with Steve (Hammer) he is having to bow out as an important, high paying job has come up for him that will run through the week of the 12th. Which means I will probably take the S-40 on the ride if I can get a few items taken care of by then.

I have begun to make some preparations:

Changed oil in car, license sticker for the trailer, added a USB charging port on the motorcycle......and a new pair of riding pants (MM doesn't think it is appropriate to ride a BMW wearing jeans).

I have started thinking about routes and places.
I know places of interest include:
StoneHinge - (they might be scheduled for oiling).
Three Twisted Sisters - (shouldn't go on Wednesday, store is close).
Alamo Springs Cafe - (for MM's burger) - only open Fri, Sat, Sun. (since when??)
Hillbillyz - (cause I said so) only open Fri, Sat, Sun.  hmmmm.. may need to by pass
more as I think of them

If you have druthers and where and what, let me know.  I'll figure out when and how.

:-?

So durning the week ...
I'm thinking - there is a big grill on the deck of the cabin ?    We could do something like :   Everybody pick-out what they want at the grocery store , then slap it on the grill at the same time .   I could bring my big crock-pot too.   The cabin has some pots and pans too ?     Remember how handy that grill was that Dave and Deb brought was ?    I've got a Stove-top grill I can bring and the cabin has a stove !   ;)   Two stove-top grills would be good if anybody else has one.
Think , 5 pound bag of Skinless-Boneless Chicken Breast glazed in BBQ sauce under a sheet of aluminum foil on a grill top !!! :P
Na , not yet !  ;D

Our first night in the Cabin will be Sunday night the 11th. and our last night will be Friday .     But that can be modified by the will of our fellow Cabin-mates and the good will of the folks running the park.
...................

Dave I know your an early riser , so we'll expect  you for breakfast most morning , and I kind of suspect you like cooking as much as I do ?  :)

O'yea , .....

(MM doesn't think it is appropriate to ride a BMW wearing jeans).

Your right Dave , everybody knows BMW ridders " MUST MATCH the BIKE ! " .
Anything less and you would just be a Guzzi or Savage person on a BMW .   ;D

;D ;D ;D

So , Marcia ask if you'll be wearing White Pants ??? ... I'm guessing they would be a Contrasting or Complimenting , Reflective  color .  :-/

Dave don't forget :   Your Passenger must match also ... hay ... Deb had a really neat looking ridding outfit last time I saw her  .
Your wife has good taste .   8-)
...............

8 days  and I don't have my chores done up yet !!!  :-/

Well.....it doesn't appear the Slime Bridge is going to be very slippery this year.

It appears we have 3 weeks forecast without the only chance of rain on Sunday, April 4....and that is only a 30% chance of rain.  Can this part of Texas really be that dry?

Most of Texas is in a drought state of some severity.  Most of where we will be is in D1 or D2. https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?TX
As such, water crossings will normally not be covered, at all.  I have not looked at Slime Bridge recently, but it may be mostly dry.  I will try to get there Saturday for an evaluation.
It is part of a nice road to Wimberley, but there are easy ways around it.
All of the crossings I normally go over are dry now.. or so short as to make no difference.

I could use some info as far as when you are planning to arrive and route once you hit Texas.
Depending on this and that, I may "escort" you in..  Might hit side roads in the process depending on route and how tired you are!
Yeah.. lots of maybe and might.. but, I need info to see if possible.
And, yes, I understand that travel plans often change en route.
Post here or PM me.

If someone has a Life360 circle already setup with some of the participants, please send out invites to me (and the rest).  If not, I will setup a circle on my account using cell phone numbers provided to me.

Youzguyz:

You might as well set up the Life360 if you are familiar with how to do it, as you are the only one with all the phone numbers.

You likely don't want to escort in Deb and I - or Marcia and Mike, as we will be in our cages hauling the motorcycles in.

Deb and I will be leaving KY on Friday morning - and with luck we will make it to Little Rock by the evening......unless Deb decides she wants to stop at Memphis and be touristy.

Our first night at our Kerrville lodging is Sunday night - so we will need to stay someplace else on Saturday night.  I expect we will be someplace in Texas on Saturday night.......I just don't know where.

We have family in Waxahachie, and maybe we will spend a few hours visiting them (Or maybe they will invite us to spend Saturday night with them!).

I just need to change the oil on the S40 and hopefully I can route the wiring for a usb port without  having to take off the tank. I wanted to change the clutch push rod but just have not had the time. Though the ride to the Hill Country would be easier on the Honda, I think the S40 is better suited for those roads. I have not yet decided what route I am taking or how early I am leaving on Sunday morning, but I'll let you know Neal.

web site sez:
This means someone you know invited you join them on Life360 and be part of their private Circle. What an honor! If you are a new Life360 user you will be asked if you want to Join a Circle and you'll be shown who's currently in it. Simply join by entering an Invite Code in the message, or by creating one of your very own. If you are an existing user, you can join a Circle by tapping on the Circle Switcher at the top of the screen and then tap on 'Join a Circle'. Enter the code you received and you will be placed into your new Circle.

I logged onto Life360 and you should see me in KY.....it is going to be a bit boring watching me drive around Campbell County for the next few days so I will turn off my location on the phone until we start driving.  If I remember correctly the app does use some data and battery - so turning the location off while I am stationary might be a way to put the tracking in "pause" and keep the app from tracking me while I am not moving.

Deb and I want to go by the General Store in Luckenbach to buy a T-Shirt or two......they store is open every day.  If the group wants to go and eat there - the restaurant is open Thursday-Sunday 11:30AM to 8PM.  If the group doesn't want to go.....Deb and i can stop on our way in/out of Kerrville.

Luckenbach can definitely added to the mix.  It is normally as part of the Alamo Springs Cafe (for lunch) ride.  So, we will be doing that on Friday.

One of the reasons I have not yet logged in - is I believe the Life360 app documents the time you are traveling, the speed, and where you stop.  You really don't want that much information on how I spend my work days and evening hours.

Once we get underway you will know when we are on the road, and every time we stop.....and where we stopped......and how long we stayed there!

And - we will know the same about you!  If you stop at Madam Lena's - we will know! ;)

Title: Re: Events for 2021

Title: Re: Events for 2021

I will admit that I drove past Madam Lena's on a regular basis - but I never went inside to see her.

And.......it is not nearly as bad as your imagination might have led you to believe.

Madam Lena was a palm reader who was located in Newport, KY - right across the street from the county courthouse.  I would go to the Clerk's Office on a regular basis to research deeds and make copies of the subdivision plats.

Fredericksburg is 35 minutes away from our place.

Last night I opened Youzguyz link he provided for the route to Los Jarritos.

Later in the evening I opened "Google Maps" to see the spacial relationship of Comfort, Center Point, Kerrville and Fredericksburg.

When the map came up and I got to the area - there was a little Green Pin Point showing that I have an Airbnb reservation April 11-17, and a Red Pin Point showing Los Jarritos.

The way Google is tracking what I do is getting a little scary.

I spent most of yesterday at the ER for a strange back pain.   After a CT scan they thought I had Gall stones and enlarged organ with lesions on the kidneys as well, then after another different follow up scan found it was not gall stones but the kidney lesions are there but don’t need immediate action.  Part of the back pain is coming from a muscle spasm that may have started when I was looking for a little leak on REX.
Apparently I was fortunate for all these to basically happen simultaneously.
I’m thankful that there is nothing serious that requires immediate action and also that I was not on the ride away from home dealing with the symptoms I have for right now.

Thank you guys for your thoughtful care.

I haven't tried the address yet but I was thinking I should rinse the dust off the rear rim before I load it up.   :-?

So , the Garmin can find anything if I use the right address .   The thing is sometimes its picky about Hwy numbers are sometimes referred to as other names .
I live off Hwy-Tn.129  but it is also know as Boonville hwy.    Sometimes I wonder , "Why all the roads can't just be numbers" with the county, state, or US prefix .   That would be too easy to really work !  ::)

We went about 600 miles today - it was pretty hilly until we got to Arkansas.  We are just east of Little Rock and stopped for the night.

Between Memphis and Little Rock we got into a thunderstorm and a strong headwind - my car couldn't pull high gear over 65mph the headwind was so strong!

We will stop in Waxahatchee tomorrow and visit Deb's step sister and spend the night with them.

We will arrive in Kerrville on Sunday afternoon.

Garmin knows EVERYTHING about your travels and locations now.
How many phone apps does your phone use to track locations and routes and and and ....
Makes me want to switch to a dumb phone and save a Garmin for select trips only.

We spent Friday night just short of reaching Little Rock.  We ran through a bit of rain - but while driving on Saturday we discovered that maybe it was good we didn't continue driving that night.  When we got into Texas we saw lots of downed trees, damaged billboards, tall grasses that had been smashed down by the wind/rain and a lot of leaf debris on the edges of the pavement.  Evidently there were some really strong winds and rain on Friday night.

We spent Saturday night with Deb's stepsister Lindy and her husband Rick last night in Waxahachee.  We got a tour of the town and a wonderful steak dinner!

We have about a 5 hour drive to reach Kerrville today.  I would like to leave Waxahachee before noon - but we have had so much fun visiting Lindy and Rick I suspect it will be hard to get away!

MM:  It sounds like your Life360 is a far more advanced version than I was able to download.  I can see where everyone is and how fast they are driving or if they are sitting still - maybe if I zoom in I can see the overnead and street views you are talking about.  So far I have only been able to see Youzguyz and me on Life360.....and a note that says Springman has logged off.

I just saw and advertisement for a site called "hipcamp" - it looks like a more rugged version of Airbnb.  I have not had time to check it all out and see if it would help this group.

Deb and I arrived at our temporary home around 5PM.  We got unpacked and unloaded the bike.......and are resting on the patio recovering from our 1,212 miles of driving.  The owner Tom used to road race motorcycles - he moved his truck over so I could park my motorcycle in the garage......my kind of host!

MM and Springman have checked in and they are in Fredericksburg and they got MM's bike unloaded..

Our hosts (Tom and Kim) said it was 43 degrees this morning!  Tomorrow morning is forecast for the low 60's when we start riding, and a high of 88.

Things are bigger in Texas.

On Sunday when we were driving west of Killeen, we stopped at Buc-ee's.  It is a huge gas station/convenience store.......the inside was filled with T shirts, gadgets, novelties, packaged food, a wall of candy, an 80 foot long wall of coolers, a deli, a grill and a fudge counter.

There were two canopies with a total of 56 gas pumps!

MM left his cows at home with a big block of sweet feed to keep them occupied while he is away.

Here he is considering changing his herd to this Texas style of cattle with convenient handles to help him when he is loading them - however he will have to widen the fences in his chute and possibly make some modifications to his trailer.

On Tuesday we were guided by Youzguys on a ride out to Leakey and we proceeded to assault the Twisted Sisters.  The traffic was amazingly light and the majority of drivers pull over and wave us past when they see 4 motorcycles behind them (except for one driver who was content to let us ride behind them while they drove slowly around each corner).

My employment as a City/County engineer has included lots of work on road drainage systems - and the "low water crossings" in Texas are amazing to me.  On our daily rides we pass over hundreds of low areas that are designed to allow the low water flow to go under the road - and the high water flows to go over the road!  This is completely different than the way the roads and streets are designed in Kentucky, where the storm water flows are supposed to stay off the pavement.  I will have to ask some of these local Texans if they just hunker down in their homes and avoid driving while the water is flowing over the roads.......each low water crossing has a pole with a scale showing how deep the water is at that point - so you can determine if you are brave enough to drive through.

I have posted a photo from a large water crossing on the Frio River that is   in the valley between the Twisted Sisters.  This wash area is huge and appears like it would have a large amount of water during rain events.  The land in this part of Texas is very rugged and rocky.

Here is what the lineup looks like from the rear on the flower tour.

There is a cattle guard everywhere that the fence crosses the road - somehow this keeps cattle from wandering.

Not all of the cattle guards are smooth - I adopted the Marcia Meter to determine how rough they were and how much I needed to slow down.  If Marcia bounced out of the seat when she and Mike crossed - I would slow down.

After a shower and various had washings my hands are now a pale blue/black. From this ride home I can say that the shinko 712 tires are very good wet weather tires.

Yea , That Chain pin moving could have been "BAD" !   :-[

I'll drop a tooth on the front sprocket when I get around to fixing it ... so it might involve shorting the chain a link ?    Those high speed long up-hill pulls into the wind and riding double didn't leave a lot of throttle in reserve .
It was over geared according to the GPS anyway.  When I put a new chain and sprockets on it in the "Fixing-up" process I picked a "O-Ring" chain and the tall gear package because it gave bigger sprockets on both ends.
The new chain had close to 3000 miles on it with out needing a chain adjustment .   The old regular chain needing adjusting every 800 miles on my last chain drive bike (KZ750-4cyl).
But to drop one tooth up front will make the speedometer right , it drives off the transmission/front sprocket rotation (electronic pick-up).   ;)

As soon as I get the rest of my chores caught -up !   ::)

I broke that bracket on Thumper MULTIPLE times.  After the 4th or 5th welding, (and multiple fixes with JB Weld and Steel putty), my welder said "no more", so I bought a 2002 tank in darn good shape off ebay.

I was picturing the frame pin broken ...

That tank add-on bracket would be the "weak-link" and I can picture it coming loose .
Would brazing be better than welding ?    If a person was to pool a spot of brass on both sides then put them together it would be nice and solid.   Welding would only be around the outside edge of the bracket ... it would be good to use some brass around the edges to for a permeant fix.

I can see the factory using a spot weld there , silver solder would be as good as the factory spot weld and could be done with a wire brush and a blue-bottle torch .   Be sure to rinse the tank out with water before getting the torch out --- Just saying .   ;D

I feel the "need" for a ride in TN/NC/GA coming on.......perhaps the weather in June will allow for a few days riding in the mountains.

Also - is there interest in making an Arkansas ride again this year?  Verslagen has told me he now has his shots and is allowed to leave California....and he would be able to go.

If not Arkansas - a trip to Monument Valley and the Sturgis area is on the bucket list for Deb and I.....maybe this is the year to do that.  I know nothing about the weather or the area - I have a friend that is leaving in two weeks to go ride the area.  I can get some tips from him - but he rides 600 mile days so I am not likely going to be able to use his itinerary!  I do believe that the riding is faster and there are longer distances to cover between points of interest......it could be necessary to have lodging at a new destination each day.

Utah has some nice national parks !    8-)

The Black Hills , Cody , Beartooth Pass , Yellow Stone all are on my bucket list .
I'd rather find lodging that is friendly to my wallet , even if it comes in the way of small out of the main-stream places .   Marcia usually arranges the Lodging part and has last say in such matters in our part so most of the time , "my input" is only a suggestion .

I liked our Arkansas adventure and would go again , but spreading out is good too.   Its so-much more fun to go as a group.  :)

Cody is a good central spot for a lot of 250/300 mile rides.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 05/14/21 at 10:51:59

I don't know if it is too late to be able to get any lodging in a National Park....some of the State Parks in this area have the cabins reserved a year in advance - with the trailer parking areas reserved 6 months in advance.  Tent cabin areas are easier to get - but still require advance reservation.

We would likely be more able to get a spot reserved in a smaller privately owned cabin or campground.

If we are going to Arkansas - Deb and I would again take the camper and stay in the same place we stayed last year.  Even though it would be our third year there we still have more to explore.

If we are going someplace out west - our recent Texas trip revealed that getting lodging for a "group" can certainly become a moving target.  The needs to go on a budget and also have privacy for the female members of our group are not always easily resolved.....and we don't always know exactly how many of us will be able to make the trip.

Arkansas was fun and I would certainly go again. Riding in the Dakotas or there abouts could also be fun. I'll wait to see what you all decide.

I just looked at Mapquest.  It is about 600 miles for me to get to Jasper, Arkansas.  It was 1,300 miles for me to get to Texas....it is 1,600 miles for me to get to Cody, Wyoming.

I can lead trips in Arkansas as Deb and I have been there twice....and MM or I can lead trips in TN/NC/GA as we have been there a bunch of times.

I have no idea what to expect in Cody or anyplace else out there.  I don't know where to stay, where to go, what to do....how to get around.  I have a friend that has been there several times - I am sure he could give me some pointers.  I know he doesn't camp - they stay in hotels.

I have no idea what the best time of year you should go to ride a motorcycle in that area.  We may need a new "Scoutmaster" for riding out there!

I think (sometimes) that with  all the Surges traffic there would be lots of campgrounds/motels in the area.    If its a Campground then I'll be by myself and ride one of the Bikes .

Marcia and I will go visit Anders in Calf. sometime this year and Cody is almost on the way there (or back) if we take the Northern route.
For me it would be a 14 day trip plus a few days if it coincides with visiting Anders , that's about as long as I dare be away from home too !  ::)

Does anybody besides me think the week after Surges might be a good time ?
Weather permitting that is ...  :-?

I was just looking at google maps and Bear Tooth probably needs to wait until I retire as it would be a 14 day trip minimum for me also as it is 1600 miles plus each way. I think for now I need to limit myself to a range of approximately no more than 1000 miles from my location.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 05/15/21 at 17:03:56

I talked it over with Deb....and a 3,200 mile commute to Cody and back is not something we want to do this year.  I am trying to take one weekend a month to drive 300 miles to my mom's house and get things cleaned/sorted/sold as she is in assisted living now.  That is going to take a lot of my time this year.

I will be retiring full time on June 30, 2022 - so in a year and a month I will be just a couple weeks away from retirement!

The trip to Cody, the riding and the trip back will take a couple weeks as others have stated.....so maybe we can plan that trip for 2022 or 2023?

I can check with my social engagement director and see if I am able to get away for a few days! ;)

I'm reviewing my Social Calendar now ?
..........................

Hay , we are talking about tent camp type thing right .   Marcia has already told me to "Go ahead and have fun" !

I can bring Kate or The-Savage ??   Its nice to have a choice !   :)
so
Since the tent is already paid for ... Does anybody else want to "bring a sleeping bag ?     I'm bringing a air bed - but its only a single wide , but the tent can be the 8' x 10' x 72" with two doors , its easy to share .   I believe it's  advertised as sleeping seven sardines .   ;D

I won't be able to get away until July. I've got things to finish up at work this month and most of June we will be short staffed. You guys enjoy. I'll try to catch the next one.

Yes, I am talking about a camping event in which we have a bit of a walk to get to the public bathroom.  At this point I really don't care if it is at the Kick Stand Lodge with Mo......or down in Suches at the Two Wheel Inn.  If Stew is coming then Suches is much closer for him and he can ride a lot longer on Sunday....I could pack up and go home on Monday.  The riding is good in Suches and the roads a bit less busy, and we can still get up to the other areas in TN/NC with an hour or so of commuting.

Let's plan on doing something if the weather is good....we can decide where as the dates get closer.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 05/17/21 at 18:55:30

Monday, May 31st is Memorial Day....that is the weekend I had tentatively marked for our trip.

That weekend is still OK with me, and Stew is checking to see if it is OK with Paula.  That weekend could have a bit more traffic than normal - but the good news is that I get Monday off and I could ride all day on Sunday and go home on Monday.

If you want to spend the Memorial Day weekend with family - we can go on a different weekend.

Title: Re: Events for 2021

I'd had the thought to head home on Sunday after breakfast .

Or

Maybe a early lunch (Sunday)  then cross the Skyway back into TN. ???   Hwy 30 going west out of Tellico is a nice ride .

I need to know which tent to bring .     They both pack-up to about the same size ... the set-up time and room inside is the biggest difference.

This Saturday is a Guzzi Meet-n-greet , I could see if some of them might want to meet us at Suches for a Saturday ride ?

I'm thinking that the Savage would be the "Right Bike" for this one .   :)

MM:

If you want to go home Sunday morning - Stew and I can ride part way with you (However the ride on the gravel Forest Road 15 is not an option this year!  Never trust a Garmin or the man who owns one).

Taking Route 52 from Chatsworth over to East Elijay over the mountain is a nice ride and very scenic.  Then head north on 76 to old 76, and then get to Dial Road is a really nice ride to Suches.

You have been on all those roads before - you and I rode them last spring when we went to Suches to replace the cancelled Texas ride.  On the trip back home on your Guzzi you had the extra tire strapped to the back of your bike.

I foegot to include that once on Old 76 you take Aska Road south to get to Dial Road.  (And we pass the Snake Nation Road you asked about last year).  They are all great curvy country roads with a light amount of traffic......and likely a great place to ride on a Holiday weekend.

If the weather is favorable I will bring my Savage.

Title: Re: Events for 2021

OK , on the Savage getting some exercise .    So we're all all bringing Savages/S-40's this time .    That's good !  :)
Its been a while !  ;)

I've got lighter weight tires on mine now .  The rear is a 120/90-16 and the front is a 90/90-19  .    It should be a little quicker to turn in .   I wonder if I'll miss any traction ?    I've slowed down a bit since my last Dragon area ride.   It seems like a slow ride beside a creek enjoying the scenery with Marcia on the back is 80% of my two-wheel adventuring for the last year or more ...

I might have a visitor for our Saturday (29th) ride ?   I'll find out the Saturday (22nd) .   :-?

I got confirmation from Stewmills that he is coming Friday evening and will stay for a morning Monday ride as well.

I will be arriving early Thursday evening and get the bike unloaded and camp set up.  I will have to camp out in the parking lot as I will be using my trailer for sleeping.  It is actually a bit more peaceful and less buggy out in that area.

The weather still looks good - they are now showing a 30% chance of rain on Sunday and Monday.

Bring the one that fits you best.

I am sleeping inside me trailer......Stew is bringing a tent of this own.

The weather forecast has been modified to include a 30% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday.  It is not a trip killer yet.........and at this point I am still planning on bringing the Savage Cafe' bike.  If the rain chances increase I may bring a bike that is better in the wet.  The Cafe' bike is great fun in the dry - but it throws water all over me if when the roads are wet.

I have to be in the parking area - as I will be sleeping in my trailer.  If you want to put up a tent next to me that is fine......or if you want to set up your tent down in the camping area that is OK as well.  The place isn't so big that it is a problem finding each other.  We can't have a fire in the parking lot - but it is pretty easy to find someone that will share their fire if we want (especially if you bring matches and a few fire starter bricks for those who don't).

One year Deb and I pitched tent on the other side of the creek from the deck.  The bugs were pretty intense - and when folks stayed up late and talked on the deck....it was hard to get much sleep.  The parking lot is really pretty deserted and peaceful at night.

The weather forecast has turned around and it looks promising.  Friday afternoon could be a bit iffy....hopefully we can dodge the afternoon storms that are forecast.

I am bringing the Savage Cafe and it is a truly wet experience in the rain.  If Friday afternoon looks dicey maybe I can get MM into my truck and we can go to town and eat dinner while the storms move out of the area.

I am here at Suches!

The weather this afternoon is great - there are looking clouds but there is no sign of impending rain.

The weather forecast for Friday has afternoon rain - the Sat/Sun/Mon are clear and cooler.  I am likely to stay and ride all day Monday and head home late in the day or early on Tuesday.

Dave and I had a good burger in Dahlonega in the way back to camp. We ate at an Irish pub called Shenanigans and their claim to fame (like other pubs do) is all of the dollar bills stapled to the walls and ceiling. Our waitress said there is maybe $7000+ in bills.

Look closely...since MM had to head home this morning we put up a bill in his honor.

Stew !  What am I going to do with ya !!

.......

Well ...

OK ,   Now ---   " The Rest of the Story "

So Stew , Dave and me are at one of the big picnic tables planning the next day's ride ... well ... Stew is about to BUST trying to hold something in - kinda like when ya just let gas out down the hall and got out without being seen.
Next I get back to my tent and find out its for RENT ?
Well , in the campground area where I'm at , there's a burn circle in the middle to share , so , over I go to share the tale and gather information.
We all had a good laugh as we pass Stew's sign around ( you did a good job with it Stew - everybody there giggled as they passed it on).
Then came the plan :   and I went to get Stew !   :P
But my phone rang first !
It was some Girl changed to Boy wanting to rent some [s]snuggles[/s] tent space for the night ... she/he sounded really nice so I told she/he  we would be expecting her/him .    I went to get Stew and Dave for the campfire.  ;)
but wait ...
Stew had called from his office phone so I couldn't tell who it was (good idea) till I called back with the message for him to come join the SNUGGLE PARTY and his secretary got it  (I can imagine the talk at the water cooler Tuesday Morning) ???    :-X

So

Stew and Dave make it to the fire-pit and I thanked him for the GREAT IDEA and let him know I've already made a $100.00 bucks and we've got room for one more in the tent !

I thought I'd had the last laugh till the $1 bill thing ... ... Now  ...  I might have to change my name before going to the pub for a hamburger ???  :-?

Last night some camp neighbors told us about Bell Mountain in Hiawassee GA. It is a single lane road with super steep inclines and warnings along the way about proceeding. We made it up safely lugging up in 1st gear the whole way. On the way down we left the bikes off and just coasted the whole way down riding the brakes the whole way. I wanted to see how far I could coast so as it opened up at the bottom I was coasting at about 30mph and there was a police cruiser there at the bend. I just smiled and waved as I silently rolled by with no engine noise or headlight and he just smiled and waved back. Dave was afraid of going to jail in the mountains of NGA so he switched his bike on so he was "legal".

If you're in Hiawassee look up Bell Mountain, but make sure you go on a day that the roads are dry and you aren't driving down in the dark.

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 05/31/21 at 19:28:02

Nice photo Stew.....except for the pile of laundry in front of my bike!  The ride began with air temps in the 50's, and by the time we made the hour ride to Bell Mountain it was warm enough to shed the rain gear that was being used as a "wind block" layer.

The riding was great and we got some good fun rides with and occasional long ride without any cars blocking our fun.  The morning rides had the least amount of traffic - afternoon rides had lot of cars and trucks to slow us down.

Stew and I learned a new trick for riding on a curvy road with traffic.  We pulled off the side of the road in one of the "pull off" areas and watched for a long open gap in the direction we were riding....and then when we saw a slow car with a long line of cars behind - we knew they were slow and the gap was likely to get larger.  We would pull out in front of that group and then ride at a fun pace until we caught up with traffic ahead - then pull over and wait for that slow car to catch up....then pull out and repeat the "fun run"  until we caught the cars ahead (repeat as necessary). This method seems to make the best of a bad situation - and allow fun riding even when traffic is busy.  Sure it is more fun to ride the curves "non stop" - but riding it in sections is better than just following slow traffic.

This was the first year that camping in the parking area at Two Wheels of Suches was not great - we had two large toy hauler/campers that ran their generators all night.  It was not bad in my trailer as it has insulated walls - but poor Stew was in a tent and pretty close to one generator.  Maybe next time Stew will want to set up in the camping area, and I may set up on the other side of the parking lot.

On the days that MM was there we mostly road curves - and then on the day we escorted him out Stew and I continued to take a long southern loop home.  Maybe on the next outing we should plan on a day to take a long ride to explore areas we haven't seen.  Although 3-4 days of riding is nice - a week would be much better!

:)

Hay , I'd love to get a ride every week like last week !  Its always good to see old friends again.  8-)

The camp-out was good even with my air bed leaking .

The day trips were good even with one of them being a rain day trip to "Wheels through time"

The loops and repeated rides up Blood Mountain were good , it seems all roads lead to Blood Mountain .

That Road Kill Café at the foot of Blood Mountain was good too !   Those ribs had to been from some big game Road-Kill.

The Bikers of all kinds being in the same place at the same time is priceless .   Saturday was Japanese bike day and it was great to see some of them bikes I lusted for in my youth and examples of the few that I had back then restored and in person.   ;)

One of the sorta strange biker locals dropped by the lodge while we were resting up on the porch and he had his riding partner with him. I was a bit surprised how little tire wear we had in 3-1/2 days of riding in the mountains.  The tires got a little bit scuffy - but my tires did not lose as much rubber as we normally do.

I believe the difference was the cooler temperatures we were riding in - evidently riding in 90+ temperatures really accelerates tire wear!

Arkansas Trip Planning.

Last year the Arkansas trip was September 12 - 20 - give or take a day.  Deb and I left home on the 12th and stayed overnight at a campground along the way....and arrived on Sunday the 13th.  We rode all week and left on Saturday morning. In 2019 when Deb and I first went we were there a similar week.......the 15-22nd.

To repeat the timing - we have a choice of the 3rd week (12 - 18) or the 4th week (19-25).  Your actual travel days may vary with the length of your commute.

The weather in September is generally very dry with only a few days of precipitation for the entire month.  It can be pretty darn hot at times!

Does anyone have any preference about which week?

I would like to start the planning soon - so I can get the trailer spot reserved at the campground.

It takes you and Marcia a day to travel to Arkansas - so it sounds like you would want to drive to Arkansas on Sunday the 19th and ride the following week (20-25).  That fits into what we have done previously - as Deb and I drive 2 days to get to Jasper. (We leave Sat 18 & arrive in mid afternoon on Sunday 19).

There is likely nothing really magic about having to leave on Saturday the 25th and anyone can stay a bit longer if they want.......in the past I have gone back to work on Monday - however we could stay a few days longer if the campsite is open.  The pet sitter for Lily and the Stoopid cat is the only thing we have to restrict us on how long we stay.

OK ,  :)

I enjoyed my stay at the campground last year .   The cabin might not be booked up yet  ???  But if it is ... then ... I better get on reserving it 19th - 25rd  ???.

The name of the town was Jasper the best I remember .

I'll have to go looking to see what's going to work after dark tonight .

The campground we stayed at last year was called Dogwood Springs.

I just sent them an email about getting a spot for our camper from September 19 - 25th.

I'm thinking of getting a room in  Little Switzerland  room (#3) , in Jasper Ar.    Best I can tell is in the town itself or close to it ?

Hay Dave , This is a regular Motel - w/all the good stuff - and you wouldn't have to pull your trailer - their regular rate $$ is friendly too

If we and our solo guys stayed here , we could just meet for our day rides

Is there a place near Harrison to park a travel trailer ?

Little Switzerland is a few miles north of downtown Jasper.  The cabins/rooms look like they are jammed together in a small area right next to the highway....they look interesting.  There are also a few hotels and cabins right at the edge of Jasper as you drive in from the north.....probably 1/2 a mile from the campground.  If you or any of the others decided to stay in Jasper, it is a short ride to gather for the day ride (or breakfast at our camper).  There are nice little shops and a great restaurant in Jasper (with those great milkshakes Marcia loves).....it would be a nice place to get a hotel room.  I believe the Arkansas House looks a bit nicer than the Riverview Motel - but I have never stayed at either one.

Harrison would not be a nice place to stay....it is full of traffic and pavement and it can be incredibly hot in September.  The first year Deb and I spent some time in Harrison getting travel information and it was a typical city and a bit confusing to get around in.  It also is a long way from the nice riding areas......it is north of the Ozark Mountains and we would need to ride 20 miles south every day to get to the good rides.  Jasper is right on the edge of the good riding areas, and the rides can be looped to leave on one road and come back on another.....the Buffalo River passes right through Jasper.

We will be bringing our camper - we bought it to use for trips like this.  In addition to being able to haul our bike and give us our own bed to sleep in - it gives us the ability to cook meals and we don't have to eat out every meal.

Dave, if I remember right, last year you got the 1st trailer spot #11/12.
If we have 4 more people coming in, we can get cabin 13/14 for a savings.
There is a queen in 13 and a queen and a twin in 14.

Lets talk!

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 07/06/21 at 18:50:46

Versy:

We were in spot 11&12 last year.....13 & 14 are cabins that are right next door.  That would be nice, as those cabins have a nice fire pit area.

The only bad part about those sites are the sewage hookup on my trailer is near the front, and I really have to straddle two trailer sites to connect to the sewer.  It was fine during the week - but on Friday they rented out space 11 and I had to hook back up and pull my trailer forward a bunch.....and then the folks that were going to take that spot broke down and never showed up.

I was going to try and reserve spot 3 or 4 - as those spots would work really well for my camper.

It appears the cost of the cabins might have gone up this year - do you remember what you paid last year?  $85 a night for a two person cabin seems a bit steep.  The cabins at Little Switzerland are about $20 cheaper each night.

I don't want to get banned to the Tall Table - but I believe recent events like Covid and inflation are causing prices to go up considerably.  The days of the $40 cabin are likely gone.

The owners of restaurants/campgrounds/cabins are all trying to recover from the madness that has occurred the last year and a half - and they have had to raise their prices to help with the recovery.  And the fact that folks are traveling and camping in the US instead of traveling abroad has put a big demand on the campgrounds.  It is not uncommon to make reservations 6-12 months ahead of time for stays in the State and National Parks.

The little cabin we had last year wasn't much to brag about .   I'd rather stay at the same place but :

So If Marcia and I get 1/2 and you and Springman get 1/2 we can get a discount ?

I haven't reserved anything yet .    Instead of getting them separately , will they give us a break $$$ if one of us just books them both ?   :-?    Are you calling them or am I   :-/ .

Not sure. I went to jury duty yesterday and apparently it was to qualify to sit on a grand jury. Those of us that qualified have to go back on Aug 2, 3 for selection. If selected I will have to serve 2 days out of the week for a 3 month period. Cannot say I am happy about it. Hopefully I will not be selected. So, you guys enjoy as for now I cannot say if I will be able to take off for a week at all this year.

Hay Versey ,

I just got off the phone with the River View Motel nice lady .    Their rooms are one queen and one full for $72. total/night , not set up to share a room though.   I ask about pictures of the rooms and she said check back in a couple of weeks that her web person is still working on it , (must be her son-in-law) .   :P

http://www.riverviewmotelandcanoe.com/your-stay.html

I'll check the others too ...
......................................................

Hay Versey ...

Would you be interested in going in on thirds on this room (two bedrooms one bath) ?    Me and Marcia either one see a problem in sharing a bathroom (I'll leave the exaust fan running if you will  ;D) , heck if you was staying at our house it wouldn't be any different.

I want this to be received in a supportive way - Jasper is a town that is not all polished up, neat, tidy and freshly painted.  The town looks old, and the only place with a manicured yard is the bank on the north side of town.

The Riverview Motel is just like every other business in town - it could use a coat of paint!

For me the appeal of the town is not shiny buildings - but the people,  The local folks are the warmest and most welcoming people of any place I have ever traveled.

And,,,,,,the roads are lightly traveled, "Steep and Crooked" as the road signs proclaim, and there is a nice mix of mountains, rivers and wildlife scenery.

And that is within walking distance to the Ozark Cafe, so I know where we're having breakfast.   ;D

Hay , I'll check on the WiFi .

We're having breakfast at Dave and Deb's !   ;)

So , if it has WiFi I'll book the two bedroom one bath model !   :)

Breakfast might require a drive , I believe the Motel is right down town. ???
......................................

UaOah

I looked and they're not braging about having WiFi ???   :-?   I called and left a message w/my phone # .

Its hard to believe anybody could get by without WiFi in todays world ??

Do ya think Lancer might be joining us then maybe we could move to the River-View ?    The Lady I chatted with there said that "Durning ELK BUGGLEING SEASON (Sept.) they normally are booked solid .
The River View says "WI-FI Available" and their rooms are all $72.oo total/night.

Marcia would rather me get the Motel downtown , but if Lancer is joining us then all would be good with moving down by the river ... but we better hurry up and get booked or we'll be left out  ?   ::)

Marcia found out the Arkansas House does have WiFi , so either place is good !
But
We should know if Lancer can join us before we commit .

Hay , Should one of us call the campground about getting #'s 13 & 14 together ?

I'm a little concerned about everything getting taken and leaving us with tent camping .   Marcia would stay home .

Versey that would just leave me and you sleeping on cots in a non airconditioned 8x10 tent ...  :-[

Well ,   I just paid 1/2 down on Kristina's Room at the Arkansas House for the 19th - 25th of Sept.  After tax and all the fees it was $739.20 for 6 nights.    It has two separate bedrooms with a large bathroom in the middle.   There is  a GREAT ROOM in the down stairs we can use and plenty of parking in the front and back.   It does have free WiFi and is located in the Downtown block.  It has a little fridge and coffee maker also.   Marcia and I looked at it last year (Great Room and Downstairs)  and my impression was "This is nice , I'll bet it's pricy ? " ...   ::)

Great MM.....now you can all walk to the Ozark Cafe' to get your milkshakes!  (They sure do make great milkshakes.....almost a meal!).

The campground is only half a mile away - so the commute back and forth will be easy.

I do believe with inflation and all the lodging and restaurants trying to recover from the Covid shutdowns.....prices are going to rise significantly.  When it is a men only event I have no problem staying in a campground and walking to the bath house - but when our lovely wives come with us they deserve a bit nicer housing.

Good morning guys   :)

I'm always debating with myself about  "Which Bike to Bring" ???  It's nice to have a choice !  :)

I've rode the Kate more than any so far this year , and figured the K-70 Dunlop would have been wore-out after the Texas Ride.   But it wore past the shallow "teeth" it had when new - down to the "meat" of tire its self and just quit wearing out !
So
I've been thinking , "Soon as I replace the tire I'll sell it !  ;)
Well
The more I ride it , the more I think I'll just keep it ?
And
That back tire just keeps on going !    I'll might put the Cont. Twin on it before our Sept ride if the K-70 is gone or not .    Nine thousand miles and still looking good .     Those wear bars are still a long way down in there !  :-?

#1 is shallower than #2 ,

Deb and I used a GPS to get here - however she keeps checking our Atlas to make sure the GPS isn't taking us someplace we don't want to go!

The weather forecast for today looks great.  The forecast shows rain coming in 1 AM Tuesday morning and lasting until after sunrise.  Likely we will have to wait for the rain to go away and the roads to dry before we head out on Tuesday.  The remainder of the week will be dry - the Thursday night low is forecast to be 46!

Yep, I sure wish I could be there but just too much going on here. Had a government inspection of the lab today which went just fine. But also been the driver for my wife as she is hobbling around due to bad knees. She had the worst one operated about 6 weeks ago and the next one will be next Tuesday. We did not realize how bad the unoperated knee was until it was forced to work extra while rehabing the operated knee. Well, hopefully she will be fine in the next few weeks.

Too bad, I would love to have all that mechanic brain power helping me with the S40.

You guys have a great time and hopefully I can join you guys in a ride next year. I am thinking I will not have the opportunity for a ride this year. But who knows?!?!

Hay , we went to PUSH MOUNTAIN today.  The road getting there is just as good or better than going up and down PUSH MOUNTAIN its-self !   We didn't get started till the temps warmed up a bit ... but we still had a nice 5 hours + of ridding some of Arkansas's finest roads.

Today we also did the most dangerous ( in my opinion ) thing of the entire trip.   We ate breakfast at the "Cliff-House" restaurant.  Yea ridding the roads is not  dangerous at all , they are in great shape.   Eating breakfast while sitting in a house 2/3 hanging off a cliff supported by wooden supports seems Really Dangerous to me.   But , we did it anyway !

More fun is planned for tomorrow!  ;)

Title: Re: Events for 2021
Post by Dave on 09/24/21 at 04:18:48

We are having so much fun riding.......it is hard to find time to log on and file a report!

The roads here are in really good shape, traffic is incredibly light as long as you ride the secondary roads and stay off the 4 lanes.....and avoid riding through Harrison which is always busy and takes a long time to navigate through.

Yesterday while coming back from Push Mountain I was leading and I started to notice a "fowl" smell.......the smell of aged chicken poo.  There was just a hint of the smell at first - but it seemed odd that the smell wasn't going away and seemed to be getting stronger.  As we continued riding and the smell was getting stronger I caught a glimpse of a truck with a large flat sided dump bed ahead of us.....and there was a faint cloud of brown dust blowing out of the bed!  At that point I realized the truck was hauling chicken poo..........and the occasional white feather on the road was a confirmation on what the cargo was. I stayed well back until we got a chance to pass and the wind seemed to be favorable to blowing the dust cloud away from the passing lane - then our group exceeded the speed limit for the first time this week!  I kept everybody out until the sun was setting - and a couple of deer crossing the road reminded us it was time to be back home and not riding after dark.

The weather this year caught us off guard a little bit, as the temperature has been far cooler than previous years.  Overnight temperatures have dropped just below 50 - however it doesn't take long to get up over 60 when the sun comes up.  Daytime temperatures have been in the middle 60's to low 70's - when the sun is setting it cools off quickly.

Today is Versy's last riding day - the rest of us will be riding again on Saturday and leaving on Sunday.

The Arkansas Ride has officially come to an end.  Versy left Saturday morning.  MM, Marcia, Deb and I are leaving this morning.

On the days we could ride all day we rode between 190 - 255 miles each day.  We often got a late start as we waited for the sun to chase the morning chill away - and we often got home just as darkness set in (one night we had to ride the last half hour in the dark).  As the sun set the air would get chilly pretty quickly.

I was completely overwhelmed by the huge number of big Harleys that we saw this year.  Perhaps it was a result of Eureka Springs having a "Bourbon,Bikes and BBQ" event - but the number of Harleys riding in groups of 3-20 was amazing.  I believe the Harleys outnumbered the other bikes by more than 20:1 - and there wasn't a Sporster to be seen anywhere (MM said he saw one).  On Saturday the number of Harleys riding the area was impressive - there wasn't a scenic overlook or parking lot or highway that didn't have a group of big Harleys and leather clad riders.  Still - there was plenty of room for everyone and riding was still excellent (there was a lot of waving to be done as we all passed by each other).

It was excellent weather (one rainy day and a bit chilly at times) - and I am already anxious to do this again next year!

Title: Re: Events for 2021

We put Versy and his "Beast" to a mileage test on one evening ride.  MM was leading us all astray, and took us to a place that was very rural without any gas stations!  Versy was able to go 143.6 miles on a Savage with the stock gas tank....and only at the very end did he have to switch to reserve. (I was tracking the mileage so there wasn't much of any speedometer error as I have stock sized tires on the BMW).  Versy will have to let us know how much fuel he put in.......we did slow the pace down a little bit at the 130 mile point knowing it was another 15 miles to the town.

The night temperatures are about 10 degrees warmer this week in Jasper.....we just hit a cold spell while we were there.  I think that is fine, as it was 95-100 the first year Deb and I went.

trip meters, you gotta love them.   ;D

143.6 mi / 2.489 g = 57.69 mpg

There musta been a whole 0.2 g left... shoulda went to the next station.   :o

That was pretty good mpg. Not sure I get that many miles per gallon.

The open exhaust just made me drive faster ?  ::)

Nothing that a hammer can't fix.

I guess 3.8 gallons would be beneficial when MM takes us on those wayward excursions where gas is rare!

Hay !

I've seen that sign !!   :)

I think it's between San Antiono and El paso TX.

The only time I rode through there I was on an old Yamaha SX650 and I had a one-gallon metal Colman Fuel tank filled with gas strapped to the back side of my sissy bar and a military duffle bag strapped to the front.

OK ,

I'll ask ...

What kind of tank holds 3.8 US gallons and fits a Savage ?

:-?

Hay  Versey

One time I had a puckered in Kawasaki 750 LTD fuel tank that need to be "UN-PUCKERED".

So , I put a thick sheet of plastic over the refueling hole and closed the lid.   Then , I put the air hose to the fuel petcock with a good clamp and turned the air compressor on .  ;)

Well ,  :-[  as the air pressure rose near 100 pounds the PUCKERED area did pop back out .
But
Next time I fill it up ... it held more ... I don't remember how much more but the next time I had the fuel tank off I saw why !
The web of the tank had puffed out a noticeable amount.   :)
......

I suspect , ???  while the tank had pressure on the inside a person could use a torch to weaken the area they wanted to expand outward .  ???

It is a shame that it takes an all day commute to get to Jasper, Arkansas from Kentucky.  The weather there has been 15-20 degrees warmer and dry most days.

This Thursday and Friday would be great fall riding days!

This Thursday and Friday we are getting into the 70 deg. ranges  :)

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I'm getting a long ride somewhere if I have to make-up a place to go !  ;)

68 deg. and sunny  8-)

There has been nice riding weather here in the Houston area but commuting is the most I have made of it. Still fun though.

I was looking at a story last night about a guy who crossed Bear Tooth in 2020 at the last of August.    He referred to snow and frozen puddles on the side of the road !     :-[

I'll keep looking for "To Go To" places ...

How about Bike week without staying in camp a lot ?   Like day rides out of camp then staying for the "Burning Bike" at the last night ?

I got 55 mpg from the Savage last time , I'm planning to fill up with 100% real gas and try it again soon as I get my chores caught up again.

I really want to get away from the areas where "Bikers" gather in large quantities.  Last year when we were in Arkansas and Eureka Springs was having the Blues, Bikes and BBQ gathering.....it sure did clog the area up with a lot of motorcycles.  I seem to prefer riding when the roads, restaurants and parking areas aren't packed with V-Twins.
