Title: Rebushing shocks
Post by Hiko on 01/08/21 at 13:41:48

There seems to be a reasonable number of options for rear shocks available
but few with eyes as large as our 14mm
Any advice on how to go about rebushing these welcome

The shock posts are 14mm OD. There are shocks out there with the correct ID.
I bought a pair from 'Bikers Choice' (crap!) with larger ID that I had to shim down with thin wall tubing. You can't 'shim up' !
cheers! 8-)

All the ones that seem to be available around here are usually 10 or 12 mm
in the eyes   I guess they could be changed to our 14 mm but I am not sure how to go about it and info on this seems to be scarce

Dime City Cycles have some.

cheers! 8-)
ps: 12"-12.5" shocks will sharpen the steering!
pps: give them a call!

Usually, when I want something to have a larger hole I use a drill.

riding on paper-thin shock mounts might add a type of excitement you might not enjoy, but what do I know, you might enjoy living on the edge ! ;D

If you search on eBay you can get lots of different sizes of shock bushings.....with or without the rubber.

Thanks to all who replied
I think I was guilty of overthinking this
Apparently shocks have a standard bore of 23mm and it is just a matter of pushing in the right size bushes.
I have ordered some 14mm from ebay now
They  will take 5-6 weeks to get to our little backwater in the south pacific.
This forum is awesome!

To get the stock bushings out or the new ones in - I use appropriate sized sockets on each side of the shock and a bench vice.

Dave I have just read this above and thats exactly what I did!
My new shocks  290mm White make with 10 mm eyes arrived today and I just couldnt wait a month or so for the new bushes to arrive from ebay so I removed the old ones from the s40 shocks and fitted them to the White ones using your method above and some silicone grease.
The bike is about 25mm higher in the rear  I like the look and feels softer which is what I wanted.
Unfortunately it is blowing a gale and raining outside and dark so it will have to wait  for a trial
In the beginning I had visions of the bushes being bonded in some how  but the change over was relatively easy
Many thanks to all for the advice

Got to test out the new shocks today
Much improved comfort level
I used  Whites shock absorbers SA0029014  290mm
$100 well spent

What is the difference between a bushing with an OD of 20 mm and an ID OF 10 mm  and a bushing with an OD OF 20 mm and an ID of 14 mm?

The 10mm  ID one has an insert 10mm ID  and 15mm OD
The  14 mm ID one has an insert 14mm ID  and !9mm OD
[nominal dimensions]
