While you were grunting, I was busy making a compression spring.

The old spring was bent and did not spring, that didn't seem right to me.

A new spring was $ 0.45 but there was a minimum order of $ 25,- :o

I suddenly realized that I still had stainless steel wire of 0.48mm thick.

Nice work, but I really think the ratcheting pawl is what kills the chains.
Better to put a rod thru the main spring to limit the amount of travel the tensioner has.
Think about it-when the motor cools, the cylinder shrinks, and the chain becomes slack. Then the tensioner extends to take up the slack. When the motor heats up again and grows, the chain becomes too tight and starts to stretch.

You got a point there.
In my opinion that would also explain that the baring surfaces of the camshaft wear out quickly. Because the chain is very tight.

But I don,t get, what you mean by putting a rod true the main spring?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.
What I did was to take piece of round step rod (1/4"? 6mm?) and place it inside the tensioner spring. I cut the rod to a length that would allow the tensioner to move back a little as the engine warms up and the cylinder grows, and the chain gets tighter.
But, the tensioner cannot move back much and allow the chain to flop back and forth.
I'm doing trial and error to see how much slack I need to allow.

What does work is to apply a spring action to 1 of the attachment points. You can realize this by means of a vibration damper-like fixation. If you know what I mean.
