Title: 48 state USA motocamping trip - on a 96 Savage!!!
Post by Kiwicruisette on 08/14/20 at 09:51:33

Hi team!

I've been a long time lurker in this forum - this is my first post.

I bought a sunshine yellow '96 Suzuki Savage as my daily commuter when I lived in San Francisco, then in May I lost my job due to Covid lay offs. It took me a while to get over that, but then I decided this was an opportunity to see the rest of America! I packed up my Savage and hit the road - i've been motorcycle camping for the last 2 months. I'm 8000 miles in, 8 states deep and have until winter to visit the other 40 in the mainland. I'm keeping off the beaten track, camping in national forests, and abiding by all local health guidelines (social distancing, mask, gloves when pumping gas etc). Its been an absolutely incredible experience so far, and I'm so glad I get to do it on my trusty Suzuki Savage. She is a beast!!! But I get a LOT of comments from people who think I'm crazy doing it on a 650 single cylinder lol.

If you're interested in reading more about my story, an article was published yesterday about my trip:
https://www.advpulse.com/adv-rides/rider-loses-job-to-covid-so-she-set-off-on-solo-adventure-across-us/

So the link, for me, in the original post did not direct me to her specific story.  This link for some reason does:

I usually ask when someone is taking a savage on long-hauls how much oil they are burning.  Seems like my 95 used a lot more than anticipated when it went on some highway tests.

Wow ,   Your doing something I never had the time to get done !   8-)

The Savage is more than capable , don't let anybody tell ya other wise.

Send pictures so ... us unfortunate left-out-few can enjoy the adventure with ya.

My first LS650 was a 96 Sun-Shine Yellow !

If your in Arkansas next month some of us are going to be in the NW part.

If ya going to TN then you've got a back-yard ( or spare room) , shower , and a meal for a day  - in trade for some neat stories (remember , there not true if there's no pictures  ;))

My wife will enjoy the pictures too !  :)

Nothing but admiration! Take care sweetheart. ( at my age I think I can call you sweetheart)

If you are ever in El Paso we have a meal and a room any time. My wife loves to cook and entertain.

I'm a pretty good mechanic also.

Nikki ,

If you find yourself in " NEED " again , there is a group of Bikers called the Christian Motorcycle Association CMAUSA you should know about.

Put this number in your phone just in case.
We have a national "Hot-Line" phone number.  :  870-389-6196 CMAUSA Hot-line

Some times it's slow but we try as best we can.
Its works like this :
During business hours
You call the National number to get HELP
National Office calls State Office
State Office calls Local Chapter
Local Chapter Calls Local Member who comes to pick you up and HELP  :)
Everybody is not home  or at the phone all the time but we do as best we can and are glad to help .

Thanks for sharing an updated link! (not sure why that didn't work first time round) :-/

Ah yes she does burn through the oil, glad im not going crazy! I did have a little oil leak, but that didnt explain quite how much I seemed to be going through!

Nikki

I did some checking ... that number is durning business  hour when some one is in the office ( still could be a "Life-Saver" ) .    Looks like I'm looking for plan "B" for after hours  ???  ::)

For US$49 per year, she could join the AMA (https://americanmotorcyclist.com/) and get roadside assistance. The standard plan gets you unlimited tows for bikes and 3 per year for 4 wheeled conveyances. In the 10 years I've had it, I've used it more for my cars/trucks than my bikes.

Awesome to see you taking advantage of the opportunity. I am envious and guaranteed I would do the same if I were laid off and single (married...but my wife might still want me to go  ;D ;D ;D).

Stay safe out there.  I see on your rough map that you may come up from FL through Alabama and through Auburn/Opelika, which is where I am located. I have reasonably good mechanical experience with these bikes and other toys and have a fairly well equipped shop. If you need a check-up or an oil change along the way plan a stop and we'll take care of anything that the bikes needs.

I am not always on here, so if you are approaching AL and wanted to plan a stop PM me here as I'll get a ping on my phone with your message.

Or, post your itinerary and let our members ring in with a local contact number if you are going to be close to them.

You are a Savager and we can take care of our own ......

If you are passing through the area close to Cincinnati - you could get Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana all within a few miles drive.

I live just south of Cincinnati in Kentucky, and if you need any bike service we could easily do it here before you move on.

You can trust me.......my wife will make sure of it! ;)

So far 12,000 miles - I'm expecting to do another 25,000 or so! What the highest in the hall of fame? Is it calculated per trip?

The Hall of Fame is based on total mileage on the bike. Youzguyz in San Antonio just recently hit 200,000 on one of his savages. For entry into the Hall of Fame you need 25,000 miles. Sounds like you will be there shortly. Good luck to you.

Wow!! 200,000 I'm impressed! Mine has 44,000 on the clock in total. I'll see what I'm at at the end of the trip before I enter :p

Kiwi Cruisette, you may even get in the Hall of Fame for the Longest trip so far, if you have done 12000 miles on your trip so far. Moderators please check.

Started watching your YouTube channel...so jealous...you go girl!
I've been wondering if I should ride my bike to see my brothers new house in Missouri...now, I'm inspired.
I'm on the verge of retiring soon and was thinking I'd ride my bicycle across the country on the TransAmerica Bike trail...some 4000+ miles
Before I get too old anyway.
Thanks for the inspiration!

BTW, Kiwicruiser...have you done the Verslavy modification?
With 44k on the bike I would think so but just something to ponder...

Does anyone know if she was able to complete the trip?

She did. First half of this interview is about other places she's been. She talks about the USA trip about 28 minutes in.

Looks like her bike  developed the head plug leak and she took it to a shop that charged her a lot of money to misdiagnose it and not fix it. But she finished the trip anyway. Too bad she didn't ask for help on here.

She's very active on Instagram @kiwicruisette: https://www.instagram.com/kiwicruisette/

She was interviewed on this podcast (haven't listen to it):
