Title: 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100
Post by springman on 08/12/20 at 18:45:11

I need some input from you guys. I have found an 01 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100 with just under 15k miles. It had been sitting up for 2 years so owner had is gone over by a bike shop where they took care of (refurbished) the fuel system. He indicated the bike is running beautifully and as he sounds like a more seasoned individual (like most of us) I tend to take him at his word. Cosmetically it is not perfect, it is good, maybe even very good.  Both tires have tread but the front one is probably over 6 years old (I would get it changed right away). The asking price is $1950.00. The only real issue is that it is located north of Ft. Worth which means a 4 hour drive for me and then probably a 5 to 6 hour ride back (I do not have a pick up or trailer). I told the owner I would check with him on Friday night to see if he still has it and if he does I would drive up there. What do you guys think?

That's GREAT !

That not too far .   Are you going to drive it home ?

I tell my buddy Charles , "I'll buy ya lunch" and he's ready to go anywhere !   ;D

Hay ,  can't you promise your wife dinner and a motorcycle ride to get a ride ?

That looks like  a really fine "WE" bike !   The 1100 has a lot of praise in its history and they last forever ! .   That bike just looks comfortable !  :)

One of my CMAUSA buddies had one with 60,000 + miles on it while I had the 883 .   It would just walk-off from the Harley any time he wanted it to.

If you like it buy it, but possibly get it checked out before you do.

Looks nice. I know nothing about these, but nice.

Rent or borrow a truck? I bet you can get a rental for less than $100.

Price is good , looks good , ride it BEFORE you buy it. I won’t buy a bike unless it fits and feels right , why own a bike if your not comfortable on it.
Good Luck !

It does look comfy, and Honda has a great reputation for building quality motorcycles.  And the price is awfully attractive.

Traveling a long distance to buy a motorcycle seems to be a standard thing for me. I do haul them home on a trailer attached to my car or truck.  That Spirit 1100 is not a motorcycle I would want to try and load in the back of a pickup truck!

Just ride it home.  It's a Honda, what could possibly go wrong????

(Is exactly what I would have said 30 years ago.  lol)

Title: Re: 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100
Post by springman on 08/13/20 at 20:37:34

If I get it I will ride it home. I am looking to see what to do in the area for an afternoon and evening and just spend the night in the area instead of making it a 10 to 12 hour ordeal. Well, I should know tomorrow night if I am getting it.

It was a 13 hour round trip yesterday.

Those southern Ky. back-roads are as  good as the NC. back-roads !

I went through the Boone National Forest area yesterday ,   Dave mentioned ridding there last year but I had 5 trips to Texas and Az. last year ...  Maybe next year ????  :-?

That Honda 1100 REALLY LOOKS GOOD !  8-)

I'll get some pictures when I get the Kawasaki (Triumph) cleaned up .  Its been sitting for a while in a barn.  420#

Looks really nice MM. Congratulations.

Now you guys wish me luck. I looks like I have struck a deal for a 97 Shadow Spirit 1100. This is probably the first time I ever buy anything without having physically inspected it. It is in the Austin area.

I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

Sorry MM, I just got back about an hour ago. The bike was in the Austin area near lake Travis about 4 hours from me but luckily only about 1 hour from my daughter's house. I picked up the bike on Saturday and rode it to my daughter's house in 107 F weather. Thank goodness it was cooler today, I rode home in 104 F weather. So just got out of the shower a bit ago. I think the bike is a beauty and handles great on the highway and on the sweepers. I did not encounter any hardcore twisties so have yet to see how it will handle there. And I got about 48 mpg.

I have to brag a bit. I stopped for dinner about 80 or so miles from hope to take care of hunger and to let the day cool of a bit. And it did cool off, it was 98F when I got home.

Anyway, while I was inside the restaurant 4 young bikers came in and they all parked next to me. They had a Honda 500 rebel, a ratted out 883, a crotch rocket, and I forget what the other one was but it was a similar class bike as the first 2. When I was outside getting ready to mount up I could see them all looking out the window. It was sort of cool that my bike was the biggest and really clean looking classic. I knew they were watching so I got a good grin when I goosed it a bit and the vance hines muffles put out a pretty loud roar. Hey, what can I say. I got I kick out of all that. ;D

Dude !  That is one GOOD LOOKING BIKE !!!   :) :) :)

It looks really low seating too !   Yours looks a lot cleaner than mine does !

I'd think the Savage might be your mountain bike but the 1100 sure looks like the open road machine to have !

Being how Marcia is going to Arkansas too , I'll be riding the Guzzi 750 .   Ridding double its like the Savage in the power department.   Dave will have the "HOT ROD" if he brings that 1200 of his.  Or you will since he's ridding double !

I'm glad this is billed as a "Pleasure Cruise"  I get the door knock on the helmet if things start getting wild !    ...  ;D    And fair-enough so !
..................................

clean looking classic. 8-)     Congratulations

Thanks MM. Other than the pipes and the windscreen it is all original and in beautiful shape. And it was just recently gone over completely and has new tires and brake pads and shoes. It cruised with no problem at 75 mph in 104F temperature so she sure seems to be in good shape. And yep, this is the one I'll be bringing to Arkansas. See ya soon!

Nice Ride!!!! I didn't realize that the first photo was apparently stock. That bike looks super nice and I am sure you are going to like that one...and it doesn't have rust all over it that you have to clean off like that ebay bike  :-?

The Shadow is in great shape. I just gassed up the S40 and it actually felt weird to be on it now. I felt small and paper light. No wonder you can do thing on the S40 that you can't on the bigger bikes. ;)

Nice looking bike Springman......it looks like your shopping and patience was well rewarded.

Is Steve bringing his big Harley to help support the V-Twin lineup?

I will probably bring the F800......it rides just fine and hauls both of us well.  I have not tried to load or haul the R1200 in the camper yet - maybe next year.

Yep, Steve is bringing his Harley. But he said he is loading up on the pick up. I guess I'm the only one riding in.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think is a a beautiful bike and sort of glad it was far from home and I rode it home. This way I already feel comfortable on it. Not as comfortable as on the S40, but still comfortable considering the extra weight and power of the bike. The more I ride it though, the more I like it.

That yellow and black combo looks like my Savage originally did when it was younger.

Getting used to a new bike is interesting. Yesterday the bike died on me on the highway. I figured I had run low on fuel but when I reached down for the petcock I could not find it like I can on the S40. So I ran the fuel system dry and it took a few minutes before I could get it started after I switched it to reserve. And apparently, the Honda has a fuel pump that pushes the gas up into the carbs which is something I did not know. Apparently there are more differences than just having 2 jugs. ;D

Looks like I have a whole bunch of learning to do! :o

Springman ,

It seems that MM's day isn't complete until he drags you and your shiny bike down a dirt road......or through a water crossing!
::)

your shiny bike down a dirt road.

Not that Dirt Roads aren't FUN , But ...

Actually I was thinking of CLEAN WATER , but I'm glad it mostly went North instead of West !
I'm sure the folks of east Texas are even more glad than I am ?    :)

It seem that entire area gets more than its share of Flooding , storms and such !

It looks like this storm is going north enough not to rain on my east Tn. plans for the weekend too !

Title: Re: 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100
Post by springman on 08/27/20 at 08:56:20

No MM, I'm trying to keep the Honda clean.

We were lucky that we were spared. I feel bad for the people in west Louisiana. Laura was a monster storm.

Stew, I hope you and your family did ok with this storm. Please let us know you are ok.

Not sure who else is in the area that got hit. Our prayers are with all of you.

I did not pick up on the hurricane humor......I thought MM was referring to the low water crossings (creeks) that are a part of the ritual that Youzguys has for his Texas rides.

Lookin at the radar and projections this very early AM,, I figured we were gonna get a load of rain and some tree bendin wind..
Nothin in the rain gauge to see,, it has done some drizzlin,, and gusts in the 20ish MPH range.. Cloouds are headed in a swirling southwesterly direction,
I think we are about done with it,, and I was wantin some rain,,

Title: Re: 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100
Post by springman on 08/27/20 at 10:22:41

I have to admit that the low water crossing sounds a bit more intimidating on the heavier bike. I've already thought it through though and decided that the hill country rides are probably more enjoyable on the S40.

Title: Re: 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100
Post by springman on 08/27/20 at 10:24:56

JOG, I have to admit it was very surprising that we, here in Houston, were barely touched by this storm. We had a bit of rain yesterday afternoon and that was it. I'm not complaining. I am very thankful.

Considering all the fun and excitement that part of Texas has seen in the last coupla years,, Id be gigglin at dodgin a bullet. From ships leakin stuff in the ship channel, fires, explosions, and hurricanes,, Id say Enuff already.. Time for a break..

Post by MMRanch on 08/27/20 at 10:47:39

I'm glad the storm missed Houston and didn't get your yard and possibly bike under water !  ::)

It really looked bad for a while.   Don't they usually slow down their tracking once they hit land ?   So this one staying in HIGH GEAR and heading North might have been the best thing that could have happened .  :)    Its like a show of mercy in the mist of the storm that could have been a lot worse !.  Matt. 5:45 .

Some times I wonder if the news media just spins the drama up just to make headlines. ???  :-?   We may never know the full extent of the shenanigans' that really go on !
