That video was pretty standard stuff. When I went to my first Stay Upright course in the mid 80's, Warwick Schuberg who was a police training rider and knew a lot of racers said that most expert riders thought that they could out brake ABS because they had the skill to hold the tyres at their limit of traction. Turns out when they actually tested against ABS they were woefully underbraking. Seems to still be true 30 years later, and ABS would be a lot better now.

I watch bike riders ride way too close to the back of cars while waiting to overtake, all the time. It's common sense that not only is giving the car in front a lot of space much more safe but it's also more relaxing which makes it safer still.

On the freeway, some jerk driver will jump into the gap I leave but I just drop back again, it doesn't make any difference, plus it's more fun to get back in front of them in another lane by clever timing which you can do on a bike because of the extra visibility plus it's good practice to anticipate what's going on.

I think it may have been the GStwin forum but someone there had a bit of a moan about how a "moron" car driver was doing a u turn over double yellow lines on a long straight stretch of road. They didn't see them because there was a car between them and the turning driver. They hit the car in front of them who had to brake suddenly.

Point is they were blaming the u turn driver. Sure he shouldn't have been doing that but the bottom line is that if you hit the car in front of you then you were driving too frickin fast. End of story. Anyway they got outraged at this suggestion, because... u turn over double yellow lines. Ferchrissakes. What part of 'going too fast' don't people understand.

'Going too fast' is always based on the conditions, not the raw speed. They make the point in the video that the more experience riders were more at fault but they put the car driver at fault.

@JoG, regarding your recent get off where someone turned badly in front of you, I didn't answer you last post because I didn't want to get into an argument, and I have no idea of the actual conditions, but I'm always suspicious of that type of situation.

I got T boned by a nurse who drove straight out of a hospital driveway and broke my tib/fib about 25 years ago. No question it was her negligent driving, but I had to think long and hard about that and I came to the conclusion that I could have allowed for the very fcuked up manoeuvre she did and got away with it. You've got to be honest with yourself.

These days I have people pull out in front of me or turn in front of me regularly but I'm alway expecting it and always ready for it, so while I'm a shouting and a cussin' a lot, I'm also at a safe distance and speed.
